Well, actually the AI blew me away totally, dethroning FEAR. I already wrote about the mobs hiding in a trailer and shooting from it's windows (not scripted - I reloaded the save game 2 times and they acted diffrently). Other imprssive moments:

Two patrols of 3-4 soldiers walk along the side of the road. I shoot one of 'em to get their attention and hide immediately. They do exactly what would be military tactics in real life - they spread (!) in a long line and start sweeping the territory moving towards my shooting position.

It's hard to kill off a group with a grenade just like that. They react very quickly and run away/hide. Threat analysis and retreat algorythms are awesome too. I think there's also an element of panic implemented. Shoot a mob or two violently in front of their friends and they retreat at once.

Well, I could go on and on about this )

P.S. Does anyone know where to buy weapons, AP rounds and especially scopes?

I'm surprised by how poorly this game runs. At 1680x1050 with everything on full I was getting about 20 - 25 FPS on the very first area that you start off in when you speak to wolf. I turned off the grass shadows which suck anyway and now get 25 - 50FPS. Mostly at the bottom end of that scale though. My specs are

AMD 64 5400+ X2
2 x 1GB Kingston DDR2 667
MSI 8800 GTS 640MB

I would think that I could run it better than what I can. It's still playable though but it's not exactly great. I might add though that I think that this game looks pretty good. The trees and foliage are really nice.

Wierd...I got a similar system, a bit better, but not much, and it runs fine, except for major lag when loading the area. HD is obviously the bottleneck here. Might be a problem with loading, try defragging.

@Parallax - don't be a child. If you don't agree with me I really don't care. I know the best, and I'm sure you think you know the best, and it's same with anyone else

EDIT: @S.S.S
I actually tought Deus Ex at one point when I played it, but again, this game would be so much more fun with some skills to upgrade.
HDD bottleneck? Hmm, I don't think so. I should have added that my HDD is a 150GB 10000RPM Raptor and this is a fresh install. Benchmark tests show that on this drive my read/write speeds are 100MB/s +. Rolling Eyes

It's probably your HDD. Try defragging it Razz

Fun game and Im not sure what "bad" graphics some of you are talking about, might be time for a new PC Wink. One thing that does feck me right off is the damage model. Did these clowns even ever fire any guns? You consistently have to pump between 1/3 and 1/2 of a mag into the AI to get them down. It seriously detracts from what is an otherwise enjoyable game.

1. The ballistics are different from other games. So when you think that you pump a whole 1/3 mag you only hit 'em with a few bullets.

2. most of the guys in the beginning (soldiers) have armor so either get AP rounds or aim for the head

From my own experience: switching to single-shot mode and hitting neck/head is the best solution. And after a few hours I can now easily pick a guy off a distant watchtower with 1-2 shots using the sights (RMB) Laughing

Fine, I am a retard. I leeched the Vitality version, move the crack over... Nothing.

If I run without mounting or yasu, then I have no disc inserted. With mounting/yasu, "go screw yerself leecher" and no go.

Help much appreciated

the only downside is its a bit buggy in performance, and I think its to do with the graphics driver of vista.........

Yes the only real gripe I have with this game is the inability to understand the average russian banter the npc's have.

my only current drama with the game, is when a big text box pops up and disappears before you've read half of it (i read quick, but i scan the information so i don't miss anything), and the saving bug I had before which has resulted me in going back about an hours worth of play to my old save.

Will be nice to try it out. I've never been the one waiting for the game but I've listened to all the hype about it. What really sucks with the game though is that the devs promised coop and then scrapped the whole thing, coop would have been so nice...

Can probably be modded in, wonder what would happen if you used the server commands to change the map to the singleplayer levels.
(I'd try it if I knew the map names but I can't open the archives yet)

Nah, it's more-less well optimized I'd say, it's the dynamic lightning on every freaking object, including walls and all the other tiny crap.

Dual Raptors in RAID cannot handle the strain Vanguard: SoH puts to them when entering towns, I would not be suprised it's same with STALKER.

Hello everyone, new poster here.

Just tried this out for about an hour, and have mixed feelings so far (though it's not enough playtime to judge anything). Maybe someone will take some pleasure in reading it.

It runs great on my semiold system. AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor, 1024 RAM and an overclocked Raden X800GTO card. I've only tried it at 1024x768 resolution, and I was able to get fine performance with all the sliders near the top (except haven't tried raising AF and AA to much). Just had to turn on static lighting, and it runs really well. I'm not sure how people can complain about the graphics. I would gladly trade the shinyness of most new games for innovative settings/atmosphere such as STALKERs.
The design of the game is just gorgeous, beautiful in a gritty kind of way.

The only real firefight I've been in so far is the first mission you get, and I think the AI seems well-done. Granted, I'm way behind on FPS shooters, I haven't really played one since... oh, Battlefield 1942 came out I think. I saw a video prior to the release where one guy ran around pretty much like Rambo and killed a lot of people pretty effortlessly. I tried this approach out on normal difficulty on the first mission, and thank god it didn't work. They blew my head off pretty quickly.

Also watched a few dogs and mutated pigs have a battle. It's pretty nicely done. I would hear a lot of yelping, and 2 dogs ran past me, followed by a pig. I didn't stay to watch what happened, but I saw one of the dogs run into an anomaly that killed him. Looked pretty neat.

Bad things so far:
Dialogue. The Trader is pretty amusing to listen to, but a lot of the other stuff is really awfully written, and completely uninspiring.
Quests. Obviously to early to tell, but so far they seem to be of the 'Go to that location, retrieve the thing/kill the creatures there, and return for reward'.
Some AI quirks. In the camp, two Stalkers tried to sit in the same spot and would continue to get up, and sit down, get up, sit down, get up, sit down... Luckily they had solved it when I came back later. Also, one the first mission, one of the Stalkers that help you out got stuck on some thing outside the buildings (think it was a vehicle).

The best part so far is how atmospheric the Zone is, very well done.

I also got a bit scared on how hot my video card was getting. Again, I hear many people supposedly have 80+ degrees Celcius when they play a lot of games, but I've never experienced it before. Not even when running Oblivion.

As for anyone thinking of trying it out, just keep in mind that this is definetely not an RPG. I don't know what it says on the official website, but I know in recent interviews, the devs have stated several times that it's a FPS game with some RPG elements in it. It could be compared to a lighter version of Oblivion (which incidentally I feel is not at all as RPGish as some people say).

Cool game, and thanks for the release.

I agree with BrokenCrow but i do consider the aspekts you say Vodka. But sometimes it just takes a few shots to many to feel realistic. It also seems like if you shoot someone at a distans (i dont have any scope yet) the enemy get into an "im hit animation", if you fire while they are doing this it feels like 75% of the bullits are going throu. This dont happen when upclose, but on longer ranges say... 70m~+ shots. My aim is not that bad, been playing FPS online for many years Wink So i know when something is fishy.

Btw i ask again:
1) Has the first merchant disaperd for anyone? He has for me :/
2) Is there any way to team up with other individual STALKERS?
