ok guys need some advice...i am more than adept with all things pc inc networking but have never owned a router...
shortly i have a netgear WGR614UK arriving for my cable/home network (i will be using it as a wired router not going to use wireless at the moment)
my isp is virgin media (telewest) on a 10mb connection using a motorola surfboard sb5100 modem)
my home network includes...
toshiba satellite a10pro running xpsp2 with zonealarm internet security 7.0.377.0
home built am2 x2 4200 @ 2500 / asus m2npv-vm m/b with nvidia 430 chipset / 1gb dc ram / gf7300gt running dual boot - xpmce 2005 sp2 with nod32 & nvidia firewall / vista ultimate with kaspersky internet security
xbox 1 modded with xbmc etc etc
xbox 360 unmodded on xboxlive
do i need / want software (and nvidia hardware) firewall in addition to hardware firewall on the router? i know more than one software firewall is a no no, is software+hardware firewall a good or bad idea?
also is there anything i need to know concerning hardware or xboxes with this router?
May i precise that the WRT54G is great only with its linux OS and open source firmware, i.e. only the WRT54G version 4 or below and the WRT54GL.
WRT54G version 5 or newer use the VxWorks proprietary OS and firmware thus AFAIR you can't use the open source firmwares which made the success of earlier versions, between others thing like half the ram for the OS compared to earlier version.
If you choose the WRT54G have a careful look at which version (take v.4), or take a WRT54GL.
