Performance comparison and they also test the ultra textures.

EDIT: In one of the config files the HD Pack is called "; High Mip Archives" so it might be that it only enhances the mip-map of the textures which means objects further away from the player / camera.

Yeah I just edited my post a bit since I discovered the comment for the texture pack is " ; High Mip Archives " as such it is possible only the mi-maps are enhanced and that means stuff further away from the player.
(Texture resolution being halved after a certain distance and then halved again a certain distance from that and so on, means you would see the full texture detail further out but near texture detail remains identical since it's already at full resolution.)

Damn.. I say they fucked us big time. Laughing What I see on the screen having ultra textures enabled regardless of distance doesn't warrant 5-5.5GB VRAM usage at 1080p

just test this on my rig i5 3.40 and gigabyte 780
1920/1080
all max except texture on HIGH

Max:226.26
Average: 71.84
Min: 38.14

and with texture on ultra

Max:227.21
Average: 70.55
Min: 35.17

no much of a differences between high and ultra !

Textures going above your VRAM limit usually doesn't manifest in lowered framerates, but rather intermittent stutters.

So in other words Ultra textures only affects to VRAM usage not image quality (since you cant see even to the distance). Its like Crysis 2 invisible water tesselation Laughing

I also don't get the people saying it looks amazing.. imo it's passable at best, i personally think that witcher2 looks better.

So what exactly does it need all that VRAM for? Aside from the fact that it's obviously just a mip-map change, the actual textures themselves are fucking horrible. CoD: Ghosts called, it wants its joke back.

I didn't notice it at first but when you select Ultra preset it sets AO to high, not ultra and when you switch it to ultra it has a noticeable fps drop..

Average FPS and so forth isn't necessarily best for this test. If Ultra "needs" 6GB VRAM, we can expect stuttering as it loads and processes textures more than anything.

So, is there stuttering?

something weird has happened.. I had to restart my PC and now when I launch steam it doesn't detect that I have SOM installed already WTF!?
any way to fix it?

your conspiracy theory doesn't make any sense whatsoever. nvidia just released cards that are 4GB, if anything this is bad for nvidia and customers who just bought 4GB cards might be angry.

Well they could be better but I find them to be OK although for the VRAM amount they do use they could look a lot better. Very Happy

Some screens, for the intro sequence the game often moves between in-game and pre-rendered which looks a bit jarring since those seem to be ~720P only.

EDIT: Framerate is around ~40 or so but I am using everything at max (Including the HD pack of "mip-maps" or whatever it does.) and a screen scale of 150% or 2880x1600 but downsampled.
(Tried 200% but 3840x2400 causes the framerate to drop below 30 which I'm trying to avoid.)

Why would people get angry? If it was some super amazing omg looking game with huge differences between high and ultra someone might give a fuck.. but this? Laughing

Also someone tested it on a 980 on ultra textures and no stuttering. I'd test it as well but not gonna waste time downloading and installing this to uninstall 2mins later Sad
