I´ll try to explain. The only version that allows you to change to an hacked firmware, is the version 1.50.
When you buy a psp in the store it will most certain come with a version higher than 1.50, so you´ll have to do a downgrade to version 1.50.
Once you´re in version 1.50 you can then upgrade to an hacked firmware. The latest is 3.40 OE-A.
The important thing is with what version we´ll your psp come, cuz each version as a different downgrader.
There is a downgrader available up to version 3.03.

well i bought a psp from tesco, it was a ta-082 running 2.71 fw. i followed the instructions on http://forums.qj.net/f-guides-hacks-homebrew-and-emulators-43/t-guide-the-ultimate-downgrader-guide-all-downgradable-firmware-90919.html using the ta-082 2.71 downgrader. everything went fine with hen & 1.5 enabler & the 1.5 update appeared to work fine until reboot then.......aaaargh.....it was bricked
now i have got a replacement from tesco which is another ta-082 2.71
any suggestions to stop me bricking another? should i use same method again or maybe upgrade 2.80 and use N00bz! 2.80 ta-082 downgrader? or something else....
any help would be great

You should definitely upgrade to 2.80 and then use noobz downgrader.
I downgraded two ta-082 psp´s using it. It works without a problem

Things to do before flashing:
1) reset to default settings
2) battery charged over 80%
3) use a clean memory card (I have 2 cards- 1 just for updating, other one with everything on it)
Ive been updating successfully since 1.52. Now running 3.40OE. Ive been using mainly the ez installers. Some say they can brick psp - but I havent had any issue. Im not familiarwith a ta-082 board. Maybe stay away from getting one with that.

With noobz downgrader you just add a step to the procedure if you have a ta-082. Before you flash you run 2.80 idstorage changer.
