I am finally getting ready to buy a new cpu (mine is a P4 1.2...568 megs...ati x800)
I want to be able to play games and get a cpu that will last for another 3 years.
I need some ideas on specs.
My $ range is up to $3G.
What would you guys recommend for cpu? what about hard drive space? Video card? processor?
Also...I am going to get a flat screen/DLP for a monitor (it will also act as a cable TV).
What kind of TV's should I look for? I am probably thinking around 42 inches....my room is not that big.
I also want to be able to hook the cpu up to the TV and watch TV, record stuff...watch DVDs...all the new high tech stuff.
My wife is finally on board so I want to act soon.
One last question: is there anyway to transfer some of the programs I have on my cpu now? I really don't want to lose everything and start again.

You can backup your programs (on cd, dvd, or just transfer them directly from the old one to the new thru lan, or also you could remove the harddisk from the old and put it in the new computer).
IMO the best cpu (processor) now is the Intel Core 2 Duo (Conroe). Are you going to build the computer yourself? In that case you would have to buy a compatible motherboard, memory (1Gb is enough, but 2Gb is better), PSU...
Hard drive space? The more the better.
Graphics card? You should go for a DX10 card, the new Nvidia 8800's just came out.

Which company would you suggest? Been reading about the new Dell, Alienware, Falcon...too many choices.
If you could give me some specs...I need a good roadmap to work from when customizing it.

Well since your spending up to $3000 then id suggest something in the line of:
Motherboard of your choice
600W+ PSU of your choice
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+
2048MB DDR2 PC6400 memory
GeForce 8800GTX
10,000RPM Sata-drive
X-Fi soundcard
Thats a pretty solid base that should last you around 3 years or so, some components ever longer.

Sure seems fine but... Intel is the way to go. The new core duo kicks AMD so fucking easy, seriously
Personally i wouldnt buy the 10,000RPM sata because the gb/$ ratio is pure shit. go with some bigger and a bit slower discs instead
X-Fi in all honour but it shouldnt be your first priority, imho the sound from any regular motherboard is sufficient if your not too fuzzy about the sound
