I like the game, but the exremely long loading times for tactical combat missions annoy the hell out of me.

Sure, up to 20 secs loading times with a regular harddrive, kind of long I agree.
If you have longer loading times than this, consider freeing some disc space, defrag drive or get a faster HD/CPU.

Lol takes like 10 seconds maximum for me And then im just running on a standard IDE 72000rpm harddrive. Must be either my 2gb ram or my graphics cards 320mb ram
I really love this game Its so damn fun with all the research and terraforming and discoveries you make. I read em all! Its fun I really like the idea that the martians communicated by manipulating an em field around them lol!
I play on Easy Easy tough. I played on Easy (strategic) Medium (tactical) at first, but i kept dieing dammit, hard game. So changed it in the save files lol.
I wish there was a setting between Easy and Medium, cuz medium is too hard and easy is too easy lol.
Especially at the strategic level, those "your territory is invaded" annoys me like hell on Medium, happens all the time.

When reading the afterlight support forum it seems its a known memory leak that causes the long loading times, they advise to reload the game every hour or so.

Here is what I do against the deadly beastmen:
1) Always try to get the high ground. The aliens seem to hit my soldiers less when I am higher than them. Best is up on 3rd level of a refinery and shoot down on them.
2) Always keep your soldiers very close together formed usually in a line. When a beastman appears all your guys can open up on him without fear of friendly fire.
3) If your soldiers are trained enough make them crouch or even lie down for protection (when terrain allows that is).
4) On some maps I find it best to stick to the outer edges of the map so you can't get flanked. Once you have killed enough of them move to the center.

The memory leak is certainly there, sometimes it took so long to load that the screensaver kicked in Otherwise, while the game isn't nearly as good as the original UFO, it's better than the other After-- games. I agree that it got very repetitive after a while, so I started cheating on the defensive missions after I've played each tactical map 10 times.
I hope somebody's still reading this occasionally, cause I wanted to ask about the very end of the game. I killed everyone and took over all the territories, including the ex-allied reticulan ones, and there's only one beastman fort left. It says it's probably impossible to defeat them with conventional methods (or something like that), and each time I try it, the game says I'm outnumbered and have to leave. There's nothing left to research and I don't know what to do. Is there anything I'm missing? TIA.

Frist of all, its not "just bam". At first you only get to see beastmen. Only after 2-3 missions do captains appear, and it takes another 2-3 at least for the alchemists to show up. Sure its all in a rather short time, so unless you have anything to 'throw' at them, you will feel some pain.

Now I am desperately trying to research anything that has to do with getting better weapons and praying the aliens don't land on one of my territories. Somehow I smell a total restart in my near future

Guess what.. im near end game, and i regularly have to 'lose' territories because they would be played on maps where they enemy simply has too much of an advantage. Try to get rid of the old XCOMish - i win all fights - attitude, and you'll realize that the game kicks ass.. Research some techs and pray you do not lose all your land while in the process.. Land can be taken back you know In some cases it is easier to win it back, than it is to protect it. I find the beastmen bases to be a lot more 'squad' friendly than my own installations, which is a shame...
In fact the thing i love most about UFO:AL is that for the first time im not in charge of the A-Team defeating every badass alien in the world, but rather more like a group of middle aged scientists and wanna be soldiers, who can get hurt and even die.
PeeCee_Gamer wrote: |
Grrrrrrrrrrrr. I knew it was too good to be true. Altar games piece of crap, lol. |
I know how you feel, as i felt the same way at first.. coming from games like xcom and ja, where you usually win pretty much every battle.. losing them made me angry. Then again, this is a different game - as i wrote above - so don't expect to be successful every time.
Just a few examples when you will be unable to defend your land anyway:
- You just finished a mission, where 2/3 of your squad got heavily injured. Going on a mission with 35-40% strength is surely an option, but will undoubtfully end in a disaster.
- You just met a new kind of alien against whom you simply have no real chance. (this will happen a few times, trust me) Going on a mission against these would surely result in a disaster.
- You have lost a fuel source earlier because of the above conditions, and now you are unable to reach the land where the aliens are attacking
Just a few tips on how to fight aliens:
--- IF YOU WANT TO FIGURE THIS OUT YOURSELF, THEN DO NOT READ.. I'LL TRY TO KEEP SPOILERS TO A MINIMUM ---
1) Protection, protection and even more protection (can you spell: TANK?)
Thats basically what you need right from the start. To be successful, you have to go on missions. To do that, you need to be healthy, to do THAT, you have to make sure not to die from the first hit. Go for heavy suit ASAP. Major suit wearing only becomes available once you researched heavy suits and since it takes 2 days to train a soldier for their use, its best to get that tech early.
2) Health
Comes hand to hand with protection. The more HP, the more chance of surviving. If you have 100 hp, then you can't really go onto a mission with 50 or even 75% health, as 100hp in itself is not enough, let alone 50 or 75. If you have 250-400hp however, being 25-50% wounded sounds not that bad. Always go for strength + willpower upgrades first. Boost your constitution to supernatural (willpower will also increase your aiming in the process ). Once you have supernatural const, or even earlier, you might consider thoughness trainings. Just to get an idea.. minor thoughness makes a 256hp supernatural soldier to have 400. So its quite a difference.
3) Visibility
Many complain about the visibility in game. At first its really a bit problematic, but there is something you can, and have to do:
Always fight in bright daylight. Most aliens have a vastly superior night vision than your pityful human eyes. Fighting them at night gives them a tremendous advantage, that you - trust me - dont want them to have. Key to killing an enemy is seeing the enemy: you can't see them if its dark out there. So make sure to only fight during the day.
Later you can research some vision technologies and produce related suit addons, but i still prefer to fight in the daylight.
4) Weapons
Not every weapon is useful against every kind of alien. While lasers might perform well against beastmen, reticulans will just laugh at you and will barely feel a tickle. There are differences however, even amongs the same 'race'. So don't take it granted, that every ret will die from projectiles, and that every beastmen will die from lasers.
Generally the initial rifles - the ones you research first through firearms (as that IS the first research you do) - are enough for quite a long time. That is, if you keep the above advices in mind, and only fight when you can use the range of the rifles. Later you will get more powerful weaponry and that will make killing easier.
Remember, after the earth supply lands, you get two warp cannons. Those are universal killers, good against almost everything.
5) Training
This might sound .. odd.. but i do find, that heavy equipment training is just as neccessary for everyone, as say: major suit wearing. The reason is simple: some of the best of the weapons out there - warp cannons, laser cannons, chainguns - are all heavy weapons. It is really a shame if your squad dies because the only person who could operate the warp cannons gets wounded. Other useful training options have been mentioned earlier.
The following trainings are common to all my soldiers:
major suit wearing
major thoughness
minor heavy equipment
6) Research
Just as i wrote in a different post: every research is important. I find the lack of a visible research tree a missing feature in the game.. so i advise everyone to grab a research tree and study the layout to get an idea what researches are good for. Its easy to ignore reticulan technologies for example, while in reality that is a top priority research, as it opens up the crystal and noble metal mining techs (not to mention laser weaponry).
Medicine and especially autopsies are required for interrogation, which is also necessary to learn the usage of advanced alien weaponry. Study the tech tree and make sure you have a variety of different damage type weapons at your disposal.
I hope the above helps some for those who are starting a game. Don't be afraid to sacrifice territories unless their resources are absolutely needed for an upcoming production or something.Territories can be taken back. Soldiers dead / hours spent on trying to make an impossible mission are lost forever.

Anyone else having issues with random lockups while in the planetary view? I get them frequently, it just locks and sits there - have to tab over and end the process, never seems to pop up with an error messages and it always locks while in the planetary view.
Been wondering if it's the crack, or something to do with my hardware.
ASUS A8N-SLI -- X2-4200
2GB RAM
GF 7800
Forums suggested disabling one of the processors, tried that, still locks - updated processor drivers & graphics.

It's killing this game for me, which is too bad, cause I really enjoy it when it's not crashing.

Finally i found some time to try out UAL and after some hours of play i must admit that it's rather enjoyable. I have still to try out ET tough so i cannot compare them. Loading times to me are rather short, 10-20 secs at maximum with a 2 years old hardware machine.
Time to go to fry some aliens

After a couple of weeks of intense playing i'm near the end, with the classic 1 beastmen territory left and a terraformation of 22% ... slowly building terraforming stations and researching what i left behind ... at this point a couple of days ago it becomes terribly boring !
Waiting for the terraformation to go up in percentile, building terraforming stations and continuously fighting the aliens that keep attacking me on the same maps, doing always nearly identical battles over and over again ... woahhh ...
My last experience with this enjoyable game up to 2 days ago will be this evening when i'll hit the unistall icon ...
Nice nice nice for a dozen days then terribly repetitive !
