How they heck do you end patrols? I keep circling the "binoculars" on the map to complete my "patrol" and it never says "completed". ?
THAT!...I would also like to know. I guess its not just at the "MARK=Binoculars" but you have to patrol that general area...but beats me, haven't figured out how to "complete" the patrol either.

identify the target first (you have to identify the ship class correctly) in your recognition manual and tick the box . Then you can put the speed etc in .
Found that at another forum, maybe worth a try...no time at the mo off to work.

The voices of the crewmembers suck hard, no emotions at all in it.
Sounds are fucked up in general, but I hope they're going to fix that.
In my opinion they should drop the World War 2 and move on to.. say.. a war during the Cold War period? Or why not modern times?
Nothing beats the feeling when you correctly coordinate a torpedo to hit the hull of an enemy ship with 100% precision.
Realistic mode for the win.

Assumption, indeed, 1/4 of my hits usually miss, never really understood the concept of the chronometer.
Ah
It's supposed to work like it does in SH3. There you calculated the speed by keeping the target locked and followed it for 10 seconds and the TDC then calculated the speed using the initiate bearing, the AOB and the range.
For me, the game is broken totally until that function is available. Using the automatic TDC feels like using auto-aim in a FPS.
And guesstimating the speed is total shit as well. Oh well, just another reason to let this game mature with patches i guess.
Oh and not to brag or whatever, but in SH3 which i played for numerous hundreds of hours, my torpedos probably had a 90% hitrate. Sure some duds but i very rarely totally over or undershot a target.
And the satisfaction from making perfect calculations quickly and under pressure is a large part of what i love about this game. So without it functioning properly, well, as i said before. Gamebreaking
man anyone else has this problem that the crew keeps on talking "numbers".
like every second someone sais "one" or "three" or some other number. it`s really scaring the shit out of me (they really say it, the mouth even moves) and they don`t stop!! only solution is to turn off voices but that's not really a solution, is it?
then some of my crewmembers eyes grow big (a strange form of high sea scurvy maybe?) or some don`t have eyes at all.
now is that a bad crack or does this game need a few patches, i don`t know. i hope that the few "bugs" get ironed out tho, because i really like the rest of the game
I found out how it works.
You have to patrol around the area you were given in the briefing. You dont have to be in the binoc area all the time.
It takes a few days before you get it completed, then you should see the binocular icon get greyish.
Then you got to sail back home to port.
It's basically rushed. I'm glad I didn't buy it (yet).
SH3 was rushed, yes, but there is no excuse to rush a game like SH4 which is not only based on SH3 but benefits 100% from the amazing engine that already existed.
Such a shame.
It still has the piece of shit BANG you're dead ending as well. What an atmosphere killer - and one of the big complaints about SH3 that SHOULD have been rectified.
The whole UI is so fucking crazy as well, it looks better, but it's not. It's a real impediment to your enjoyment of the game.
I'm not a sub sim buff, but I decided to give this a go after having enjoyed battlestations midway.
First of all, I was absolutely stoked once I saw the Yamato upon firing up the game. I knew in my heart that you'd actually get to go toe to toe with the thing (correct me if i'm wrong).
The graphics are amazing IMO. Perhaps i'm easily pleased, but the rolling seas to the sun rising at 5.30am-ish, was enough to sell it for me.
Blowing holes in a ship was very rewarding, even more rewarding was seeing it snap in two, then following the hulk down to the sea floor. It even landed with a nice *thud* sound. I then raised the camera out of the water, then back in again.
I'll tell you what though, with the explosion detail and damage in general..... this is what I was praying for, when I fired up Battlestations Midway. I'm so disappointed that Silent Hunter 4 couldn't have come from the minds of the BSM crew.
It took a damn long time to get the hang of the controls and interface (to be honest, i'm still pretty far off but at least i'm enjoying it), but once you get a basic grip.... you're off sinking ships.
I haven't played SH3, so this is my first outing..... and just staring at the ships in the museum, ate up almost an hour. Panning the camera around, under water, out of the water to watch the water fade off the camera, listening the water crashing against the bow then swinging it around to gradually hear the engine noise.
I guess i'm lucky not having played the others, but for now.... I really, really like this game.
you could calculate everything completely manually on paper and then enter them into the attack computer and hit fire
all that need to work then are the knobs on it
I must say after the first impressed patrols I'm getting annoyed slowly. SH4 clearly is a step backwards.
1.) The visuals -> The engine offers more eyecandy (like algea in water, sun braking though water, visual damage, filters) but seems very unoptimized. All runs smooth as butter but once a tropedo hits and rips a hole in a ship the fps take a dive. Looks like that damage effect (holes etc) cuts my framerate in half! And it does not even look that nice. And the damage does not apear where the hit occurs, my torp hit a carrier aft and the hole suddenly appeared midships - not very realistic. Besides the visuals are extremely jaggie no matter what res. Even running at the native res of my LCD the game looks jagged and blurry, much more than SH3 at a lower res. The ui looks sharp, but the world around looks like upscaled from 800x600 or something. JAGGIES! And no way to get AA.
2.) Controls and Interactivity -> In SH3 you could directly interact with your crewman. In SH4 you can click em but you cannot interact. That greatly takes away from the feel of really commanding them. The two layer control sceme at the bottom is also something that needs a lot of getting used to. And the mouse sensitivity is pretty low ingame to make it worse.
3.) Buggy -> SH4 seems to be a rushed buggy mess atm. A lot of thing don't work well. Also AI ships seems to behave buggy like cruisers stopping instantly (but bow and aft waves still there).
4.) Theatre -> The pacific is not my thing but that is a matter of personal taste.
5.) Difficulty -> SH4 seems dumned down. Playing at the same level as I'm used to from SH3 I managed to sink two carriers, a battleship and several freighters already. And I never came under a lot of pressure from enemy ships. The ai managed to sink me once when I surfaced and tried a cannon to cannon battle with a jap battleship. They hit me once ripping a whole in my hull sending me to the ground in no time. But enemy sub hunters never got me. In SH3+GWX it is insanely hard to evade a single one, here you can just ignore a whole bunch because they are just too stupid. They sink themselves actually. Two cruisers collided when they tried to hunt me down and one sank.
SH4 seems totally unfinishes and unpolished atm. I'm moving back to SH3+GWX for the moment and keep SH4 for the time when a few patches and mods actually turn it into an enjoyable game.
can someone tell me why 50% of the time, I have a 3d crew, and the remainder is just paper versions of themselves?
the 3d crew option is ticked..... why am I getting 2D?
I was dissapointed when i was on the bridge and saw one of the crewmembers turning around with his binoculars and he turns into a flat 2D object. strange...
This gamespot gameplay video of SH4, clearly shows ship control. The dials at the bottom right are clearly related to the ship, and it has less options in the bottom left.
WTF!! LOL!!
my conclusion is that the patch is fucked!! i played last night fine... but thought i would try the patch just. After applying the patch... i get odd graphics, weird behaviour and eventually after a short while the game crashed.
I had the big eyes, then the men started going fat n thin..stretching..then spinning around lol!!
The spinning thing at front of sub on the deck..that spins, gets to a certain point and then jumps back and repeats. And the guy inside the sub he started to turn anti clockwise and looked liek spiderman on the wall lol!!
So i think i will go back to the mount way and try that
Intel Core2 Quad Q8300
Asus P5N-E SLI
Asus ENGTX 480
4GB 6400
can u turn that "water on the camera" thing off.. its really annoying
Agree, I think the Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 water effect would have been cooler
You can edit the effect by going into your CFG folder I believe - I've not tinkered with it but there's about three settings relating to the effect which might help.
Please!!
I don't know how to get rid of the blurry vision! no matter what resolution i use, it's all blurred!
everything except the interface. Is it something to do with the crack??
