found this a while ago...

Quote:
How to remove vista and get back to XP only (for DUAL BOOTS ONLY):

1) Format the Vista partition - this will delete vista (obviously)

2) Insert your windows XP disk - Press a key when it asks, and press R to go to the recovery console.

3) Enter your admin password. For XP Pro, type the password you used during setup, for XP home, there is no default password (so just hit enter)

4) Type FIXBOOT and then hit enter

5) Type FIXMBR and then hit enter

**you may have to press Y to say yes before these**

Eject the XP disk and reboot your computer. Vista is now gone, and your original XP bootloader has been reinstalled
Maybe this should be prominant on the vista forum, because ive got a feeling this is going to be asked a fair few times over the next few weeks

The Easyest way to do this is to download VistabootPRO and install using xp, it has an option to delete Vista bootloader.

It may work, but he will take longer, i would go for their tip at the end of their method, but use EasyBCD instead of VistaBootPro (outdated). I also always tried to avoid any FIXBOOT & FIXMBR, by experience they can easily screw you. Wink

Well i've played enough with vista and want to uninstall it (until a proper crack)... I installed it on a seperate hard disk so i know i need to format that hard disk. The thing i dont know is how to edit the boot file so it won't have the vista boot-up screen rather than the xp one. Anyone have any ideas and can point me in the right direction?

Thanks Smile

Wrong mate, if you want to get ride of the Vista boot you have to disable the windows boot manager of Vista not to edit the boot.ini of XP. Smile

cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boot_Configuration_Data

Leave boot.ini alone Bilal, the easiest way is to use one of the app quoted above, log on Windows XP, run EasyBCD ( http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 ), go to "Manage BootLoader" > "Uninstall the Vista Bootloader (use to restore XP)" > "Write MBR" > reboot.

I dunno how you have taken back the boot.ini priority from the windows boot manager installed with Vista (which take priority in the boot process), without editing the BCD or the MBR. Are you sure you have removed the windows boot manager that came with Vista?? Strange, maybe we don't speak of the same thing or we don't have installed windows with the same setup and number of hard drives. Smile

Yeah.. Mr Fat & Bald, Steve Balmer said that this patch is to block the rc2 file swap trick.
It didnt say if it blocks KMS key too, but I'm not gonna try it out to see what happens.
Anyone with a vista in vmware, please try this patch and see what happens to KMS activation.
This patch will do nothing though unless the same code is included in every other patch ms releases, or if it's mandatory to install it in order to get other updates.

Do you remember what was your hard drive setup? (single hard drive/ hard drive with XP unplugged during install?) Everytime i installed Vista (beta1, beta2, RC1, RTM) on a second hard drive the boot.ini from XP on C: remained untouched, becoming useless, and only the Vista's Windows Boot Manager was displayed during the dual-boot process.

Nevermind, Bilal will tell us what worked for him... Smile

Really a bad news. We'll have to disable windows update. It's not a so huge problem after all.

Launch Vista setup from within XP, install it on your second partition and you will have a dual-boot that will let you choose which OS you want to launch, then use EasyBCD to tweak the boot process.

It worked fine.

Now another question.. Is there a way to make Mcafee work on Vista? It messed up all when i installed it. Are there alternative antivirus+firewall working on Vista?.

Last one: In other to play directx9 games do i have to install dx9? Neverwinter Nights 2 did not start because it needed a dx9 dll. I tought that dx10 emulated dx9.

For testing purpose i had to install directx9 in order to play some games. Avast antivirus works on Vista, otherwise below is a list (maybe outdated) of applications and games working or not with Vista RTM.

The installation of dx9 creates any problem?

From the list it seems that the Mcafee antivirus should work.

Dunno, i won't call it neither safe or reliable, i just let the games install the required files, from their bundled directx setup, in order to get them loaded. Smile

Also McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.5i is the Vista compatible version.

Avast (free) home edition works with Vista Ultimate x64 without any problem so far.

Now let's say I want to use a business licence file over my ultimate copy (I don't care about extras) and use vmware and melindagates KMS server to activate.... my guess is connexion on vmware won't work? I'm screwed?

Had 2 days left on thursday on my ultimate version and finally decided to remove it from pc (Thank God nothing went wrong and my xp still loaded fine Very Happy). I'm gonna be patient now and wait for a fully cracked release to emerge. It may take some time but i don't believe that it will be uncrackable, nothing ever is, its always a matter of time Smile

Today AVG stopped to work without any reason. When i boot my pc it gives me a kernel error. If i start AVG manually then it works it's really annoying. I have tried Avast 4 but i do not think it works fine. There is no icon on the bar saying that the real-time scanning is avaible and also nothing running on task manager.

I give up to use Vista. See you in February 2007 stupid bugged OS.

UPDATE: Symantec Corporate 10.2 works fine.

vista is fuckin awesome, dont diss.
i dont run any AV on vista, win defender and firewall work great.. tbh I dont see the point of AV right now for vista, its new security measures prevent most worms, trojans and viruses from messing with system settings and files anyway.
my comps been running on vista enterprise now for 4 days straight, its rock solid and runs quickly and efficiently without any need for the odd reboot, unlike XP which would slow down to a slug after closing and opening programs consistantly for a couple of days.
and guess what?
ive got a pathetic (for vista) 512ram and 2800+. SATA HDD solves most speed probs tho Smile
aero works great on my 128meg 9600SE.. i can play the odd game of HL2, doom (classic Very Happy) and quake3 and all the old skool dosbox and genesis games im hooked to. MediaPortal runs better and more stabler than on XP (maybe due to .NET framework 3).
so far my only qualm is Volume Licensing 2.0, although 180days license is more than adequate, I format every 2 months.
And it installed in 20minutes.

Vista ownz!
