Don't know how true this is. If it is though, I wouldn't mind trying it out.

Quote: | Iranian hackers crack Windows Vista, sell it on street for $8 a copy
All the effort Microsoft has put into making sure this Windows would be the most secure ever appear to be somewhat in vain. Iranian hackers, operating through a legitimate software firm, have gotten past all of Microsoft's "anti-copying tricks". These hackers claim they will sell these illegitimate copies of Windows Vista through the firm they work for at approximately $8 USD a copy. What's really interesting, though, is how they managed to give each pirated copy of Vista it's own serial number, so that they can register it through Microsoft as a legal copy of Windows Vista.

From Keznews.com forum:
"I bought a Window Vista Pack (Installation DVD + Crack) in Iran 6 weeks ago. It uses the well-knwon 2099 + timer stop (which MS calls it twenty-some steps crack)."

Yes, but is it automated, or are the steps still required?

That seems... false? I mean I would presume Microsoft would cross-check your Windows Vista key against their database keys for legitimation.

Because it is impossible to generate legit keys, unless you have direct access to MS license generating mainframes. Do you?
Now about the dude with 98, you do know there's a certain chance you've hit a genuine key, right?

Well, we shall have to wait and see... Hey, a key is always better than a crack, so I'm all for it. If MS is dumb enough not to check with the mainframe during the activation, hell, they deserve to pwnd by some hacker.

there are keygens that check for validity
it can take several hours and like 500 keys generated to get 3 valid keys

Yeah, they do nothing... It's not like they check with MS. The deal with them is that not every key that answers the formula is actually accepted by Windows. More tests have to be made to determine if the key is valid for Windows. But that doesn't assure activation and/or WGA.
Oh and to the guy who asked why bother with cracks... Finally have a good answer: Because of WGA!
