The idle NPC chat (in russian) is great too - stalkers telling jokes, rumors, bitching and yapping at each other. Nice little touch. |
Wish i could understand some of it.

This game is really gonna destroy parts of my computer if i would continue on playing; it's heating up my whole system. Not only rising temperatures up to over 20 degrees C of my graphics card within 15 minutes of playing but also my cpu and motherboard temperatures, actually alll parts of my comp i think. Didn't see any artifacts tho ( and i'm getting descent framerates ) but i'm not gonna try to get them, so i'll leave this one for now.
specs: nforce 680i sli, intel core 2 duo e6600, xfx 7900 gt xxx and 2 gigabyte of ram ( 500 mhz )

wow i have the same prob!!first time i run the game bang! artifacts after 20m of playing. looks like is a bug, because some users already told the same, but is not rising that high here! wow 20ºC??? thats too much, whats your grahpics card temp and cpu temp when playing stalker ???
my 8800 card rised up like 5ºC (64 to 69-70ºC) , my cpu 6ºC,(35 to 41ºC), motherboard rised 2ºC, hdd 2ºC, well thats not too much, i think i can run this game without any problems with this temps..i have friends with higher temps ohh and perfomance sucks in this game, but the game is really great besides this big bugs..

Nothing wrong with that temp, if anything your idle is a bit high. My 7800 gt idles at 40c, but after 5 minutes of Armed Assault its in the high 70s, nothing to worry about. (they are factory rated to 115c)
TotalBloody, I use Everest, I can have the temps of my cpu and gpu, and my ram and cpu usage, displaying on my G15 LCD, or you can have it do a log to file while youre playing the game if no G15.

I hope so, i destroyed a 6800 gt before which was factory rated over 100 degrees C, but when the temps came over 80 C i got problems ( not artifacts ), ( freezing and restarts ). and a couple of months later my card died. I had warranty that's why i have this card right now and i'm afraid the same thing will happen again. This card is placed in another computer.

Um you guys are all over over over reacting about your temperatures, every single one of those is well within operating temp. The guy with the 8800 hitting 70C - congratulations as many other peoples break 85C.

Ok guys, lets take the temp talk to technical! We all want it solved, but this thread is for game play!
Now.. onto game play. GOD DAMNIT! I need some help?
Spoiler: | I got to the bunker just after garbage, and found that I couldn't get to the lab due to radiation (nor could I get any information about the dude I'm meant to be killing, the guy just kept telling me it was no time for talking (and eventually he got killed while I was trying to do something else lol).. Do I need to get the protective suit from the first game area? I didn't bother doing that mission and now it seems like I HAVE to.. I don't like how the story is forced .. I want multiple solutions dammit.. now I have to walk all the way back! Stupid lack of cars and fast travel! |

its games like this that make me happyier with my 360. dont wanna wait another 6 -12 months to have rig that runs it great. Just imagine the average joe with his store bought pc that sees this game and buys it. This is why PC game sales are in decline fuck piracy its becasue you have to basically reconfigure everything to get it to run right

Athlon 64 X2 4200+ @2.6ghz
Evga 7800GT CO
2GB Ram
Vista
90FPS, all sliders to the right, just gotta take off dynamic lighting.
I'm getting more and more impressed with the game itself. I don't understand how people can say its shit. If you hadn't heard of it before today, and just played it, you'd think it was a good game. Put aside the hype.

Yeah as long as you turn off dynamic lighting. I hope that gets patched, it's bullshit that people with supercomputers get shit FPS, especially when it doesn't even look that good compared to some games.

no it doesnt, a page back you were posting about artifacts on your graphics card and that no other game does it. Other people are reporting performaance issues. I'm running a pretty decent rig and performace for me is "ok" not stellar. Fortunatly i didnt spend alot of money on this pc for gaming more for running protools mpowered and cakewalk sonar, amongst other audio apps, but i do have a good gfx card 7900GTX cpu is X6800 i have 4gb of memory in here i spent all my tax return money on this baby so only thing id have to upgrade in next 12 months is the gfx card when crysis comes out (and when both nvidia and atimds offerings are out and comparable)

Mini-review then
I've only played for about 4-5 hours so that's what i'll base the review on.
This game totally delivers on what for me are the important parts: atmosphere, gameplay and immersion.
The atmosphere: Awesome, the whole soviet backdrop works very well for the story. Gritty, everyone-for-himself and kick the ones who are lying for your own benefit.
The gameplay: Nice, a big world to explore, a bunch of different weapons to try out, enemies with from what i've encountered challenging AI and Fallout-like itemization.
The immersion: You really feel left out to your own skills. Dont expect to go on a bullet-spraying killing-spree, you need to do at least some planning and recon before you rush into a new situation. The horror-aspect also adds alot and there are alot of things that makes you feel uneasy and afraid cause you have no idea what's about to happen.
That was the good stuff, here's the bad then.
The graphics are dated about two years or so. True next-gen graphics could have pushed this game up towards the really great games. Bugs here and there, will hopefully get fixed in a patch sooner or later though. Nothing gamebreaking however. The game is as we all know rushed, so some features are undoubtebly missing. However if they would have postponed it even more then the rantings over dated graphics and so on would be even greater. I think this was the right time to release this game, it may have flaws but they can be overlooked easily because you have so much fun to do ingame.
So basically, what people need to do is put all the hype out of their mindset. Don't think about the fact that you've seen screenshots of this game over the course of several years. Think of it as a game like any other and you will soon realise that it has tons of potential.
I give it 4 mini-review-saltshakers out of 5 mini-review-saltshakers possible.

just a word of warning. Don't save when crouched in a tunnel (or crouched in general, i'm not sure)
I quicksaved in a tunnel (anamolies) and was in a small pipe crouched down and heading to the end, then died and reloaded.
I appeared standing in the tunnel I was crouched in, so i'm half in the tunnel and half sticking out the top. Can't walk out, can't crouch..... can't do much of anything.
And I agree on the AI. It's very impressive. I like that they don't just turn around whenever you're near. They have to hear or see you. Good touch. Sometimes i find their movements a bit erratic, but on the whole it's got pretty damn good AI.
I particularly liked when I was sneaking up on the military and the leader basically called out 'stop hiding stalker, I know you're there. Come here so I can search you'.
Small touch, but nice.
Oh, and just incase anyone has a similar system
Athlon64 3500@ 2.2ghz
2gig Dual Channel DDR
256 meg Geforce 7800 GTX
1280x1024 maximum detail (i turn of AA as I don't see the point at that res on a 19")
definitely higher than 30 frames at all time. perfectly playable and looks great.

I have aslo played 4-5 hours now, and my impressions are the following.
On the good side:
Atmosphere: It really feels like you are walking around in some "haunted" zone, it feels very realistic. The atmosphere also increas when you realise that the world around you changes. Some places change owners while your away etc.
I have a great example of how your actions have an impact on the game. Once i attacked a military squad outside their base. I took their gear and went to my near by base. After i had been there for some time, talking to ppl and selling stuff, the military base sent a counter attack So then a big battle begun with something like 15 STALKERS vs 10 soldiers. Very cool indeed.
AI: This is one of the best AI i have seen in a long time, if not the best. The enemys move smart from cover to cover and tries to flank you. But still its not to good, you can still sneak around them and suprise them ect. This is where i like the game most, you can get into some very fun fire fights where you have to think and not just run and gun. I play on the hardest setting so i dont know how it is on the others but on veteran(?) it is hard, and thats the way it should be.
Team Battles: Very fun to fight alongside some fellow STALKERS, good move.
The not so good:
The graphics: I think some ppl might find it pretty ugly for todays standards, and lets face it, it is. But i really dont care. I think its nice and gfx is far from everything in a game.
Map: I felt a bit disapointed when i realised that you cant go every where on the map. Many areas is sealed of by fences and sutch. This was a bit of a letdownl as i expected something like Oblivion. But im only in the second sector so im not sure how big this limitation is.
I want to play some more befor i put any grade on it tho.
Btw, is there any way to "team up" with other individual stalkers? That is something i miss in this game atm.
Aslo, the merchant in the first base have disaperd for me... Have this happent to any one of you? He disaperd after the soldiers did the counter attack i mentioned earlier.

I would hardly call this good AI.
I've repeatedly killed soldiers by shooting out from behind a tree, then waiting for them to run up to it where they stand endlessly trying to shoot through it. Run around the other side of tree and they just stand there as you shotgun them to death. They are trivial to snipe (with just the silenced pistol) off the bridge too. I've cleared that first bandit camp a few times now too, and each time there were a couple guys who fought for a while but then just seemed to forget I was 20' away from them and let me pick them off without firing another shot back.
It's not especially gamebreaking, but I'm definitely not impressed with the AI. The game's still fun, but I had really expected more of a Deus Ex type experience than just a standard FPS with inventory and mundane quests.
