it was confirmed on one of the hl2 forums that u can turn steam offline when u play HL2 SP mode. Steam is required to be online for activation. After then u can turn steam off and play it. so in short u have to have steam running, but it doesnt have to be online

its not going to be delayed because of the lawsuit. There has been a statement from Doug Lumbardi that they still expect HL2 to be released before Thanksgiving (and before Halo2). I think it was on gamespot but Im not sure.
This was sprung as a rumor when the mag that claimed to have a review and screenshots had to cancel the screenshots by request from valve. People mistook the translation as a delay till March2005 somehow

In court filings, Sierra/VUG says that the current distribution of Half-Life 2 via Steam exceeds the scope of the current software publishing agreement between the two parties. It is apparently seeking the court's assistance in compelling Valve not to use Steam as an avenue of distribution.
Potentially it could be delayed, at least with regards to the steam release.

Quote: | Also valve says sierra never gave them a dime to help make HL2, valve paid for everything, if thats true then sierra/VUG doesnt have much of a case to argue here. |
While Sierra may have contributed nothing to dev costs, they almost certainly paid for marketing etc. And merely having a large advertising budget is enough to bump a review up 5-10%.
Quote: | what would happen if sierra would just say fuck this and did not publish hl2? |
Then Valve will be able to sue them for loss of earnings and breach of contract, and will regain all publishing rights.

Not if valve is found guilty of breach of contract before that, which is possible considering what they did with regards to steam. But I can't see sierra wanting to pass up such a lucrative deal.

If the game kicks ass, all is forgiven.
