4:3 FTL! If you gonna buy a screen at this day and age, pfft, ofcourse you go with widescreen. Why the hell would you want a 4:3 screen?

Exactly what Syn said, but widescreen is becoming more and more supported in games.
Cheaper certainly, and it just works better with the OS in general.
Of course I have a 37" Widescreen and wouldn't trade it for the world.

Once you have tried a real widescreen monitor, you will never go back to that squashed POS 4:3/5:4 resolution.

You need to move forward from the stoneage (read: non-ws)
Just cause you can't afford a proper widescreen, doesn't mean it sucks

Another questions :
1. Those 50.000 h of run time are 5-6 years of error free run time ? or 50.000 and puff my Lcd will die ?
2. How long your lcd lasted before it got broke ?
3. Is 5ms enough for playing fast video games and watching movies .
Asking simple questions because this technology is new to me .

5 ms will be fine for gaming and movies as long as you arent sitting REALLY close and REALLY trying to see if theres any ghosting...
the only issue as far as im concerned in regards to lcd's, is be mindful of their native resolution, and make sure your pc is powerful enough to run at it, otherwise things are going to look like arse for instance if you get a 1920x1200 res lcd, unless you can run the game at that resolution without any noticable fps drops, it wont look great... some say they dont notice the quality drop, but i sure as hell do and it really dents my gaming enjoyment.
yet another reason u cant beat crt's for gaming i guess.

More screen space? WS has much more space to work with. Cheaper? Not really... They have the same prices from the stores I've seen.
Compatability is the only factor I might agree with, but most games can be hacked to support widescreen and all new ones (that are not from EA ) have native support.

Seems my maths was wrong, WS does have about 300px more space. Still, 4:3 are cheaper, they certainly were when I bought my new screens less than a year ago.
Personally I think its down to taste too, I wouldn't want a widescreen sitting on my desk, simple as that. I like to dual monitor, WS's would take up more room with very little benefit (300px? assuming I have non 1600x1200 19"). I would buy a widescreen for a dedicated media machine, or if I had the cash to splash out on something over 22".
BTW, I'm still waiting to see a constructive argument FOR widescreens, this "stuck in the stone age" crap is just idiotic.

What do you mean constructiove? You haven't given one for 4:3... I guess it comes indeed to the personal choice, I just can't see why anyone would prefer 4:3.

I have, it is a fact that more games support 4:3, and this is even more true with older games, that is constructive advice. Everything else in this thread is subjective to the amount of money your willing to spend on buying a monitor, mixed with personal choice. Although my point was mainly aimed at those people ONLY saying "blah blah blah.. stone age.. blah blah blah.."..

OK, another constructive advice: Movies and games feel more natural on widescreen then they do on 4:3. That's why the cinemas have presented movies in that format since forever. I have no idea why home televisions were made 4:3 to begin with.

Totally agree on that point, as I stated above about a dedicated media machine. How does that convey to a desktop application though? I couldn't see much benefit from using MS word on a WS monitor.

Well, in Word you have much more space now... You can open 2 documents at once and compare then, for example. You could do that on 2 monitors, but go play a movie or a game on those dual monitors...
Look, no point in arguing. I won't convince you and you won't convince me.

So if my husband that loves old abadonware games will play them on a Lcd with the resolution 640*480 the the image will be ? what ? I want to see it or hear some opinions about it , and not "BLABLHABLHA JAKIDI SMAKIDI buy a WIDESCREEN" or a bigger inch LCD , I am not interested in them allready picked a model and before I buy it for my husbands birthday and for our computer I would like to hear answerers only to the question up there and the ones down there still buzz in my mind
Code: | 1. Those 50.000 h of run time are 5-6 years of error free run time ? or 50.000 and puff my Lcd will die ?
2. How long your lcd lasted before it got broke ? |

damonika12, what does you husband prefer? If he watches movies and tv series and likes to emersed in them... Now, I think there are options in the graphic cards driver panels that can make the screen resize the 4:3 image while preserving AR, so he'll have an OK picture with black bars on the sides.

Those 50.000 h of run time are 5-6 years of error free run time ? or 50.000 and puff my Lcd will die ? How long your lcd lasted before it got broke ?
Are this to difficult questions to answer !

Every screen has a specific resolution to which is designed to run. If you run the screen at a different resolution to this then it will be blury. You could always run the applications/games in windowed mode.
As for runtime, well, its a matter of how you treat it, what you plug it into etc.. there are too many variables to give a straight answer. If you look after it, it will run for a number of years without many/any issues.
