Actually there is a form for open pvp and evil side.
At lvl 10 you can control monsters in a pvp area. You dont gain xp but some kind of monster points that can be used to "buy" even bigger and better monsters or skills.

Dudes, you DO know that you can't talk about anything in the game except in the official BETA forums right? Because of the NDA so you guys who posted about in-game stuff, should delete them...

Its basically like a more mature version of WoW. With all the good parts (fluid combat unlike say everquest's locked-in style), you can run around while fighting and the AI creatures will NOT run and stand "inside" you, finally a game that has fixed that annoying thing, the crafting and harvesting system, the quest system etc etc.
Also its pretty similar graphically, but as i said with a much more mature tone to it, much sharper textures (what game DOESNT have sharper textures than WoW??), and more realistic/better models and terrain.
And not to mention an actual incentive to NOT dieing, xp penalty and such.
Plus the fact that you can have titles and many "not-allowed" names, doesnt sound like much but its really cool.
When you have 30 people running around in Bree, instead of just seeing "L00TerM4st3r" and "G1mL1Killah", you get actual names, so far pretty much EVERY single player in the beta has chosen a very very fitting name with the LOTR world, which is an impressive playerbase to say the least.
You actually get to see people named properly, and with whatever titles they have earned trough quests or achievements, like killing 300 wolves or discovering something!
Like "Liarthon, Wolf Hunter", "Baleurion of Lórien" , "Baleur, Apprentice Weaponsmith", "Bugfoot The Weary", "Grum, Guardian of Ered Luin" and such. Really adds ALOT to the immersion factor instead of having all the "l337-kids" with their fucked up number-names
I really like it, and will prolly buy it. But only because i really miss MMORPG's and i dont wanna touch WoW again, and due to Vanguard being so fuckin buggy and harvest items being so insanely rare.
I'd even dare to say that this will be the best MMORPG (rpg, not counting eve online and such) out to date.
The LOTR universe is just a big plus, NOT a bad game wrapped in a good brand, which i was relieved to find out.

Well, i think WoW is still a great game, in the core mechanics of it. The harvesting of resources and crafting is relaxed and really nice to get into, the combat is fluid and responsive.
But what has kept me away from it for a year now is the community, the people in the game. Sure there are exceptions, but i just grew tired of the kiddies =D
And the pure style of the game, i like it, some nice artwork too, but i just want something a bit more mature in terms of art design and stuff.

uhhuh.. So again: what makes this actually different. Restrictions on naming, and sharper graphics don't make the gameplay any better. Same with XP penalties for death. You mention questing, harvesting, crafting, but don't exactly elaborate on what if anything is better there. Or a more direct question, is it just the same grind with a different skin?

WoW never was a grind game. If you think that you should try the other MMORPG's out there WoW always was about the quests, and trying to find a fun way for you to progress trough the game. LOTRO is the same way, but more mature.
And i cant say anything specific about whats better, its just better.
But if you wanna know if its a complete WoW ripoff, some people will think so at first glance, no doubt. But if you take the game for what it is, a LOTR game, its got an amazing atmosphere and the gameplay is imo better than any other mmorpg fantasy game that ive played, i cant think of a specific reason, it just is.

That's enough to not make me player it to be honest, I played Everquest 1 back in the day, and dying and loosing experience which took you half your day to get then having to beg some priest to resurrect you so you could get half of it back was stupid. Or other things like raiding with friends, and spending that long trying to suss and encounter that you actually de-leveled from 60 to 59 and had 10 hours of grinding to look forward too.

No need to get touchy, I'm just giving me view on the idea of loosing experience when you die.
