So a Russian retail dvd is region 5 but is only near dvd quality? Not actual dvd quality? Assuming R5 is retail of course.

Ok, I'll explain again. Due to piracy problems in Russia and loss of money major video labels agreed to publish those so-called R5 DVD releases as soon as possible after the movie hits the theaters.

As you can see, it's MUCH earlier than US and Europe thus there's no REAL DVD source to make those discs and that's why the labels OFFICIALLY authorized local manufacturers and license holders to make their own telecine (TC/film scan) copies, master them and publish as R5 DVDs.

Of course the real US and EU releases are made using digital source so they'll AWLAYS be better.

That's why R5's are considered near-DVD, being in fact extremely hq TCs
