Well, i did watch an UFO:ET gameplay vid a few days ago.. a long one i have to add.
It is just what i expected based on the screenshots. They made an xcom 1.5 basically. From that video, i dare to say its inferior even to the original, not to mention the many other tactical small squad games released since then.
I'm sure there will be people playing it, but i would rather go for XCOM:UFO and the unofficial patch, than to play the cheap copy/paste result called UFO:ET.

I just can't let this go. No serious fan of strategy would complain? How about serious fan of tactical games? Real-time can actually be implemented in a good manner, but unfortunately, Aftershock isn't a good example. There may be a inch of tactics here and there, but unfortunately game really doesn't make you employ them, as it's too goddamn easy. Mostly you just press button, watch aliens die, rinse and repeat. And katanas. Seriously, what the fuck?

Care to explain? It's real time, yet you can stop it whenever you want, giving you all the thinking / order giving freedom turn based is so much praised for.
I don't know what stuff you are on to even make that comparison. Yeah.. the AI is not exceptionally good in AS, we've come to that conclusion a few times already. This however has nothing to do with tactical depth. There are few - if any - games out there that offer more options on the tactical level.
Not to mention the existance of mods, which if you use can enhance / change the gameplay in a drastical manner. For example try playing alien assault mod without reloading the game every time you lose a soldier. I wonder if you would ever get those katana wielding terminators, or generally if you would even consider going close combat when there are 10x as many enemies as in the vanilla game, and if you make it a rule not to reload every 5 minutes.

When the AI doesn't offer any real resistance, any tactical depth game offers becomes obsolete, making the game bad. Can't get more simpler than that. And I judge games as they are released (and patched). Not by their mods.

Well, UFO:ET will be a unofficial sequel to XCOM1&2, with better graphics and such. It's like Settlers2 10th Aniversary. Would you rather play Settlers 2 with today's graphics or Setlers 3-5 with that crappy gameplay?
But i disgress.
Afterlight will be released in the coming week, if we're to look at the release date. I hope it's a good game, but just by making the graphics more comicsy(?) and keeping the weird gameplay in place won't make it better than it's predecessors.
This game will succeed if it will provide more than the handfull of maps that Aftershock had(12 or so), an AI who is not like the brain of a drugged zombie(Aftershock excelled at that, it was like playing Diablo2, all enemies were homing on you, without any attempt at tactics), the bugs won't be too gamebreaking(but being made by Altar i wouldn't get my hopes up) and a gameplay who won't play against you, but rather for you(interface options, camera options, command orders, and so on)

the main advantage turn based has over pausable real time, and the single reason why most serious strategy fans prefers tb over rt is the fact that the ai can calculate its move properly, not the player.
while rt is the more logically coherent solution, tb offers many advantages over rt that are strategically and tactically more important than wondering why your tanks move while the others are standing still, and vice versa, simply because the cpu doesn't get clogged up with physics, pathfinding, scripting, and everything else. because of that you can have more acting units at once, no activation ranges, more complex pathfinding and behavioral algorithms, and so on.
either way, as for afterlight, i find it kind of cute. the comicy graphics at least make a better impression than the brown masses in the two previous titles, and work well with the slightly simplified controls. if you don't take it overly seriously as a strategy game it might actually be fun...

X-COM was always one my fav TB games along with JA and Fallout.
I'll skip ony this real time half baked attempt. Maybe UFO:ET gets it right.

This isn't trying to reenact the " Enemy unknown" or "Terror from the deep" games this is a seperate franchise which has 'nothing' to do with X-Com.
"UFO: Extraterrestrials" will be the spiritual sucessor to those games, this is not it!, thats not to say that this is a bad game as it's most certainly is not!, it's just not an "X-Com" game and if you expect it to be you 'will' be dissapointed.
Now as a "X-Com" vet I didn't like these games "Aftershock and Afterlight" but that was because I expected it to be something which it wasn't, now I see that it has it's place in the strategy landscape and can compete equally to the likes of "Enemy Unknown" 'if' you talk about playability and overall enjoyment of the game.
I will be playing this for a great many hours, but I will also be playing "UFO: Extraterrestrials" when that gets released and I hope it will give me the nostalgic feeling that I remember from my youth on the Amiga with the original X-Com.
However this is a good game in it's own right and the AI is vastly improved compared to it's predessor: It utilizes tactics now, like hiding behind stuff, flanking you, various levels on intelligence based on the "actual" intelligence of the creature, like say for instance a dumb malfunctioning droid will not be able to flank you as it's just not in it's programming but a group of elite reticulans will flank you or set traps while running away from your superior numbers causing you to blow up or get cut in two if you fail detecting them.
You can construct your own weapons, this means you might research some new odd part which you discover and turn that into a weapon, thats fine but how about you combine this new weapons with other parts that you have or will discover later creating a vastly superior weapon than what you might have got if you just stuck with the vanilla version.
Also theres a big strategic aspect in the game, meaning you have to fight for and build mines, drillers and wells to maintain a constant flow of resources for your base to produce, research and build new buildings and functions for your base.
You have to train your people and have a strategy about what you want them to be or do which can get quite statisfying if you train some of your people to use technology which you find in the field or you train them to use implants or you train them as "dual classes" like a soldier/tech or civil engineer/scientist to discover new technologies or specialize in new fields of research.
Theres really alot more here than meets the eye, it's just not a "meh it's not X-com game" it's a great game in the same way that Oblivion is a great game but it's no Daggerfall

Excellent way to make whole rant obsolete. |
What once was will always have been better than what is, just ask any old geezer, the game is good and has many redeeming qualities in it, but whatever flamebait.

UFO: Afterlight is a mixture of squad based tactical action and global strategy with the
gamer controlling the actions of elite ground troops, and the running and construction of
an intricate network of interlinking bases while collecting resources.
UFO: Afterlight takes us to Mars, where a human colony has been built with the help of the
Reticulans not long before the events of UFO: Aftershock took place. Mars base is
self-sustainable and provides all the necessities for survival of humans on a foreign planet,
mainly breathable air, water and food. Although the people inhabiting this colony have the
technologies and knowledge required for their further development, basic survival is their
major concern. Their only activity is the research of a nearby excavation site, which proves
the existence of an ancient intelligent and highly developed alien civilization.
The player will enter the game when the research drastically affects all Mars inhabitants.
New and unexpected enemies appear in the form of robots, built centuries ago by the unknown
aliens for their protection, whose purpose is to eliminate any traces of other civilizations
on Mars.
Humans on Mars now have a good reason for their own development, even though not knowing yet
that the planetary self-defense mechanism might not be the worst awaiting them, and that their
unintentional opening of hyperspace gates will bring an even bigger enemy right to their door.
After all attempts to contact the Earth Laputa fail, the colonists are left with no other choice
than to fight the enemies with their own means, or be annihilated.
