This game is awesome... you have to spend some time, but then it's really great. You need of cause a wheel.

On my PC 2600+, 1 GB, Rad 9700 Pro it runs really flawless in 1024x768. Everything on high.

Well, the game was freezing on the create a profile screen. I did some toubleshooting and found out that it doesn't freeze with the graphics quality turn to low. You can turn everything else on though or atleast I could. I don't get anymore freezes which is good. Eventhough I would like to have the graphics quality tunred to high, but oh well. Hope this helps anyone that's been having freezing problems.

Had the same freezing problem as you eliteccs. Did not try to turn down the graphics to low. Did not buy an X800XT to play stuff on low quality. Uninstalled, gone.....

i turned everything down to low and eax off and this did help some. now i
was able to do the basic driving school and some of the advanced lessons
before it locked my pc. is there any difference between the releases? i
have the dvd-reloaded one and i'm wondering if it is maybe the release and
not my computer. there is nothing worse than having your pc lock up with
only a scratchy aweful noise repeating from the sound card. i swear it makes
me want to fucking break shit. i can't imagine how pissed off i would get if i
actually paid money for this game. haha..... shitty game makers should be
happy i use the warez... it keeps me from showing up at their office and
making them play with a piece of my shit..... like i just did with their shit
'game' .

I play it at 1024x768 with everything tunred up, but the graphics quality and it runs great. Only reason I set graphics quality to low is, cause it freezes if I don't. My specs isn't exactly great either.

1.2Ghz Celeron
Radeon 9600 Pro
512MB SDRam PC133

Great game also. I'm really loving it. Only thing I can't stand is the fact that you must pass the training to play the normal campaign part of the game. Other then that I love it. The physics is alsome.

Here's a miniminireview, sim freaks will LOVE it, those who think CMR (3,4,5) are great games, will probably hate it. Not to mention people who think CMR games are realistic.. they will probably say RBR is the worst rally game of all time because they can't handle the cars in RBR.

In any case, a wheel is highly recommended.

I will get it then : )=....I hated the CMR 3 4 5 ping pong games

the 4 players multiplayer mode is only on 1 computer, no LAN mode, and that's the reason I didn't and won't download this game. What's the point of a rally game if there's no LAN multi ? (except for fans)

have u tried playing cmr 4 online??... i bet you every game you join and the race starts.. at least 2 to 4 ppl will leave in between.... especially on the online championships where w're at the 3th stage and we have 2 ppl left.. really lame....

rbr wants to be a sim.. they don't want to see ghost cars running around the narrow tracks.....

Problem is most likely going to be software, hardware or driver related - although the game is I will concede quite unoptimised in places.

I find it runs acceptable at the highest detail settings on my 2ghz, 512mb, 128mb Gf4Ti but I turn general detail to low and dynamic car reflections off and switch everything else on for a more consistently smooth and enjoyable ride. I don't notice a significant difference in the sense that it still looks great and I'm not feeling I miss anything.

I've experienced one or two crashes, most notably during a season race (grr Sad) and the sound effects seem to go belly up with regular effect - most often the co-driver talking like he's on speed - but other than that I'm doing good so I assume it's different fr everyone.

The game itself is great, at first it took some getting used to (and a bit of tweaking for my MOMO racing wheel) but I eventually got the hang of its style and completed basic training and the majority of advanced before I got bored and took to the season mode.

Driving is very rewarding as it's never boring, never the same and the tracks are just chock full of enviromental hazards - far and away from Colin McRae rally. Only the snow seems to be strangely un-interactive, there doesn't seem to be much resistence if at all from the bankings ?? but then there is already a mod out there that fixes this - it seems it's quite easy to get into the physics and code of the game which is nice Smile

When driving you really need to watch your speed and maintain focus, and being aggressive for the sake of being aggressive will get you no where, just because your on a straight stretch and you see a small dink in the road doesn't mean you can ignore it - otherwise you'll put a kink in your rythm and trip up somewhere further down. You have to be more careful and attack fluently all over the track.

The physics are a mixed bag though as I find collisions can either be satisfying or in the case of rolls either too easy and/or too fast - it literally flies!

I'd really love to have a clutch, handbrake and gear-shifter though as they all seem to be fully supporte and would add even greater levels of interaction when driving!

My biggest beef is the sound, apart from I' like more enviromental ambience which either my card isn't pumping out right or just doesn't exist to a good degree (wind, birds, water, crowds... etc), but mostly it's the way it cracks and pops and screws up on me all the time, very annoying Sad

...needs mouse support in menus as well.

Other than that though the game is golden, a patch will hopefully sort things out.

BTW I really am going to treat a lot of people I've never seen on this forum before with some question marks as I've heard people in the console forum referring to the game as appauling and Colin McRae rally as much better... that's just silly talk!

Setting vertical sync to "always on" via a created RadLinker link fixed my stuttering problem. Framerate would pause every few seconds prior to that.

Game runs very well, maximum settings @ 1280x1024.

You can disable the intro movies and have a general fiddle about with settings via the RichardBurnsRally.ini file.

Good call, I'll check it out - you might want to rename .RBZ files to .ZIP files instead and have a peek inside of them, some are just plain text files in there that you can edit and tweak to your desires.

Just remember to back them up and rename the ZIP to RBZ.

...personally another thing that comes to mind is all the loading that occurs in season mode - you have to stop and start to get from location to location, it can, and invariably does become very tedious when you just want to get into the thick of things.

Oh and have I mentioned the lack of mouse support? So fustrating when you are trying to make your own setups Sad

Aye, the modding community surrounding the game is impressive, RBR is the gift that keeps on giving. It's from 2004 and still has the most satisfying physics engine of any rally title (Dirt Rally comes close to it, but doesn't quite surpass it in my opinion Razz), similarly to SBK 2001 - still the best motorbike sim, and ISI's F1 Challenge 99-02 back when EA didn't suck balls which had more accurate physics than anything the Codies have ever produced.

It's quite sad when one thinks about it though, technology has advanced a lot in terms of visual fidelity but when it comes to physics we're stuck in a limbo of inertia that's almost heading backwards.

Found this guide which is a nice a starting point, I never really managed to set everything up properly (the plugins were an absolute nightmare to install) but apparently there are new recent tools that make modding less cumbersome.

I was curious to see if the legendary papa RBR still holds up physics-wise in 2020 and reinstalled it with the many basic fixes required to run it properly. To no one's surprise, it absolutely does. The handling is still as satisfying as ever and every inch of the road must be approached carefully, even the smallest bump can trigger insane dio porco's Me Gusta

I grabbed the iso from myabandonware and just followed the procedure from: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Richard_Burns_Rally#Essential_improvements
(Patch 1.02 -> RBR FixUp Plugin for the widescreen -> XInput Plus for recognizing the gamepad's triggers -> increse the Curvature 1/2 inside Filter Settings since the default sensitivity is too high)

If you're on a crappy 360 pad like I am right now and the rumble doesn't work, install the new improved universal drivers which also fix many other titles such as ETS2, rFactor2, GTR 2 etc.: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=165238623
The graphics are obviously crude, but the inspired tracks' design and the attention to details are still remarkable. I've also put together a Reshade to give it a bit more life in case you want to try it: https://www.mediafire.com/file/bqcvmqxkpecfs9z/Richard_Burns_Rally_-_Reshade.rar/file

Screens pls
 Spoiler:

The vanilla game is just the first step though, there's also the new automatized RBRCIT tool for easily adding all the cars that support NGP physics 6, RBRCzLauncher with hundreds of tracks ( https://www.racedepartment.com/threads/btb-track-collection-improve-pacenote-for-czmappack.168126/ ), graphical packs and so on. The amount of additional contents that the community is still producing after all these years is simply ridiculous Very Happy
