gonna try it this weekend...
gonna try the 64bit version.
gonna try some few games (there is a "patch" that allows the run of certain dx9 games)
gonna post the result of this experiment on sunday xD

actually, they are stored in the Universidad de Chile, server... don't know wherever else are to find them but im sure they are links. (private account there).
and don't know if they, actually work... but, nothing to loose...
gonna try to find another link to them...
and is not in the release... its opened programed, with NO warrantys that may actually works. but... what the heck? is worth a try!!

Well there's wine (even though it isnt supposed to work on ubuntu 64), and probably some other emulators out there too... But for me linux is just a "week day" OS (and the best one for that - work, internet, writing, downloading, burning ...) and not for games.

By the way, ubuntu 6.10 64 is working great here, after a period where I couldn't use it (earlier versions of edgy didn't work with many core 2 duo motherboards, but its all fixed now).

Either, there is very little difference.. in fact you can use Gnome (ubuntu's default window manager) on kubuntu and vice versa.. I would suggest installing ubuntu, then KDE and trying out both window managers to see which works for you.. then maybe consider a reinstall..

If your used to windows Kubuntu, if your used to mac's and osx Ubuntu.
KDE = most like Explorer
GNOME = most like osX

warning!
Ubuntu's 6.06 Grub bootloadeer is fucked if you dual boot winxp and Ubuntu.
You boot into windows and on a restart Grub errors out Fixmbr is usefull but you'll loose Ubuntu.
I know this problem is with Ubuntu 6.06 but its a fully updated 6.06 so maybe has the same Grub that 6.10 comes with

Grub worked out of the box here, no need to mess with fixmbr or fixboot in winxp. And I got dualboot, obviously.

no problem for me, Brasil-Brush.
anyway installed ubuntu amd64, and its wonderfull. kept me busy all weekend long, but is running decently well now...
problem with games is that, well, it is a x64 install... so, trying to figure out what's up with them... everything else works as it should.
but, if you like to play games, have a nice winamp and and and-... that's it... stay in Windows. for everything else, linux... FAST AS A TOMAHAWK!!!

The only thing you may have issues with is outputting to tv, not sure if the ATI linux drivers support it well, but I'm sure there will be a fix. The thing about linux is that you need to put that little bit extra effort in, but if you do, you will probably find a solution for any situation.

Its easy as pie, no need for a guide to install.. when it comes to getting it working fully.. then you will need a guide lol.
Last time I installed it was just a live CD, you double click an install icon and it does the rest for you.. including finding windows and adding it to the boot loader..

Firefox seems to run better under Gnome/Linux than it does on windows - never had it use 100% cpu like it does under XP
klibido is great for usenet, its a bit like a tabbed grabit - you can have multiple groups open at once plus view pics/nfo's.
Quickpar runs well under wine and so did rar but Gnome's got its own app to deal with split archives.

ATI driver can be pain in the ass to get working properly for the first time. Ubuntu forums are your friend, copy paste instruction for allmost every problem.
And as for the newsreader or leecher in this case, I warmly suggest Hellanzb.
It Pars, rars automatically and and only loads the pars if needed.
For gaming there is a program called Cedega, it may work with some newer games, but it's still not solution for playing all windows games. I've heard that it works better with nvidia card thou, dunno.
OpenGL games, atleast what i've tried ,pretty much every game work. Doom3 even faster than in windows.
Ubuntu boots fast and when windows has only games installed it loads pretty fast too so I don't mind booting once in awhile for a game session. Everything else happens in Linux in my house.

Great info, didn't know about klibido or running quickpar in wine, going to make my future transition easier  .. I wish they would release a linux version of grabit though, I love the search feature.. |
There is something like it I believe hellnzb, i've never used grabit though only heard it mentioned in this context.
Remember to only transition if you want to my workbox is strictly Linux and playbox is wintendo, though I suspect i'll get rid of the few windows games I use when I get the Wii, the games I'll want to play on the pc in the future will be running either natively or in crossover.
I will most 'definitely' never use vista at home. |

Beryl 0.1.2 is out, you need to add the unofficial beryl repos but the upgrade works and runs a little better.. Still pretty buggy though (at least if your running in TwinView..)..

By the way, let me say that K3b is the best cd burner app I ever used, aMSN works well for instant msgs(IMO its even better than MSN-Messenger, cuz its much lighter), and the synaptic system update thing is better than windowsupdate. But when it comes to music, I have yet to find a decent mp3 player (bmpx is/was not working well on ubuntu64, xmms is too old -works, but i dont like it-...).
Also, if you're using ubuntu64, you may want to install Firefox32 (there are easy tutorials for that) 'cause Java and Flash dont work on FF64.
