Interesting read here

thought the 'running on a gamecube' E3 rumours were false but it seems theres probably more truth to it than I thought. Diaapointing really, thought they packed a punch, maybe not a 360 or ps3 punch but I'd expect more than an "Overclocked gamecube with a dvd drive"

In my opinion cpu power and Wii isn't an issue. Just as with the DS.
What is more concerning is how well received the new controller will be..

It's as simple as this:

Wii = consol version of DS
PS3 = consol version of PSP

now what device do you enjoy the most today?

all these spec wars really suck, who cares about that, the games look good enough and the wii has other aspects that make up for the less powerful hardware.

I thought Glock is an austrian gun manufacturer Wink

More to the point.... I think Nintendo put all their money on the new controllers, i don't think they wanted to rival Sony or Microsoft in terms of cpu speed or graphics. And i think they are right because to me Nintendo was and always will be a console maker for kids, all their games are mostly aimed at a younger audience, and they have a strong market in Japan as i get it. Kids and Japanese folks Wink might love the new controllers, but for my age and my liking they are rather silly Smile

Has anyone actually tried these new controllers??? For all you know the new Swing your arms everywhere pads could be quite annoying if you dont have enough space or, want to lay down and play etc...

Anyway, Think I will be going for the PS3 or a Xbox360 when they drop in price mainly because of the games being aimed at older people eg GTA etc.... Mario is still fun but I have a N64 for that Smile

I saw play.com are doing a sale already on Wii games, the majority of titles look to be £32.99 this includes Zelda and Red Steel.

Thought I'd point it out incase anyone misses it. Wink

but why is the console itself so expensive? its more than the x0 core.

also heard some being critical to the wii contollers. that it changes depending on how close/far you are from the tv, and that the reaction time is a bit slow.

dont know if this is true yet of course. soon its out and we will know more.

Technical bullet points aside, the Broadway may be a supercharged Gekko... but its the ATI graphics core that puts it above Gamecube, Xbox and PS2.

Like others have mentioned... F*** Graphics. Give me INNOVATION!!! GIVE ME GAMEPLAY!!!!!

I can only presume because MS have always sold their consoles at a significant loss knowing that they recoup profits from Live subscriptions and game sales?

I still think the price is excellent to be honest, im sure I paid almost as much for my N64 which is obviously 2 gens prior to Wii - can't argue with that. Razz

really? i kind of remember it being cheaper. might be wrong though.

i also thought nintendo sold their consoles at a loss. i mean, werent they the ones inventing the whole idea in the first place, when they introduced the nes-system?

Its going back a while now but I googled and saw that enough people referenced the N64 as costing £250 at launch to believe that im right, this is the UK launch im talking about..... remember we get screwed on everything - I remember there were 2 majorprice drops to attempt to compete with Sony's machine as was the case with the Cube.

Not sure about the Nes its too far back, I owned the R.O.B. pack but my mother bought it for me so my memory is patchy when it comes to the pricing - the games sure as hell weren't cheap although I can't remember the price of the console I can remember paying £20-25 for Super Mario Bros and the same for a Wrestlemania game also remember around that time they were being investigated for price fixing. This is back when they were a really dirty company of course, when they were doing some of the same things that Sony are trying to do now.

Its a subjective thing I guess, I find current pricing on all the next gen consoles very reasonable - nobodys right or wrong though. For me the how much would it cost to put together a PC with comparitive specs arguement is always easy to fall back on when I splash out money on a console. Smile

It is as simple as this: if there is great games for the system it will dominate just like the DS has. Nobody(that matters, ie the mainstream consumer) pays for a gaming system's hardware, just like the lackluster sales of the PSP demonstrate. Everyone thought the DS was a gimmick and underpowered joke when it first arrived too. And now who wouldn't kill to be the one who thought that joke system up?

As far as Nintendo always being for kids and silly, well isn't that a response to gaming in general? I mean if you take that approach to a thing, then why play games at all? There will always be people who say it is a childish activity and a waste of time. In that case I don't really think there would be any difference in reaction to a gamer sitting dormant in a couch for 2-3 hrs holding a gamepad and staring vacantly into a tv as opposed to a gamer waving around a different-shaped controller. Except maybe, just maybe, in the latter case there might be some interest since it wouldn't resemble video gaming in the traditional sense.

Anyways I guess I just don't "get" the older gamer thing. I am nearly 30 and to tell the truth, all these games with flashy graphics, bouncing virtual boobs, and same old run 'n gun gameplay are boring me to death. If that is what an 'adult' game should be like, count me out. I'd much rather play something fun.

N64 and Gamecube have always had a minority share of the market. I expect it will be the same with the Wii.

Theres about as much chance of the Wii 'dominating' as there is of Sega getting back in the console war.

Great reply upstart_69, I'm with you all the way. I always thought that people who call an xbox or ps2 a more "mature" console sound rather silly.

That's not what is coming from countless industry insiders' mouthes about the system, do you know more than them perhaps? Besides you missed my point completely, not surprisingly. My point was, it is futile speculating how well a console will do based on hardware specs. Only hardcore gamers dwell on specs. It is the breadth and quality of games produced over the console's lifespan that will determine its success. So if there are great games(especially by 3rd parties) it will do well. If not, it will do poorly. I am not a psychic so I won't predict whether 3rd parties will keep up with the system or not, however from the launch it looks very positive.

And in this case if Nintendo even regains a small chunk of market share from the giants, the company will in fact be 'dominating.' The other companies are putting so much resources on the line they cannot afford to lose any. They are in a much bigger gamble with their high priced systems than Nintendo is. Afterall, last generation Nintendo was a close second in profits from the home system, even coming in dead last in system sales. Not too shabby for being the 'loser' eh?

Just to correct the thread title - the system doesnt have a dvd player.

Also if you've ever seen comparison shots, the system is not an overclocked GC.

1.) Regarding controller issues: Wired, IGN, and many others have pointed out that it was quite comfortable to play 10 hours of Zelda with it. In fact, Wired pointed out that it was MORE comfortable, as you don't need to have your arms stuck in front on the controller, you can have your left hand relaxing (while still controlling perfectly) and right hand on your leg.

2.) Regarding Power: Reduced cost of system. Reduced power drain (More cost). Graphics are at the point where there won't be a huge difference for MOST people. Consoles have done fine against PC's which have been extraordinarilly more powerful, more so than the difference between Wii and PS3 for ages... Not many people have an HD. Of those, there aren't a huge amount of gamers. Smaller market. Insert many other arguments here... Ultimately, if you NEED the best graphics, DONT GET A WII. I sincerely DOUBT you will have an iota of an impact on Nintendo's success or failure.

3.) Regarding Player Ages: I think saying Nintendo is going for kids is a HUGE mistake. Yes, Kids will be a big market... But how about women? Married men who sort of enjoy games but don't have the time or money to justify paying the 600$ for a system, 2000$+ for a decent HDTV, etc.. I have heard many women excited to play the new Wii, including my fiance who wanted me to preorder it. Her last console? An NES. I think Nintendo could do huge things in getting non-gamers into the fray, and I am quite excited about it.

Personally...

If I had unlimited funds and time, I would buy them all.

Seeing that I don't have an HDTV, or a shitload of money to spend on a hobby, the Wii is perfect for me. The fact that my fiance will help pay and play it with me is even better!

Lastly. To any graphics whores. Shut the FUCK up. You are the same dipshits arguing that your shitty ass consoles were fine despite their shitty ass power compared to a computer. You define hypocritical.

I just got a DS too. I gotta say... I honestly havent had as much fun with these so-called "next-gen" games we all pay 50 or even 60 dollars for as I have with 15 or even 20 dollar DS titles. Having played the DS finally I am looking forward to the Wii more than ever.

I have one of these on the way too. ;D

I agree with you 100%. For me, the DS and the Wii are the real start of next-gen gaming.

On a side note... for some cheap/fun DS titles. (or those of you that have alternative methods Wink )... try

Trauma Center (surgery has never been so much fun)
Big Brain Academy (for something short and sweet that will actually IMPROVE your brain)
Meteos (Puzzle game from the creator of Luminies)
Brain Age (yet more critical thinking tests, with Sudoku built in!)

And several several others. These titles Ive mentioned however, can be picked up for as little as $10-15. I cannot stress enough the cost vs fun factor of some of these titles.

Too long to pre-order. Personally, I plan to stop by every target, best buy, toys'r'us, walmart, and circuit city on midnight/sunday morning to try to snatch one up, though. I figure the chances of finding one are decent enough.
