PSP - hands down.
Battery life- Not an issue. It comes with built in rechargeable. I can play for about 4 hours or so until I need to recharge. Im never away from home that long.
I say PSP because of homebrew. Unlimited games, emulators, radio, even gps system is out for it.
I play movies at 480x320 res. Great quality. All on my 4gb memory stick.
Cant do this at all on DS.

I can only talk about the psp, cuz it´s the only I have.
If you like homebrew and hacking, is definitely the psp.
You can customize anything in it, it´s a better all-in-one device.
About the games, it have the best in my opinion, cuz looking at the best games of the DS, they all look for children. The DS is a good console and has great games, no doubt on that, but the PSP games are more my kind of game. Toca Race Driver, Virtua Tennis, PES, Metal Gear Solid, Syphon Filter, Lumines, Ratchet, NFS, GTA, Tekken, Street Fighter... and more
Best games for PSP according to gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/search/adv_search.php?qs=nfs
Best games for DS according to gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/search/adv_search.php?qs=nfs
See what games best suit you, that´s all that matters
EDIT: The links don´t work as I expected But choose a score over 8 and do a search for each console, PSP and DS.

Well I have both and the PSP is far superior to the DS in every aspect - graphics, sounds, controls, etc.
PSP standard battery lasts about 6 hr's on brightness '3'.
DS-X battery is over 10 hours.
Games for DS are more designed for kids & mostly the graphics are poor - like GBA standard. New games like Castlevania series look & sound great - so if you like Konami's masterpiece of platforming action then get the DS & get a suitable cart for it - M3, DS-X, etc. Also FF3 for NDS is a good game to play.
Also the touch screen is fairly lame - having to juggle controls and the pen are a pain - Nintendo should have left this feature out & just had a cool split screen with maybe better controls like shoulder buttons added to NDS.
Games for PSP are fantastic in terms of sound & graphics - Syphon Filter, Chili con Carnage, Ratchet & Clank, etc. With the amazing hacker/developer 'Dark Alex' we can enjoy an unlocked PSP capable of PSP & PSX games - so you can play the Final Fantasy series from the PS-1 on your PSP & just about any other PS1 game.
If you can only afford 1 - get PSP no question.
If you can afford 2 get them both (!)
You wanted a Miracle, I give you the F. B. Eye !!

Heh, easy there tiger, it's just an opinion.
Have both also and would probably recommend PSP as well. I think to choose the DS you have to be a Nintendo fan, and if you were, you wouldn't be asking this question here, you'ld probably already own one.

Its as simple as this.. If you want good RPG's, Puzzle and Platform games then you need a DS. If you want to play Playstation1 games and a VERY small number of decent PSP releases, go for the PSP.

I have also owned both since they both launched.
What I can say is if you want a BIGGER library you should go for PSP.
PSP is also the easiest to launch homebrew, and has a bigger library of homebrew (and now with POPStation the library is like, huuuuuge).
The PSP should keep you busy.
Now for the DS...
I love the DS more than the PSP, the games are fewer inbetween, but the good ones are REALLY good. Also the TouchScreen mechanic works VERY well in certain instances. It's just really fun.
Mario Kart, Lost Magic, Metroid, Jump! Ultimate Stars, Tetris DS, for online play are amazing.
There are single player gems as well. New Super Mario Bros is excellent, and the multiplayer mini-games are hilarious and awesome. (They make excellent use of the stylus.)
So what I'm trying to say is (imo) the PSP has a far greater library of mediocre/pretty good games, and more homebrew than you can shake a stick at for classics.
DS has more incredibly superb titles, and if I had to choose, I'd say DS in the end.
Good luck.

Advance Wars is probably worth the price of a DS. Near arcade perfect Teken DR on PSP is also amazing.

Have both, personally I prefer the PSP despite the insane controls, how can anyone say they are good??? personally I think younger gamers are put off by the crappy analogue stick and non-responsive d-pad.
But overall in my whole family, the DS wins hands down, it's used constantly night and day, the PSP just sits gathering dust untill I pick it up every now and again, everyone else ignores it.
I looked up "gormless" in the dictionary, it said "without gorm" .... so i looked up "gorm" but it wasn't there ????

The PSP is a portable console. The PSP could as well be a device you plugged to your TV.
I just enjoy the DS more, it just feels right as a handheld.
I do agree with the other guys here though - They are both great!!

it all boils down to what games u r into ,
i own both, and the NDS has more use from my 5 year old daughter whereas my PSP has more use from my 13 year old son who is a total gamer.
and TheBugulous i dont know what NDS u played but mine has shoulder buttons.

DS.
Dragon Quest 9 will be utter p0wnage.
Also if you have any interest in playing online, wifi is the shiznit.
The PSP analogue nub hurts after playing awhile, and its sorely lacking another one.
But that's just me.

I say DS too and the homebrew scene for the DS shouldn't be left out either, with great aps to receive mail, get into msn / icq and stuff, or just check out the weather. Plus it just looks more stylish in my eyes But that's a matter of taste, oh and my girlfriend loves playing with the ds.
