Yeah, so like topic title says ... planning a trip mostly to Ireland but with a bit of England. Booking through a travel agent, so we need to make decisions and pay for shit now. Oh, and leaving in mid-September, it's what my gf wants to do for her birthday Smile

Anyways, since a bunch of you bastards are from around this area, I thought I'd ask the good stuff to do and see. So far the plan is to fly into London, stay a few days at a friend's flat, then take the train/ferry to Dublin, stay in Dublin for 4-5 days (maybe do a road trip somewhere while we're here), then go to Belfast for a few days, then leave .. possibly not having to go back to London for a flight. We were only going to do 10 days, but now it looks like we will do 2 weeks, and maybe go into Scotland as well.

So what do I need to make sure to see and do in all these places Smile Touristy stuff is OK, as long as the lines are not too long and not a rip-off. Is there anywhere else in England worth going besides London that's not too far off from the ferry to Ireland (I guess along the train route)? Is driving around the coast of Ireland worth doing? Is Scotland worth going to if we only have 10-14 days? you know, etc. etc .. everything I need to know Razz

oh, and no suggestions to go elsewhere. obviously I don't plan to see all of Europe in one trip Wink

Go see the the White Horse ... Avebury Stone Circle .. stone henge is way over tourist-ised .. rent a car ..Ringwood brewery is the best in the south of the country ..

In Ireland I suggest you get over to Galway .. Slaterys bus service will do you a buss from London or Birmingham for under a hundred quid .. listen to some sessions in the Pubs & stay in cheaper accommodation like hostels .. you can rend a bicycle in galway town & tour the Burren, Connemara to your hearts content .. plus a trip out to the Aran Islands .. well worth a look & the Cliffs of Moher are worth a day trip ..

if you want to do Northern Ireland .. don't miss the Giant's Causeway ..

wb chinup, nice to see you're still around Wink

those places seem like they're not on the official route, except we would go to galway if we did the road trip around the island Smile

ok going by that map you can still do most of what I mentioned except Galway & thats sucks .. Galway is outstanding .. get out into the country of Wales on your way back out of Ireland if you can put aside like five days for Wales .. its unlike any other part of the British isles .. wales is proper knomesville .. mushrooms & fairies all the way Wink

well really, Ireland is supposed to be the focus of the trip, so we'll be there the most ... I'm sure we won't stay in Dublin for a week ... but I guess really the only way to see most of everything is just to rent a car and drive all around the island ...

Drive due west out of Dublin .. stay out of the inland .. backward is an understatement .. go across to Galway & travel the coast lines .. just fantastic .. older than stones & people you don't want to leave .. proper decent .. I remember hitching around there & feeling like I wasn't friendly enough .. more than enough within an hours drive of Galway to fill your boots good ..

sounds interesting. it's easy to put a trip together just stringing along the cities on a map, it's harder to make sure you actually see it how you're supposed to Razz

rule number one never eat @ the hotel or hostel .. always make excuses to go explore .. eating is a good excuse Razz .. the more lost you get the closer you will get to seeing a place from a locals point of view .. Wink

how many days do you think it would take to drive from Dublin, go around the coast and then either return to Dublin?

Stick to the road, stay off the moors.

And if you do go to continental Europe, dress like this guy:

Dublin kicks ass.. Its my favourite place in the world..

London is fucking horrid, its a horribly over crowded un-english place. If you want to see the real England you should travel to York, Durham, Oxford or if you like the city... Leeds. Personally I think York is the nicest places in England, it kicks ass, plus there are more pubs than people Razz!

this is more true of Ireland than England

take you a min of three days .. the coast roads are way squirrelly Laughing .. realistically give yourself @ least seven so you can take your time & sleep over in hostels, inns & pubs along the route ..

yeah, Dublin is definitely going to be the focus of the trip for sure. Really the only reason we are going to London is to visit a friend who's been living out of the country for 3 years now Smile

London is ok, you just have to go to the right places. I've got a few friends who live there and i've enjoyed all the time i've spent there. Although my experience was different to what the usual tourist would get considering I spent it with friends.

Still, theres alot of history in the place, you just have to experience it for yourself. I know alot of english people who hate London for some reason, but I guess it must be similar for those who live in the larger cities in America too.

I really dont like London, i find it claustrophobic and unfamiliar. There's no sense of community for the English people, all the other minorities have a huge sense of community and we just suck at it.
