Okay I'm watching Beyond River Cottage, a cookery program. Anyway something I've always wondered is when fishermen put lobster baskets and whelk baskets and stuff. How come other people don't come and empty them before the owner gets a chance.

I've always wondered that. Yes I need to get a life Smile

Breaking into peoples homes is wrong, rape is wrong. Even mugging old women is wrong. Yet no one empties fishermens baskets. Weird that.

Maybe because by taking someones fish they actually don't get that amount of money (By selling it) as if breaking into someones house and stealing their stuff (Tv, dvd-player ..) ..and maybe they don't get horny by stealing the fish (as sickos doing raping). I don't know Razz

...and it does happen. Maybe not something that ends up in the newspaper and so on Very Happy
I know some friends who did that a summer some years ago.

We don't have lobster here, but we have crab and prawn traps all over the place.

I personally don’t touch other people crab traps altho I am tempted. I touched someone's crab float and I chickened out. I am afraid that they are watching on shore or something. That is considered really rude. You are out in the open too and if the commercial guys do see you stealing, plus they have friends out there watching, and radios, and fast boats, I think it would cause a serious altercation and there are no police to break up fights.

Those commercial guys, that's their lively hood. So I think it is a respect thing.

But it does happen. I know a guy who has a dredging business. He digs out the ground to make moorage for boats. He has raided traps before. He takes maybe 10 crab or so big ones for his personal eating. So ya sometimes it happens.

I know a few times my rec. trap has been raided in Howe Sound by picnic people. I think I knew what family did it because they were eating them. Sad

I go to private docks now and crab where you really are not allowed to. It is because of boat traffic, ropes caught in the props. Tones of crab there because of it. I tie it to the dock and pull it up when no one is looking. Even if people there saw they wouldn’t say anything.

You would have to be a theif with a boat (boats cost money). Big enough to hold crab/lobster if you wanted to make serious money off raiding traps. Your boat would get a rep. People talk, especially at docks. I think you would arrive one morning to a underwater boat.
