Then you will be forced to stay AMD and your choice of CPU will be determined by your budget and what allow your board.

You can compare them here btw:

id say depends on what you want it for... raw horsepower or multitasking and using programs that are (or will be in future releases) multithreaded, as ive decided to go quad core instead of going with a meaty single or dual core cpu.

I've got a lot of money, but I don't want to spend it on nothing. My other parts of the computer are:
GeForce 7900 GS, 2 GB ram on Vista. Not sure of course, but got the feeling that upgrading my CPU would give me the biggest performance boost?

True, but I doubt you would get a "huge" increase. Think the best way to do it is to buy a new system. Meaning a new motherboard, Ram, Cpu and maybe a Psu.

Hardware: Ryzen 3700x, B450 MSI Gaming Pro carbon AC, GTX1080, 32 GB 3200 Mhz cas 14, 256 EVO SSD, 1 TB EVO SSD and 4 TB HDD.
Console: xbox, wii and xbox 360

Why new ram? Confused shouldn't 2gb be enough?

If you want to keep your board then they will be no need to upgrade your ram, however if you go Intel with a socket 775 board or toward AMD socket AM2 CPUs then DD2 ram will be required.

IMHO if you don't care about money you should go intel with a socket 775 motherboard, an obvious e6600 -or more- CPU and the relevant 2Gb of ddr2 ram sticks. Then update your gfx card if you need it or for the upcoming directx10 games if you play.

BTW new intel Penryn CPUs are coming near the end of 2007 with a supposed 45% increase in performance over the current generation CPUs, which is already great. Always stupid to wait for more but at least you are informed.

With a socket 939 board you will have a hard time trying to find a CPU in a shop these days. I also recently upgraded my CPU to a Opteron 180 Dual Core which is almost as high as one can go now with socket 939 but I had to find it on Ebay. Socket 939 is basically dead now but that does NOT mean it is not good. In fact I have heard arguments that they are better than AM2 which I have also heard are on their way out (!). I would say your logical upgrade path with socket 939 would be to go dual with chips like the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800 or Opteron 165, 170, 180 dual.

939 won't be in the grave till theres games it can't run. I've got an x2 4400 that hasn't been shamed yet. Only thing that's holding my system back is the 7900GS KO.
