i believe that is the psu fan controller, just plug it into one of the fan plugs on your motherboard, or you can just leave it unplugged all it does is let you monitor and control the psu fan speeds.

yeah thats the fan controller for the psu, I have a Antec smart power to. You don't need to worry abot it if you don't have a plug for it, it won't hurt anything not to use it.

It goes into either of those slots. I have the same PSU and near enough the same board (mines a 965p-S3 and a antec smart power 500w).

in my experience online manuals are always more detailed than the one's you get with the product. when I used my Antec psu the board I had at the time did not have an extra fan pin so I never used it and I had no problems.

You can plug it into the connector with four pins, I just looked at the online manual for your board and it shows that the plugs can be used with a three or four pin connector. If you do use it plug it into the plug by your ram slots.

I'm building a PC and as you can see its not going to well, So what I need to know is what the hell that 3pin cable coming out of the PSU is so I can figure out what I need it for

Oh man, I just LoL'd my ass off. You made a vid and titled it, "What the hell should I do with this? Haha, Thanks for the laugh.

Lol, What else could I say? Razz

Ok, I have the PC Posting, However the heatsink fan was NOT spinning, So I turned the PC off about 10secs later.

It looked like it was attempting to spin, However it seemed like it was jammed but its not. Whats the problem?

Common issue with SMART Fan, if the CPU is kinda low temperature, it knows it doesn't need the CPU fan to spin as it's cool enough so it won't spin, when it gets hotter it'll start to spin. This is what SMART fan does, such as my HSF goes from 500 RPM to 2500 RPM mostly, never had it cold enough to run without needing the heatsink's fan.

Check in the BIOS for SMART Fan (can't remember which section it's under, possibly Advanced BIOS Features), and it'll probably be set to "Auto", if so disable this to double check the fan on the CPU is functioning and then reboot the system and wait about 10 seconds to see if it starts spinning.

But shouldn't it spin from the go? I wasn't sure if it was safe to leave the PC on while the fan was not spinning... I will try what you've said first to see if the fan is actually working.

How do I get into the BIOS on award? Is it F8?

Seems to be working, 30-32C with both fans running at about 1000RPM.

Very Happy

Once I exited the BIOS I turned off the PC at the front and noticed that the two front lights where blinking and it was making a clicking sound.

I turned it off then plugged some extra parts into it. (PCI, SATA HD) and turned on the main power at the back.

Then..

Click click.. both lights on LED flashing. I'm not going to turn it on yet. Since it looks like something serious.

Remember this has nothing to do with the parts I've just added since It was doing this before I put those parts in.

what did you do in Bios , what part made this click sound ...

I viewed PC health in BIOS to check temps.

I exited the BIOS without saving changes pressed the off button on the front of the PC, Then i heard clicking coming from the PSU? (I think) then i seen both lights blinking on the LEDS.

The only way to get rid of this was to turn off the main power.

Then I added some more hardware.

Then I connected it again, powered on the main power (not the on button on front of PC) and I hear the clicking again.

I had to disable smartfan on my DS3 to get my Scyth Ninja's fan spinning. Your using software for your temps right? Don't trust the bios temps they aren't temperatures from a diode within the CPU. I was idling 20C from my bios temps but I grabbed TAT and Core Temp and they both read 30'ish C.

Right, After pulling everything out and starting most of it over again. It seems to be working now. I have no idea what was causing it not to boot.

Temps IDLE :

Motherboard 36 °C (97 °F)
CPU 30 °C (86 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #1 44 °C (111 °F)
CPU #1 / Core #2 44 °C (111 °F)
GPU 47 °C (117 °F)
Seagate ST3250620AS 39 °C (102 °F)

I don't understand the CPU Temps..

@KrAzY-KaMeL
What CPU are U running with that Ninja? and what temps do u get ?
I bought a Skythe Infinity (yes its HUGE!) and therefore wont fit on my mobo Sad
Was thinking about the Ninja...but just saw this new Zalman CNPS 9700 NT (it has the NV logo on it, me LIKE! Smile )

I am running a E6600.

Hey, Im using a E6300 @ 2.8Ghz. I also had trouble picking between the CNPS9700 and Ninja but I did some pros and cons in my head and came to a decision.

Zalman CNPS 9700
+Great cooling at full fan speed
+Great CPU socket clearance
+Does not require much space vertically
-Difficult installation (from what I hear)
-Loud at High Speed
-Gets outpaced by other HSF when set to lower fan speeds
-Expensive

Scythe Ninja
+Comes with a 120mm fan (Rev.B)
+Almost silent with stock fan (800rpm)
+Considerably light given its size
+Excellent cooling efficiency considering its noise level
+Cheap
-Fragile, Fins bend very very easy
-Has clearance issues with some motherboards
-Has clearance issues with some cases due to its vertical height

So I went with the Ninja and have been happy with it. I replaced the stock fan with a Yate Loon and at stock speed my Idle/Load temps are 30-32C/44-46C inside a P180. Either way both the Ninja and Zalman get beaten by a coupe of heatsinks most notably the Tuniq Tower which is now the King of the Hill.

The Ninja is known to beat the Infinity and I believe it ties the Zalman when its at low speed. The difference between all of the best well known coolers is like 2-6C so either way your getting a winner.

Cheers man, great review!
Ordered the Ninja now. I think I would have the same prob with the Tuniq as with the Infinity, both are just HUGE! and would never fit. I actually wrote about this on EVGA's forum.

You can see that the 680i board have some design flaws when it comes to the layout for that 8PIN socket, that is if you are planning to use any of these "enthusiast" heat sinks that is.
Did some rough estimations and I am pretty sure that the Ninja would not cover that socket as its a tad smaller then the Infinity. Crossing my fingers here Wink

Cox, thats a really nice motherboard you got there. Probably the best out now. I've heard about the horror stories with the 680i's and Heatsink clearance, I know that a Infinity is bigger then a Ninja but their bases is where the two differ i think, and i think your right that the Ninja leaves a smaller footprint.

I know right above the copper base it has that gigantic block that easily gets in the way of mounting and im guessing thats what getting obstructed by the power connector with the Infinity?

http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=431741

^That guy successfully mounted the Ninja on his 680i, looking at his pics thats one really really tight CPU socket area. From googling it looks like the only way you can run into trouble is if your using the older mounting style with the backplate then shaving above the socket is necessary but the rev.2 uses the push pin mounting method so you should be ok..............Hopefully! Very Happy

Cheers man, I am pretty confident now.
This is from that guys rig.

As you can see the 8PIN is just fine, clearing the heat sink with enough space for that connector.
As for the mounting, also read that you have to file down a bit on that X bracket, no problem Wink

Actually I think I hijacked this thread, but as KrAzY-KaMeL here gave me all the answers I looked for I will retire a happier man.
Again, thanks a bunch man.

You both ruined my thread Sad And thats one big ass heatsink. Very Happy

Anyhoo, I have another question now..

How do I get standby mode to work correctly? Because when I goto standby the PC shuts off yet the fan is still spinning. On my old PC it never done that. Why?

It might be the perspective, but it looks like the cooler blocks one of the ram-slots?
