I was considering googling for answers but I think I'd get better results comming from real time posts and thoughts.

I used a CRT for years before I finally got my LCD (quite awile ago) I quickly noticed a better clarity and loved it. I thought my mom would too since I figured LCD's were for everyone. Well she thought the CRT was alot more clear than the LCD. Well the reason for this topic is im on my moms comptuer right now using a CRT and my eyes are aching like shit just trying to stare at this fuckin screen. I just asked a couple other people their opinions and one that didnt wear glasses thought the same as me, lcd's easier to see, but the gal that wears glasses thinks crt's are easier and lcd's hurt her eyes.

So the question is, what do you who wear/dont wear glasses think?

I wear glasses and I dont mind either, I would take an LCD over CRT because of the size and weight issue, but what I've always wondered is how much radiation is emmitted from that CRT moniter.

I cant really comment about image quality because I've never owned a LCD but from what I've seen it looks the same.

well, kinda away from the question, it was more if do you wear glasses do you find LCD's to be a bit more blurry than a CRT or vice versa.

Lots of people have their CRT's setup incorrectly. On nforce though I doubt this is an issue since we're all nerds. CRT is still better picture quality than LCD. That's why high end video editing is done on CRT's as is CAD. None of the issues with LCD.

For staring at a screen all day though, nothing is better than an LCD. Doesn't strain your eyes at all.

I have CRT on my desktop and LCD on my laptop...both are exactly the same resolutions, I don't wear glasses, and they definately have different picture, and it might look like better picture on LCD at first, but I just turned on two same programs and LCD has way too many jaggy edges(both monitors are same size), compared to CRT.

CRT gives better image but LCD is nicer to your eyes. I see difference but it aint so big that it really matters for me.

I just use my CRT when developing images with Adobe, due to the much higher resolution I can get on my CRT compared to my LCD. All in all though, I prefer my LCD; easier on the eyes, widescreen, easier to move/carry and I don't have to sit so close to it as I do with my CRT because of it's size.

Change the refresh rate and it will make the CRT much easier on the eyes. Default is 60hz but even 70hz is much better.

Optimal refresh rate depends a bit on where you live. If you use artificial light like a light bulb or tl, the flickering of those light sources will interfere with the refresh rate of the screen. So in Europe where the net uses 50 Hz, optimal is 75 or 100 Hz refresh rate. In the US it's 60 Hz.

Perhaps I'm just not educated in the area, but how the hell can a light bulb interfere with my screens refresh rate?

the refresh rate is what makes your eyes hurt with CRT's ,
60hz = eye strain , 80hz is good enough for most people but 100hz = pretty much perfect for me.
my crt monitor does 120hz though

Ehh, sorry i left out some info. Both light bulb and screen don't produce light continuously. That is not that problematic because the human mind can't identify much more than 20? (i don't know the exact amount and maybe it differs from person to person) pictures/frames per second. That's why the movies are shot with 24 fps. Most theatres project with 48 fps these days, it gives a steadier picture. But if these light sources work with different refresh rates you can see some flickering.

I would say LCD is better, apart some the blacks which are way better with CRT's...

so if you play doom3 all day long: CRT

Anything else: LCD

I'm still very happy with my 7 years old Vision Master Pro 450 CRT. Maybe it is also a bit of preference but if i walk in a showroom of some electronics consumer store and look at a wall of different flat-panels showing the same video i notice that all are showing different pictures. Huge variations in colours, luminescence and contrast. Most pictures are just plain ugly. My CRT is still sharp and produces vivid colours. My experience with LCDs they produce an image that is just to sharp (probably cheaper models). I think i rather stick with my CRT until i have to move again that is. Reminds me of the old days lan parties, loading up cars with huge and heavy carton boxes Neutral

human eye can see >24fps. Film's in cinema are jaggy, if you watched sport in 24fps versus 50fps you'd notice the smoothness straight away. That's why alot of caps out there aren't smooth, poor deinterlacing which removes frames.

Well you are right but there is a difference between capable of identifying single frames and seeing that a picture isn't smooth. Modern theatres project films with 48 fps, each frame gets projected twice. This gives a steadier picture but not more smoothness. Analogue TV PAL uses 25 fps but each frame gets separated into two interlaced fields, this gives more smoothness until you record it digitally. Smile
Conversion from film 24 fps to TV 25 fps is done by just accelerating the picture. The soundtrack will get a higher pitch by this unless a conversion is being used that accelerates the track and lowers the pitch. This often generates unwanted noise, good example is one of the LOTR movies. Ok this interests none. i should shut up. Very Happy

PAL uses 25fps, however 50 fields a sec (A and B). A and B aren't always duplicates of each other, when encoders use simple methods to deinterlace they dont preserve the fields. When deinterlacing is done correctly it's going to come out at 50fps or 60 for NTSC. You *always* notice this during the end credits of an xvid, they're jerky as hell. Also in sports caps.

I use a CRT for my main computer (gaming, surfing) and a LCD for my movie-computer.

This might sound a bit.. strange, but i only use the LCD to view movies when im actually playing games on the CRT. Doing 6 hour raids in WOW gets a bit tiresome without having some southpark season running on the LCD Smile

When i just want to watch movies/series though, i just use my hdtv for the big <3

But overall i find the CRT alot clearer and not as.. hm, pixelated (a bad choice of word but i dont know how to explain it) as the LCD.

First i wear glasses.

I find my LCDs screens that i use in my office to have better clarity and picture than any CRT i have used. And i used to be a big CRT fanboy. Looking at seismic used to be un heard of on a LCD since CRT are supposed to have a better picture, etc.

I will put my 2 Samsung SyncMaster 244T up against any CRT for viewing sciemic data.
(Note, these are quite highend LCDs)
But for gaming, ill still use my CRTs.
