|
 |
Quote: | Sony exec questions high price of Wii, 360 hardware
Consoles too expensive for intended audiences, says Oz boss
Sony Australia's Michael Ephraim has questioned the price point of rival next-gen hardware, stating the Wii is "a lot to fork out" for the intended family audience, while branding the Xbox 360 as "pricey".
Speaking to Australia's The Age newspaper, Ephraim also said he believes that the PAL delay of the PS3 will not impact sales in the long term.
"My only question for this Christmas on Wii is the price point," said Ephraim.
"Even though it's affordable, at AUD $400 (EUR 237) plus whatever you need to buy accessories-wise, I'm guessing you need to spend about AUD $500 (EUR 296) to take home a Wii and enjoy it."
"For this Christmas, I think that price point is still not family entertainment because AUD $500 is a lot to fork out, but we welcome the Nintendo heritage of gaming where they can appeal to a broader audience because long-term that is critical for the industry," he said.
And while admitting Microsoft had done "fairly well" at launch, the Australia boss believes the Xbox 360 is focused on too narrow an audience and still priced too high.
"I think their product offering is still not broad enough. The content is narrow and appeals only to a very core group," he said.
He added: "It's still pricey, and I'm sure Microsoft will do everything they can, but if you just look at the offerings from each format and the marketplace that we are now playing in, especially PlayStation 2, it has to be affordable because we are talking about mass-market and non traditional gamers."
Discussing the PlayStation 3, which will retail at AUD $830 (EUR 492) and AUD $999 (EUR 592) for the two sku's, Ephraim stated that the post-Christmas delay of PAL units was an initial disappointment, but retail had backed the move and was now looking forward to a clear sales window during the March launch.
"We would have loved to have launched for Christmas. But based on our discussions with retailers, they are very keen and excited about a March launch because it gives us a period to communicate with our customers that is not cluttered," he said.
"So in the long run, if you take a five-year or three or two-year view, it won't have any impact at all," added Ephraim. |

I read that a few days ago and laughed.
The Wii is overpriced. I'll give him that. That system should not be $249.99.
And the X360 is "NOT" overpriced at $299.99 for the Core. Thats actually a steal considering the power the system is capable of.
These sony guys are full of themselves.

Sony's just going downhill... From laptop bateries to PS3, everything they do seems to suck.

Dont forget Sony PSP is seriously lacking on games big time. Sometimes it feels as if they just gave up.

The only advantage the PS3 has over the 360 is the HDMI connection wich doesn't justify the higher price. And i'm sure Sony would have dropped the blue ray drive early on if they would have known what trouble it brings.

The Wii itself has a nice price, though I'm not so sure about the controllers...
The X360 is spot on in my opinion.
But until the PS3 can justify its price, I'm on the fence.. Online, Exclusives, Quality of hardware, Firmware, BluRay, controller?
To me the PS3 seems too similar to the PSP in many ways. I own a PSP and don't like it.
nah, we should all wait and see. Everyone is confused about next-gen it seems (including devs). There is no clear best choice at this point.

Actually, only Wii is innovative enough to be called nex-gen, so I say the price is just right.

I agree with you StarShine - though I think we'll se a much wider experience gap between the three consoles this gen.
Wii - Simpler, Fresh and Fun gameplay.
X360 - Best online, retro and action gaming.
PS3 - Best graphics/hardware (?) and bigger jap support (J-RPGs). - oh and TILT..

Yep, I don't even need to question the possibility that in 1-2 years time I'll own all three anyway - as I said to Nailbiter on another thread im still enjoying the current gen, in these times of graphics and style above gameplay and substance that speaks volumes, I think all 3 brands will continue to offer fresh and innovative games long after they've been substancially surpassed by PC's hardware. Graphics are also getting to the stage now where there so good unless your a complete graphics whore its going to be hard to complain thus the hardware/specs arguement in those lame PC vs Console threads is almost becoming irrelevant in favour of well designed, original games.
Wii is also going to be a contender for best retro btw im sure I saw that there planning on releasing the entire Nintendo back catalogue in a style similiar to Xbox Live arcade, its obviously already been done unofficially with the nes, snes, GBC and GBA emulators which are fantastic but none the less its a great idea.
