Well it seems they timed it to coincide with the Halo beta release to get the biggest effect. |
I would have thought the biggest effect would have been not letting the users play the backup copys (offline detection)
Why wait for halo 3?

Think the question will be answered when Forza comes around. If they want to stop offline backups that would be the logical point.
Still, there isn't one flashed 360 that hasn't more than made it's £150 value back, so If I have to go back to buying games fair enough.

Hmm, Makes you think why Forza had that little delay? Edit: But how can they do that? the detection code is in the kernel not the game code.
Infact as far as I know the games can't access the kernel, Only usermode if I remember correctly, So unless they can detect backup copys in usermode (I doubt it)
Also, about the original games read this...
Quote: | It's not the Halo 3 Beta - that's just a coincidence.
I have MS28 flashed with 5.3a, before the Spring Update.
Since then I have only played original games. No backups at all.
Banned. |

I have 2 360's. One I never connected to live.
The other I'm not sure if I am banned, because I don't connect much to live.
Can I use the same hd for both without problems?
not that I care that much... as long as I can play games offline i'm ok, but i'm curious...

Sorry to hear peeps here are having a tough time, but reading all the kids crying in the other forums, I honestly love it. |
i couldn't give a fuck about not having live - i'm sure i'll manage having to play every single decent game backup offline while you spend out buying em all just to be able to play online hahaha
as another poster said, online play or ALL GAMES FREE? i know what i choose, so fuck u m$ hehehe |
Yeah it's going to be funny when they integrate the detection system into the latest games. Remember, some games require you to update the dash before play, so it's not very far fetched.
Owned warez child! |
you're the only one that's owned, dickhead - owned by m$...hope you enjoy continuing to hand over all that cash to play a few games, maybe you'll have a stack of discs half as high as mine sometime.
you fucking pricks, boasting how glad you are you have 'legit' consoles - more likely you just didnt have the nous or balls to get your firmwares flashed in the 1st place
go play with all the other cunts online, in your 'walled garden' lol

Why on Earth would you BUY a 360 and NEVER play ONLINE with it? Thats like buying a PC and not getting internet service. I dont even want to know that logic of thinking. |
Some people prefer single player games over playing against 12 year old shitheads. |
And some of us choose to use the friends-list function.
I was sceptical about online on consoles until this generation, but now i can´t live without it. Gears of war in the right company is still a blast.
Wouldnt mind it being free though.

Give it some time sputnik. Of course your current copies are working fine, just wait till they integrate the detection method into the updates that come with new games, they could easily prevent you from playing copies this way. |
for somebody who has 8000+ posts of mostly warez related stuff, you dont make much sense condemning piracy, or have u been feeling inadequate lately??? |
The majority of my posts arn't even related to Piracy at all, I discuss the games themselves, not how to aquire them.
Warez isn't really that important to me, i'll take advantage of free software when I can but I don't really mind buying games if they're worth it.

Tbh I don't give a f*ck ^^ I'll enjoy the free games while my Xbox can run them in SP and if that ceases so what, then I guess I'll just buy a core or I'll have to wait until one of those nifty hackers finds a new way, eventhough I heard some methods to find out if the game is copied can't be disabled for hitachi drives, I guess the samsung ones will go up in prices hehe. I wanted to buy some games I've anticipated anyway the problem is you can'T update them without the patches, now imagine you get another game like buglivion :/

if that was the case then the banned would not be able to play offline , the ban is just a live ban so it wouldnt affect the offline playerseven with a update
just my 2 pence |
Thats not my point. What this whole situation proves is that microsoft has some way to detect modified 360's, if they integrate that into games they may be able to prevent people from playing copies.
This is a potential future development of what we are currently seeing, I know that at the moment the bans only apply to live, but thats because currently thats the only way they can detect modified 360's. |
Or it could be a testrun. Sort of like a beta-ban, to see if everything works as they expected and if its what they were aiming at they can later ban them all.

Hi all heres my story lately with my box..
Before the banning began...
I have the ms25 or 28 not sure with the 5.2 whatever letter that comes after that.
I have done the spring update...worked great...without any backup disk inside..
Played a recent downloaded game offline with the cable unplugued...no problem whatsoever...
After the banning began...
I logued in back online without a backup in the drive...no problems and not ban yet...
Downloaded the complete demo of Forza 2...no problems and not ban yet...
So my theory on it is that as long as you dont put in a backup in while connected with the ethernet wire...there shouldn't be any problems...
If you want some content on live...leave your tray empty and see if it still works...as for demos, once its downloaded I will always unplug my ethernet cable before trying it so Im sure no information what so ever goes to microsoft on what Im doing while im on live...even if its for demos downloaded or media like trailers and other...
So at the end I beilieve that as long as you play your backups without beeing connected (and thats by having the cable unplugued, not just plugued in and not signed in...then you should be fine...
I know I am as up to now...
Maybe that they can indeed check the fw versions while beeing connected on live but I believe you have to have a disk inside in order for them to get the info...why ? because I put off the auto-run disk whenever I switch my box on so the game dosint start right off away...kinda of annoying anyways...but I payed attention and even with the auto-run off, as soon as you turn on your box the disk spins a bit so maybe and just maybe thats when they can catch your fw version and only that way...cause when theres no disk inside the dvd does nothing when you turn it on...
Well thats just my opinion and recent experience..as up to now I am still on live and havint been ban yet...
Maybe thats the solution...who knows...
I dont mind having to buy a game for online play...I agree on that...and still buy games I wonna play online..got HL2...CSS and BF2142 originals so I can play online...So dosint really botter me..
Thanks for reading..

Still no word on how detection is made ?
Looks like it has something to do with the pre-release crackdown that was floating about , I downloaded the pal release and flashed with 5.3b before spring update and Seem to be ok for the moment . been playing pes and pgr online tonight

its not crackdown. people without crackdown are still banned. also, ensuring you have NO disk in the drive is also unnessicary. I've had my legit copy of gow in the drive for days now and it's fine. It might be that they can detect copied disks - i dont know...
