Ive been playing VG since beta 1, and it was pewp. For an MM it was missing the element of fun. I've been playing MMs since the realm and this game just doesn't do it for me. I was a big EQ fan and Brad just didn't evolve enough to make something special.
I've been playing LOTRO beta and I'm desperately anticipating Age of Conan.
Also, what up, long time no see I was WoWing for a while leading an endgame raiding guild (cleared Naxx as a class officer etc) Anyway, sold my account for $850 and have moved on. I quit because WoW has too many douchebags who should NOT be playing in an online community. Might see me around here again for all the old schoolers

Anyone know where the beta forums are? I never got an email telling me where they were or anything.

Eh well. The patcher says it will take up to 72 hours. I thought it had been longer but it hasn't yet. Guess I will keep waiting. In game people tell you to stop asking for help and just read the forums. So figured I would see what was on there if I could.

Stupid bugs. The queen quest is bugged so you cant continue the diplomat storyline in leth. I want my horse!
Anyway I'm really liking the game. It seems like fun. The diplomacy system is actually really neat.

My girlfriend and I played the game all night. We really enjoy the neat innovative systems they introduced - like the enhanced harvesting in groups or the diplomacy system. The worlds appears to be quite immersive and the fights are fun, even for a healing class. Vanguard gives me the "I don't know if I will ever be able to fully comprehend you"-feeling I had with Everquest once.... And in Everquest I ended up being a member of a very successful guild. First to complete Uqua... *shudders*... and suddenly I remember why I stopped played EQ.....
Anyway, great game. Going to buy it when it is released in Europe.

Will it have european servers btw? It's set to be released the 30ths (which sounds pretty much impossible) but I would like to know if it will have EU servers up by then too.

I just managed to get into LOTRO after 24h of trying, and I played for about 20 minutes. I haven't seen much, but what I have seen I don't like too much. It's based on DDO engine, very obvious, therefore everything (I've seen so far) is instanced, and loading zones are every few minutes, means no open ended world (Again, i'm just at the start, might be later). Gfx are bleh, DDO type, char customization is pretty limited.
So far I like the large open-ended world of Vanguard 10x better, it's obvious where more effort went. Turbine created 2 games with same engine, but with good franchises, obviously only to collect cash, and not to give us an innovative experience, while Vanguard went the other way.

Starting tutorial mission is instanced and takes around 20 minutes, so that's pretty much all you saw. LotRO has a huge fucking world which isn't instanced.
I think LotRO and Vanguard both suck and will move soon after release to a pile of MMOs-only-for-diehard-fanboys-that-noone-else-cares-about.
There are only 2 MMO's worth something at this moment, that is WoW and EVE Online.

Well I tried this earlier. Did someone mention the fact it's released soon. Well if the game is 20gb expect a 5gb patch. Unfinished quests, the lack of a decent economy are to name but two of the problems with the game. I honestly expected more from the EQ team, I didn't get it. The thing is is they expect people to pay for it. It does have the potential for a good game. But right now, it will take another year.

Wow was worthless and Eve would have been much better if you could be 5-6 in each ship and have planets to explore without your ship.
Best mmorpg (imo) still is DAoC. Vanguard feels very good atm - sure it has bugs and shit but as its an mmorpg it wont bother me much cos I know they will patch it asap + as with all mmorpgs you atleast don't have to search for the updates as it will autodownload them for you when ever they are avaible. I've been playing the beta for a couple of days now and its the first mmorpg in ages that that I got hooked on - and decided to instant buy. This will be a great mmorpg while I wait for Warhammer - and who knows, it might even be the only mmorpg ill bother with.

Quote: | Carolyn Koh catches up with Brad "Aradune" McQuaid and Paul "GM Vladimir" Luna at CES in Las Vegas.
With their marketing collaboration with SoE, Brad McQuaid and Paul Luna of Sigil Games showed Vanguard: Saga of Heroes at CES 2007 at invited press appointments. After introductions, we chatted about our gaming history and when Paul asked if I were familiar with Brad, my answer was tongue in cheek as I replied that I was familiar with Aradune, a wood-elf ranger in EverQuest who wore green splint mail and implied that he hacked Soulfire – the Paladin epic weapon so he could wield it.
We waited to connect to the server and I asked Brad, “Who’s idea was it to put Aradune is stinky! Graffiti in the Qeynos sewers?” Bill Trost was the answer – one of the original team of developers of EverQuest. We digressed into how quickly screenshots of Aradune corpses made their way around the internet. “So I forgot to put up enduring breath in Kedge Keep.” Brad said laughingly, but enough of old EverQuest anecdotes and toward Vanguard:Saga of Heroes.
Given who the founder… the visionary for Vanguard is, we cannot get away from EverQuest, as it was the basis of experience for Vanguard. A fact that both Paul and Brad alluded to often. The launch is February. Next month. We could have spent an entire day just going over the features and exploring the game. NDA has been lifted so information is not just spilling over the dam, the floodgates are open.
“Who will want to play Vanguard?” I asked.
“We wanted to recreate the experience for the old school DAoC and EQ player. The player who wants to be challenged, but we also did away with the tedium.” Said Brad.
Paul continued, “Also the WoW players who wants more immersion and challenge. Those are the players that Vanguard will appeal to.”
As Brad stepped away to call someone to figure out why we could not log into the game, I took the opportunity to grill Paul a little, asking him about Brad’s vision for Vanguard. What’s important? “The community.” Was the firm answer. “We’ve learned to listen to the community.” He reminded me that Vanguard was six years in the making.
“There’s a misconception out there that Vanguard is a hardcore game, but you make it as hardcore as you want. Vanguard isn’t about walking uphill in the snow, both ways. We recognize that we will have Casual, Core and Raid players.” Taking the death mechanic as an example, there are three ways to deal with it. One can choose to pay a little money, wait a little while or fight your way back.
Paul grinned at this point, “Both Brad and I are the die-hard, run naked to our corpses type.”
Brad also stressed the importance of community and elaborated on the features that would assist in creating that community, especially vertical integration. Players will eventually outlevel their starting cities, but housing plots are planned around cities. Diplomacy is also leveled in the city, apart from trading and crafting stations. There are two huge major cities and a number of outposts. The plan is to watch where people congregate once the game is launched and to place outposts in those areas as well.
Grouping and social interfaces within game will allow players to fill out a personal profile that provides more information such when they normally play, their crafting skills and IM or email info if they wish.
Brad informed me that 50 to 60% of content is geared toward the Core player. That core player, he opined, made up 80% of any MMOGs. Those are the players that would play 2 – 3 hours a day, 3 or 4 days a week. Perhaps they would play longer sessions on weekends and would plan a day to dedicate a larger chunk of time for a raid. To that end, zones and dungeons were designed to have safe areas for players to rest and camp out in.
Vanguard is a game of choices. It is designed as a social game much like EverQuest was and provides incentives to players to do things together, but also allows a player to solo if they choose to. Players working together to gather resources, for example, open up opportunities with the combination of their skills to obtain better raw materials that they as a solo harvester may not be able to do. There will also be adventure and quest content that will require a group or groups to defeat.
I asked what differentiated Vanguard:Saga of Heroes from the rest of the MMORPGs out there. One is the unique encounter system. Not just encounter locking, but the entire series of encounters or route of a quest. Many a time, players go through certain steps to complete a quest only to have it ruined when a specially spawned NPC attacks a hapless player who happened to be in its path or an opportunist ganks the mob. Vanguard has designed a system to prevent that from happening.
“Other players will be able to see the mob, but won’t be able to select it to hail, attack or otherwise interact with it,” said Brad.
Another unique aspect of Vanguard is the Caravan system. Players joining a caravan may log out at anytime, and when they log back in, have the choice of logging in where they last camped out, or where the caravan leader last camped out. Basically a form of offline travel.
Player built ships will be another unique aspect of Vanguard. “Not since the days of Ultima Online will players be able to command a ship and sail where they choose,” Said Brad, waxing lyrical over the choice of mounts for transport. “It is a seamless world. You can travel anywhere that you can see.”
“We’ve also designed very unique experiences for each race.” Said Paul, telling me the story of how he inveigled an editor of a major newspaper who was not a gamer and had never played an MMOG before, into creating a character and playing through the newbie experience. “After a while, he asked me… Am I evil? Then when I offered to show him other areas of the game, he decided he wanted to continue playing. I consider that a measure of success. We hooked a non-gamer.”
Okay then… What’s the hook? Paul deferred that question to Brad, who sat silent for a moment before telling me. “Freedom of choice. The freedom to do what you want, go where you want. The freedom to play the game the way you want.” |

Thought I would bump this back up, since the game has been released by now. Despite a lot of client stability issues, server issues and annoying bugs this game got me hook,. Anyone from nforce playing it? If so, which server?
Been playing a bard on Infineum since it went live.

Well.. the short beta experience told me, how fantasy .. nothing to win, nothing to lose .. kind of MMOGs are not my cup of tea.
Then again, EVE-Online puts the bar really high there..
Still, if there is someone feels like writing a proper review of the complete game.. it would be interesting to see how far they've come since release.

Well I bought Vanguard the other day. My friend has been playing since release and she said it was good so i figured eh what the fuck i'll give it a try. I started off with a human necromancer on the topmost continent I think its called.. thestra? I didn't get too far in the character because I just wasnt enjoying it. That starting area they had felt reallly thrown together at the last minute. There werent really a lot of quests and the city was just like this tiny village where as an elven outpost I went to on my high elf ranger was just as big as it. I'm not sure I got a good enough experience on the necromancer to really see how the class itself played out.
So I decided to try out a high elf ranger instead of the necromancer. The high elf starting area was much better. Tons of quests and a nice area and lots of stuff to do. The ranger class I liked a lot more. Which is shocking considering in all rpgs rangers are usually awful. The diploamcy system I still think is one of the best parts of the game. Although I did find a sort of cheat with it that takes a lot of the fun and skill out of it. There is a storyline for each city that uses diplomacy and the story was atleast engaging and the process of unraveling it was enjoyable.
The game runs much better than the beta. Servers seem mostly stable. I'm not sure how well the game is balanced because I only been soloing up to now although I've heard I wont be able to solo much longer because the mobs will get too hard. I'm mostly interested in how the grouping is. This isnt really made to be a solo game and if you dont have soloing you better have damn good grouping and it shouldnt be hard for any class to get a group.
Anyway csebal asked for a review so there's my review of the game so far. If anyone is interested i'll post some update in the future once I find out more about the game.

The story with Vanguard is this -
Microsoft originally funded the development of Vanguard. However, as development progressed MS wasn't happy with what they were seeing (the MMO wasn't mainstream enough to pull in your average idiot MMO player). No mainstream = not enough money for MS to consider it a worthy investment.
Thus, Sigil told MS to go fuck themselves and Mr. McQuaid funded the rest of Vanguard's development out of his own pocket. His pocket ran dry so it was either release the beta as a retail and use the proceeds to continue development or scrap the game all together.
Obviously, they went with option A.
You're paying to play a late Alpha / Early Beta. After playing in the Vanguard "beta" 4 days before it was to be released vs. the LOTRO Beta the next day (which is due out 4/24)...well, the LOTRO Beta in January was about 20x more polished (felt like I was playing a retail in all honesty) whereas the Vanguard beta felt like an Alpha 1
I of all people wanted Vanguard to succeed...however there's just no excuse for it to be released in the state it was released in. Sigil needs to learn time management. Unfortunately it looks like they've dug themselves into their own grave by release this heap of shit. To think he's learned nothing from the EQ 1 days..shame.
I can never be free, because the shackles I wear can't be touched or be seen.

I was unfortunate enough to have wasted money on this one - my clan started playing it so I felt obliged to get it too, big mistake. This is one of the buggiest, laggiest, most boring pieces of crap I've ever played.
I liked the idea of a big seamless world, but the reality is barren and has more seams than Oblivion with the awful chunk loading. A few interesting ideas, the crafting for one seemed at first glance to be interesting and rewarding - the reality of that is frustration and tedium. Just really poor IMO.
Needless to say I barely made it into the third week of my trial before cancelling. And I am a very patient guy.

Yeah I got my horse earlier tonight and went riding around the country to see the sights a bit. The land seemed a bit incomplete because a lot of it was just empty space with no monsters or something else in it. I didn't have any problems with loading though. Maybe just a 1 second hiccup at most every now and again.
