AMD's R600 is almost at the finish line and the cards powered by it, will be available a month from today under the name of Radeon HD 2900XT. This high-end offer will be a 9.5" card bearing the 80nm R600 chip, will have 512MB of RAM (GDDR3) and it will arrive at a suggested price of 'only' $399/€399. At that price, we'll get a card that will beat the current king, Nvidia's GeForce 8800GTX in pretty much every synthetic benchmark and game, and will pressure Nvidia to bring down the price for its top dog(g) card. The drivers are still in the works but AMD will have WHQL Vista and XP drivers at launch.

May 17th I think is the release date
That would be our national day.

ATI officially confirmed

ATI said in front of 150+ journalists that R600XT won't be able to compete with Geforce 8800 GTX. The dream is dead and Radeon HD 2900 XT won't be able to catch up with a six month old Geforce 8800 GTX.

ATI said that R600XT, Radeon HD 2900XT is about the performance of 8800 GTS. Radeon HD 2900 XTX won't be launched at mid may and will be delayed to Q3 2007. We already wrote about this here.

The dream that AMD can do something and return as the high end market leader s gone. R600 rails against G80. Congratulations on Nvidia.

Interesting but there seems to be some doubt to those results based on info on other sites, I'll wait for more information and other tests/benchmarks before judging the card.

I didn't want to turn this into a AMD/ATI vs Nvidia war (Nvidia fanboy)
For me its all about the price and Nvidia 8800GTX at ($550.00) is to high for me
At that price you can get an Xbox and Gears of War Shocked
I hope the price war drives the prices way down where they should be
Just make the price reasonable and I'll go with the flow

Wow, I didn't expect such disappointing benchmarks from the R600! That sucks!

I was hoping for a low-power 8800 equivalent, but this should spur ATI forward to revise its next round of cards. This round looks dead.

I have an x1950 pro and for 160 bucks it kicks ass! I would buy an 8800xt if the price falls below 300. Only competition can make that happen, so get off your ass ATI!

They have had some problems with the r600 chipset since last year, but I didn't think it was performance related.

The 320MB 8800 GTS would be agreat buy.
I live in the UK and seen it for inder £200. It can be overclocked enough to score the same as a 8800 GTX, just with less memory (so would slow down at higher resolutions) Wink

This couldn't be true, for a simple reason:

I always make the worst hardware choices, and I went with an 8800GTX.

Halo 2 vs Halo 3

Very Happy

French site, whose comments I'll roughly translate.

Thanks to the Multimedia 2.0 internet, everyone can get his 15 minutes of glory. Even the most stupids. Today, it's gameplanet's autor's turn, who put side to side shitty screenshot from halo 2, taken from his grandmother's 36cm cathodic TV, and screenshots from the shacky-cam-low-res-internal-pré-alpha-leaked-footage of Halo 3 :

[bunch of shitty screenshots]

Those few pictures have got a point : they let us realise, withouth any shade of doubt, that there is no point in filming an HD game with you phone's camera.

... and that halo 3 might disapoint a lot of people, let's not lie either.

comments on the screenshots :
This texture is blurry : unbearable.
This shadowis not lined up properly : photoshoped ?
Isn't it obvious ?

From a nvidia fanboy
If I see 1 more comparision useing Doom as Nvidia's we fucking beat everything all the time now and forever I'll scream
Doom is old & tired and always runs better on Nvidia cards anyway everybody knows this
Lets just wait and see. The only thing I want is a cheaper 8800GTX

i love my gtxs. i dont think the R600 is going to be good enough considering it came 7 months late, it should be a lot better, not just able to compete with G80. but then again current gfx card architectures have almost peaked, both ATI and Nvidia need a new design. but yeah hoping R600 is better than G80, so prices go down and also forces the production of an even better card. also ATI will grab a large share of the mid-range market, but I only care about high-end. still crossfire is meant to be VERY good with R600, but we will have to wait and see I guess.
bring it on........... Very Happy

back OT: hope this isnt unoptimised crap like Halo on PC, which did get better with patches iirc but was very unoptimised engine.

Well according to ATI it wont beat the GTX meaning the prices will stay the same at least half a year... Thanks ATI!

I have an xbox and never bothered to play Halo 2 after being seriously disappointed in Halo, playing an FPS with a gamepad blows bigtime.

And now that I can finally play it the way it was meant to be, I'm not interested anymore.
It came out 2,5 years ago on the xbox, there are far better games by now.

1st Review??

86%

Pros:
- Fantastic integration of Games for Windows – LIVE system
- Easiest multiplayer system of any PC title to date
- Tray and Play is revolutionary and simple
- Powerful editor included for free
- VOIP system is as simple as it is on the 360
- Achievements!
- Dedicated servers already in place, as well as the ability to host your own
- Keyboard/Mouse and 360 controller support
- Low system requirements

Cons:
- Mixed bag of high resolution and low resolution textures with no DX10 support
- Is activation as finicky as Windows Activation? Will I need to re-do it after changing hardware?
- Vista only means lower adoption rate
- Pay-to-Play multiplayer only - no LAN, no Local, No Internet
- Full price for a 2.5 year old title

Well, for *some* people it has the opposite effect. What's the point in upgrading to Vista just to play a piece of shit game that looks like crap? Laughing
