Is anyone else missing roleplaying games like the goldbox series by SSI? Champions of Krynn, Pool of Radiance, Pools of Darkness? Or the Ultima series until part 7 (lets forget anything that was released after Serpent Isle...). Or Betrayal at Krondor! All those games where you still had a PARTY and TURN BASED combat plus a lot of text to read, which was creating a nice intense P&P-like atmosphere.
Why do they make all RPGs like first person shooters these days? Pool of Radiance with modern GFX or even 3D, but still turn based would be such a winner. I enjoyed Oblivion or Morrowind, but its nothing to the immersion a Pool of Radiance created back then. With all the possibilities today you could revive SSI's series and create a bunch of great old-school RPGs.
Ah well, gonna install the gooldbox series again, lets see if it runs under DOSbox

I'm going trough quite a few older RPG games thanks to the DosBox .7 CVS builds, currently playing Ultima from the beginning and will continiue with Might and Magic afterwards followed by Wizardry, quite a few games to go trough but they can be quite fun despite their age.

Temple of Elemental Evil was the last game that really Felt like an oldschool RPG like you described. And sadly, that was rushed out the door by A(ss)tari. Actually it is them I blame alot for the decline of these types of games. Ever since they got the AD&D liscence it seems that they have butchered all games with anything to do with it. With the except of NWN, but then again, that is the new flavor of rpg-trying to force a bland and uninteresting story in your face and not really letting you explore and finely develop yer chars and get your ass whooped and so on.
Yeah, RPGs just arent the same these days, sadly. Everyone is focusing on making big huge flashy games and forgetting about the simple things that made the early ones so great.

I would kill for a modern graphics/physics version of Wasteland or Fallout, as long as it was still turn-based and isometric. Whatever happened to The Fall: Last Days of Gaia? The website hasn't had an update since late 2005.

The Co8 mod fixes almost all the remaining issues with the game, but it can't fix the basic problem that the engine was only designed to support 10 levels max. It's still a great game though, and the closest approximation to the 3.5E rules we'll probably ever see.

Circle of Eight yes. Its a good mod. Restores the deleted content, fixes up a few lingering bugs, and what not. Much better game.
They're currently working on recreated Keep on the borderland.

It seems it will never see an english translation. Its to late now, the game is to old.
I played it with english text and german vocies. It was kinda fun. STALKER is a good comparison. But in STALKER the enemys had some AI, they dont in LDoG, sadly :/
This is the next great RPG, that will be in the same class as Fallout etc!

I remember having played all the "good graphic" games from SSI when i found a budget version of "Demon's Winter" (pobably no one knows that). It had butt ugly graphics but i got so hooked to the game, i played it to the end. Or "Tunnels & Trolls: Crusaders of Khazan" which had worse graphics than MS Excel. Still i loved it.
And i remember "Spelljammer", phert. Such a great game! Sadly i had a cheapo soundcard (Aztech) and in the tactical combat sequences the game crashed...
Dungeon master i loved because it had the first visual attractive dungeon graphics, but i feel like it was the beginning of the end (along with Eye of the Beholder). Graphics was becoming more important than the gameplay, fighting was click-galore and text a minimum. The next step was cutting the party away and there we are today.
Hey, there was also "Martian Dreams". This game is still in my head, the story was very deep and impressive. Very fresh scenario.
Oh, and the manuals. RPGs had still manuals that were handbooks, not just a leaflet, folded in the middle. I used to read though them before i played the game, the thicker it was the better.

The game was released a long time ago (i think 2005). It has never found a publisher outside europe i guess. It wasnt a success though.

Hm, maybe I'll give that a try too if I can still find it anywhere. My German is a bit rusty but I got by ok in Gothic 2 - NotR before it was available in English.
Definitely looks interesting.
I've been following Laid Back Gaming's progress on their first project, Dropship, too. There's still not a whole lot of public info about it yet unfortunately, but turn-based sci-fi RPG made by people formerly with Troika is enough to get my attention.

Demon's winter rocked, terrible graphics but excellent gameplay. Other great rpg's are Questron, Galderons Domain, Black Crypt, Legend Of Blackthorn, Keef The Thief, Battletech, Legend Of Faergheil etc etc
shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

No. I had high hopes. Even made some wallpapers for it (posted them to the forums long ago). Its a shame they couldn't get it together and get a publisher.
German voices aren't so bad though if there is english text. Anyone got instructions for enabling english text?

I'm not sure why, but the person who made the English mod removed all the German voiceovers instead of just subtitling them with English. It's better than nothing, but I would've preferred the voices were left alone.
Haven't gotten around to installing it yet, but if the animations are the only thing worth mentioning for why it's not good, then I'm feeling pretty optimistic.

Don't know where you got that info from, but the mod I have has all the dialogues translated and all the german voices are present.
I actually like the game, only problem I have with the game are the invisible walls when you are driving(avoid going too close to people and walls). |
Well the link above says, "Replaces all text files with English text, spoken text is removed." I checked the german.py files in the archive and every entry has audiofile="" so I assumed that there is indeed no voices. I'll check for certain when I get time to install it tonight or tomorrow.
If the voices are gone, do you still have the one you used that did the translation without removing them?
