Has anyone ever tried to quit smoking, and succeeded in it?
I've been smoking for five years now, and I really want to quit. Quitting is for everybody different I guess, but all pointers are welcome...

(Not sure if this topic belongs in this section, but smoking truly is a bitch...)

Seeing my dad have a triple heart bypass did it for me!!! he smoked since he was 15, and had bypass at 56..

I believe you can only quit when you REALLY want to, it takes alot of willpower, don't give into the habit, i made it a personal fight between me and the smoking if you know what i mean! don't let it beat you...

Ohh and not going out with friends who smoke for a while, hard i know but the temptation when youv'e had a few drinks is tooo much sometimes Very Happy
I joined a gym when i gave up 10years ago and i still go to the same gym now, never had a siggy since Smile

Good luck Pal Razz

I know exactly what you mean, it does take a lot of willpower. Unfortunately, I lack a lot of that Smile.

I try to lessen the number of cigs I smoke every day, but that's not the way to go... After a couple of days smoking less you end up smoking more than before. The jo-jo effect also applies to those who wish to quit smoking I guess Very Happy. Cold turkey seems to be a good strategy, but the moutain is too high to climb at the moment.

Problem is I am quite a nervous guy. From time to time I have to give work presentations to a lot of people, it makes me nervous even a couple of weeks before the presentation. Luckily it has improved a bit over the one year I've been working now.

Don't buy packs anymore Smile it sounds silly but just don't carry a lot of money around anymore. you have to go buy the newspaper? just take enough money to buy the newspaper so you don't have any change left for a pack of cigarettes Smile

Some people have rubber rings around their wrists.

and everytime they think of smoking, they make it slap againt your wrist. after a while smoking will be associated with pain, and you won't feel that need anymore Smile

hope this helps

That's certainly something worth trying. Today I will carry around enough money to buy the newspaper and some rubber bands Smile.

If Pavlov's dogs can make associations, i should be able to do so either. Thx for the tip Smile.

I smoked from the age of 16 to 25. I tried several times to quit and eventually succeeded after making a new years resolution and actually sticking to it! 31st December 2004 was the last time I had a cigarette! I miss smoking since I quite enjoyed it but the bad points, money, health, smell, yellow nails! etc, make it something I dont regret. Smile

Dunno if u guys get them cancer ads on the tele where you are? the ones with the girl crying cos her dad has lung cancer? (true life - not actors) .. anyway my son saw that and came to my house in tears. cos he was convinced i was gonna die..

Fuck! that very same day i threw all my fags/ashtrays/lighters away. and gave up.. been 15 months now.. and although ive put weight on.. i feel a lot better..

I found the govt 'quit smoking' website a great help. im sure all countries have a similar thing.. anyway its basically tips and tricks and any medical help u can get..
but what really helped was reading up on other 'quitters' comments.. you realise you aint alone. that helped me a lot..

one thing dont give up its worth it in the end..

'giving up wont kill you, but cigarrettes might' remember that mate Smile

They've got them anti-smoking ads over here too. They seem to help for people who are younger than me and have never started smoking. There's a growing awareness that smoking is very bad for you, those ads are keeping the younger generation from ever starting and it seems to work.

Unfortunately, for people who already smoke these ads do nothing. Warning messages on cigarette packs also: nothing. Maybe if the ads were more "gory" I would think twice to light another cig...

Quit smoking websites have helped me to smoke less, they are indeed a great help. The more knowlegde one has on the subject of nicotine addiction, the more likely one will succesfully quit.

Here all the packs have warning labels on them. Dunno, I guess it helps a litte when you're thinking about lighting up and you have to look at something on the pack that basically says 'hey idiot, these will kill you!'

it doesnt have to be about willpower, depends on what method you go for.
NRT is just a money maker and still puts nicotine in the body and stopping dead can work for some but can be very hard.both need good willpower to succeed
its all the mind chaps.

i HIGHLY recommend allen carr's easy way, tried everything before this and failed, this book just works.(for me and millions of others anyway), no willpower no NRT no scare tactics
its amazing and ive recomended this a couple of heavy smokers that also tried various methods which resulted in failure, there now non-smokers

Wow those are pretty harsh! They should put them on cigarette packets over here too.

I quit smoking 4 years ago and I'm still very happy about it yes I have put on some weight but overall I feel much better. For me the first week of quiting was hard because of the physical addiction, the next few weeks it was the mental addiction that bugged me you those moments you're stressed, bored, empty handed, reading, surfing the net, drinking with friends etc. those are the hardest moments. Every time you want to light up a smoke try to do something else (just don't eat to much the moment you quit smoking as your metabolism slows down wich results in gaining weight Sad ) I wish you good luck with your effort to quit smoking.

what ever happened to good old will power? you dont need crutches like patches and disturbing images, or stories of other people having smoking related problems

you either have a reason to quit, or you want to keep smoking, its not that big of a deal. if you like smoking, keep on doing it. if you think its a shitty habbit, then thats all the motivation you should need.

My mother is dying because of a life of smoking. The problem is that she quit 10 years ago but her lungs continue to degrade to the point now she is on oxygen. Your lungs DO NOT repair themselves and continue to get worse.

Once she dies my dad will be lost without her and no doubt he will pass on very quickly too.

Smoking is for people who want to kill themselves and the people around them.

@ KnightRider2006:

I'm sorry to hear that about your mother. I'm quite sure lungs can repair themselves after quiting smoking, as long as they are not damaged too badly (i.e. you haven't smoked for decades on end). Quiting smoking results in a lot of coughing, you're coughing up dead cells destroyed by the tar and the poison you're inhaling. That should make place for new cells to grow...

Zyban is a type of anti depressent. You have to be really carefull with that shit. My girlfriend went on that and she was a mess. She was shaking so badly, and talking about sucide. I had to try 2 different doctors before I got her in. I slept on her couch that night. She had be on previous anti depressents so I KNOW they were still in her system along with the Zyban.

What are you taking if you don't mind me asking? PM me perhaps rather than putting out on here. I don't take anything.

I know you get stressed.

I always wondered. How do you get prescription for antidepressants or some other heavy meds? People often said I was on prozac or something. I want to at least try it.

You have to have a reason.
