This problem happens because at some point you had a program installed on your computer that changes the Windows file extension reserved for Microsoft's Windows Installer program (.MSP / .MSI) to point to itself instead of where it should point. This will cause any program using Microsoft's standard Windows Patch function to generate an error. If you are getting an .MSP/.MSI error on update, it's easy to change this setting back to the correct value. Open Microsoft's RegEdit program by going to the Windows Start Menu and selecting Run. Then type RegEdit and press Enter. This will open the RegEdit program. Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT find the .msp folder and open it. Then double click on the file contained inside and change the data field to read "Msi.Patch" (without the quotes). Close RegEdit and double click on the patch to run it again. Now all software patches using Microsoft's standard Windows Patch function will work again on your computer.
