Graphics is ok and sound is alright but it sounds very stupid when the same phrase is repeated over and over. The level design was very dull and uninspiring, the enemies you encounter was a bit more original though.
Thief3 is miles and miles ahead when it comes to building up tension and has much better / smarter soundFX + it has better shadows (very important in a horror game), and much scarier just because you cant get away with slaughtering everything in sight. 65/100 would be my score. |
I hated all the resident evil games because of that, they rely on cheap scares rather then psychological horror.
Cheap scares work, for awhile, they are much easier to do, and require alot less effort and thinking on the part of the dev's.
I always enjoyed the Silent Hill series more then RE for that reason, it relies on tricking the mind, and building up tension for long periods of time, then, when the time is right they unleash the monsters. You dont have to kill the monsters, you can get through most of the game without killing stuff, their place in the game is to support the eerie atmopshere already presented to you without the use of waves and waves of enemies.
I havnt played this game yet, and im hoping that it can provide more then cheap thrills.

Well, the game is a lot more action oriented than the Silent Hill series. However, it does have some awesome psychological horror since the entire game is based around the innocence/guilt of your character. There is also a lot of moral and ethical issues u face alone the way.
Trust me, if u like horror, u'll like this game.

Anyone know of a fix or a workaround for the game just immediately crashing with the XP "Program has encountered a problem and needs to close." message?
Also, does anyone know if there are company forums for this game, I'd be interested in seeing how widespread the problem is... =)

Just started playing... It's scary, it's stressing but somehow it doesn't meet Silent Hill standards... Silent hill is still the best horror-series imo.

* spoiler alert *
well, that's it. 20 levels of suffering. i actually liked this game, a rare event from the many games i've played the past year or two. the thing that really had me interested and entertained was the story line. the action was good too and yes sometimes it was pretty scary (no lights, 5.1, loud). the game is not that short either as i heard rumoured. plus i beat it pretty quickly only because i had it on the lowest difficulty. one dissappointing thing though. the ending ( the 1 of 3 i got) was too quick and cheap. i beat a huge monster, unlocked a couple archive pages, saw how my family REALLY died (t. remembered i guess) and then left the island on a boat. i am hoping the other 2 endings are better. i am guessing in one ending it shows that i killed my family, in one (the one i got) someone else (bad guys in black) killed my family and left me alive because of orders and the 3rd one i don't know. oh yeah and like 5 archive pages were still unlocked, possibly because i didn't explore enough, or maybe just because of the difficulty/ending/how much i explored or whatever. all in all i give it an 8.3/10.

I've noticed that there is a certain music that plays in The Suffering during a fight that is identical to the music in Far Cry when you engage the enemy. The music is virtually identical
