Post-Apocalyptic MMO RPG/FPS.
Pretty old game, but I only recently got to try it because they have a new trial out, and they accept PayPal now.
One of rare MMOG's that actually offer FPS action, no more turn based combat, or quickbar mashing. That's one thing that appeals me, other is the sci-fi world, as opossed to all the fantasy games out today.
Graphics are a bit outdated, but after few hours, you really don't notice, because, after all, gameplay is what matters 8
Would be excelent if there were more people playing. (Actually with more people + newer graphics + bigger development team, it would be a p e r f e c t game for me, because mix of Massively Multiplayer, RPG, FPS and Sci-Fi is all I want, yet it is impossible to find)

This game stole 2 years of my life!!!!! I loved NeoCron. I couldn't quit -- luckily when i got a new CC and my old one expired i never updated the expiration date and the account died. I played a tank.
Capped char, cursed soul, mech suit (forget the proper name)
I was in "The Gang" clan - we controlled 3/4 of the map for a few months.

This is Neocron 2 actually, as I figured it out, it's not really a new game, but an expansions of an old Neocron. Coz I played Neocron, and now I'm playing NC2, and it's the same map, perhaps better gfx, can't remember really.

FPS as in aim in the general direction of the enemy and fire? Sure. though even WOW with its "target enemy and face in that general direction" has this...

Perhaps, if you played a PSI (Mage) where you just had to click the enemies target box - using firearms actually involved real aiming.
Anyways, this game has been dead to me for nigh on 3 years now, pathetically low population, awful client stability that they failed to resolve in the 2 years I'd known the game and a lack of content. It was my first MMO and I loved it for a time but any potential it had/has was never realised.

Perhaps, if you played a PSI (Mage) where you just had to click the enemies target box - using firearms actually involved real aiming.
Anyways, this game has been dead to me for nigh on 3 years now, pathetically low population, awful client stability that they failed to resolve in the 2 years I'd known the game and a lack of content. It was my first MMO and I loved it for a time but any potential it had/has was never realised. |
Real aiming? Wasn't it just to have the crosshair s o m e w h e r e on your target, like, aim at the foot and still hit upper torso??? No hitboxes, no head shots, no compensating your aim for movement... No skill...
Correct me if I'm wrong but this is how I remember this game when I tried it out.

As I recall headshots did more damage, and blasting people in the legs would hamper their movement so there were damage zones. But yes you had to aim at their box, no leading targets or anything so it wasn't really comparable to a regular FPS but still, it was a damn sight better than combat in most MMO's and skill was very much a factor.
At least when PSI monks weren't involved, anyway The developers inability to balance the PPU (Healer class) was a big part of this games downfall, they were next to impossible to kill and able to make another player next to invincible aswell. A real downer on the PVP in this game.
And of course the infamous FRE's (fatal runtime error) that would regularly crash the game at the most aukward moment, getting stuck in endless synch's when changing zones, changing into other peoples characters o.O the list goes on.
NC did alot of things right, the PVP (minus monks) and the crafting was very involved and rewarding, probably the best crafting system I've seen in an MMO (I've played my fair share) but as is usually the case with such a promising game - the developers just didn't have the resources to realise its potential.

It's the same as any other mix of FPS and RPG, you can't have FPS system like in FEAR and mix in RPG elements. Deus Ex and System Shock 2 both have similar combat systems as NC. I have no interest in playing MMOFPS(without the RPG).

to bad it has a really low population else I would still play it.

For example, how are you gonna handle aiming? Aiming should be improved with skill use, therefore you should use a Deus Ex system.
Headshots, or one-kill shots, cannot happen, RPG is a skill based game, and a noob with a sniper rifle cannot take a high level out with one shot, which brings us to another point, and that is a HP bar. Expand these arugments a little, and you will see you cannot have a FEAR style shooter with RPG elements. HP itself is a rock-solid argument, as you can't have a RPG without it, and with it, you cannot allow standard shooter combat, that allows one-hit kills with sniper or granades, among other things.
Actually, deus ex gameplay, is closest you can get to standard FPS action, with RPG elements.
Note to Freudian: flame wars really are useless, because nobody ever wins, and I can always crush your arugments, and you can always crush mine, and we can go on so into infinity. This time I dignified you with a response, next time I'll just ignore you.

That of course, depends on how you balance the MMO in the first place. And you state this, as if it were some law and not your opinion.
Options would be to only increase the damage in sensitive areas, hence skill...

Again with the stating of this opinion as if it was written in the MMO bible...
If necessary to skip the HP bar, which I don't think it is in my idea of the ideal FPSMMO, I could think of several ways to skip the HP bar.
For example, you could have a 2d miniature representation of your body where the damaged area took on a red coloring the more damaged it was...
I think you need to think a little out of the box and realize that MMO's are in its cradle right now. Give it a few years and you will see I'm right.
Also, check this gaming concept out before you say, or think that this kind of game will never happen...

Age of Conan will be a good step in this direction also I think.
Oh and I will also save the ones saying "Oh yeah, point proved, this game will never be released!" the trouble of commenting by saying:
Making ground breaking games is hard, it takes some failures before these games are successfully made.
But please, by all means, keep claiming the earth is flat and that humans never will be able to fly =)

Just got this straight, AoC will probably NOT have any inventive combat system. Too bad...
They really have some false marketing regarding their combat system, which just ain't very "new" or "inventive" at all. It's actually very very like Neocrons combat system.
Well... Give it a couple of years and we'll be there. A true MMO-RPG-FPS, with collision detection and all, that will blow your mind away.

Think they should lower their subscription, perhaps make the game download free, and just charge like 7-10$ a month, or even less, and they would increase the population at least threefold, which would get them more money... And we get more people to play with. Although the chat is still pretty active for such a low population.
I didn't do any market research on the info, I just think the subscription is a bit steep for it, since you can get much newer and "better" games for the same price. (Better in graphics and size, not in gameplay or environment, ofc those are subjective...)

Such a complex game. I'm doing delivery missions to various factions. I'm given a name to take a package to and an arrow to follow. But the arrow seems to have a mind of it's own.
Anyone got any tips for me.

Yeah..complex..
First tip, don't do delivery missions. Do mob farming missions. Second tip, find a clan who has a bunch of spy mules who can construct stuff. Third tip, don't ever buy anything from a store unless you need to blueprint it. That's about it until endgame. These are tips are from pre-DOY times so they may not be as applicable anymore.
