Nope, you just have to race same 2 tracks, while you are in the blue rank. Race against higher opponents and next level is opened up with more (and challenging) tracks. Just got to Hotel level (yellow) and there's a nice 90 degrees turns track that's quite hard, but fun to slide around. Green level brought 3 new track (first 2 are not raced anymore) and hotel has atleast same 3 more, if not 4, don't know yet.
You have to change to more powerfull car soon and when you win the pink slips (you bet all your upgrades) you end up with a basic car that can be slower than the previous one. So it's not all bad that you can't advance too fast. The crown button shows opponent ranks, so you'll know who's challenge to acceps depending on your car status.
Now in the start I wasn't sure if the damage is only little scrapes in paint, had to get a faster car, tougher track and more careless driving to notice not. They do affect driving as well, little damage testing screenies:

I have the game and my gamepad configures and works prefect (logitech rumblepad 2)
Maybe you should update/reinstall latest gamepad drivers and see if that helps

im using xbcd for my 360 pad, and its not detected in config screen.

I'm still torturing myself with this. It's becoming almost unbearable, but the power of Christ compels me to finish it. I'm ranked 4th and I have pink slips to all but one car.
I'm finding it very difficult at this point.
Was anybody sadistic enough to actually finish it?

Oh and there should be car limit online, when you make a game, like: stock, level I, II , III and WideBody. It's just silly that you can't change your car to something similar that others have. Usually it's a few stock cars, couple tuned ones and few all out pimped. Even races are out of question 
WideBody cars also replace the prevoius upgrades you had, so you can't downgrade them, so it's almost drive stock or them  Others just have to beat the game too, to make online more competative.
