Official web page: Neverwinter Nights 2

Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) is a computer role-playing game set in the fantasy world of the Forgotten Realms, one of the popular campaign settings of Dungeons and Dragons. It takes the player from the tiniest of villages into a sweeping tale of danger and war, chronicling their rise from a peasant to a full-fledged hero of the Realms, defending it against one of the greatest threats of the age.

Looks pretty enough, but let's face it: when was the last time a fantasy role-playing game was innovative? I'm hoping for some missions that involve something other than mindless hack 'n slash, but my guess is I'll be disappointed.

I think this one will turn out very good. They did a good job making NWN 1 and the expansion packs so I reckon this one will also be pretty in-depth and should be fun. Smile

He he. Well my experience with Baldurs Gate played at a Laptop in a hotel room at the Meridien on a 2 months buissnes trip to Turino, still brings back sweet sweet memories. It might sound wierd but its simply one of the best RPGs ever made...and that was only played in ISO perspective. The thing with all games from Obsidian has always been a good story with realy cool quests, so lets hope for the best.

I hear you, but I disagree. While the quests in Baldur's Gate and NWN might seem cool at first, they're really nothing more than "go to X, kill all the monsters, get item Y and bring it back to me". There are very few games that have gone beyond that. Fallout 2 comes to mind, where there were often several different ways of completing the quests, either through mindless violence or simply by talking to people.

ahhhh fallout 2, the whale that no one can master. there is so far no RPG that has even been close to beating that game, and after all it was made in 98(?) and still no one has so far even a slight chance of beating that game. the options the endless possibility's i mean that game was bloody perfect! or atleast very close to perfection.

I agree with Captain, BG is in my opinion one of the best RPG that ever came out. Fits right in with Fallout and Elder Scrolls. I think it had a big share of innovative quests. I remember for example the quest with the tanner making armor out of human skins, top notch quest. This game sounds promising, and I just hope it will be like the first. It's all I need.

Why? Bioware has nothing to do with it..

This will be good if they don't dumb shit down and make it like NWN1 only better. I.e. improved DM tools, better graphics, more content, etc
The basics of what it is can't be innovative. Its supposed to be a 3D DM tool for 3.5E that comes with a prebuilt campaign. If they mess that up, they don't deserve to be making games.

I expect this game to be something similar to what KoToR2 (developed by obsidian, was buggy and unfished, still pretty fun) was to KoToR1 (an amazing bioware game). Just don't get your hopes up too much Cool

Agree with Glottis there, KotOR was bugged like hell and unfinished.

And what's up with the almost 3rd-person screenshots? Give us the good old isometric view!

And it will never beat the BG-series. Bioware are one of the best around.

I'm hoping this game is just like NWN 1 Except for a few important things... This time with a more fleshed out storyline. I didn't think that an elven cleric telling you her life story was much to go on last time around, especially compared to the emotional and gripping stories in BG 1 and BG 2..or heck, even their expansion packs. I am hoping the SP campaign was just suffering because that team spent so much time adjusting the gameplay to 3d and this time around it will be better, since 3d has been around for awhile and all.. The MP aspect and tools and mods were great and all, but still, I don't think they made up for the empty feeling SP mode that shipped with the game.

Besides that I hope the companions this time around have something more to bring to the experience. The banter from the BG series was a great thing and it just perplexed me why they all but did away with it. Especially with your companions giving their opinions on story events, it made you care whether they lived or died. I remember in NWN not really giving a damn whether my companion died, actually they were good for buffering and not much else. Probably the poor scripting and AI helped with that, with the magic users always standing in the front of the battle and so on. Hopefully that has been addressed as well.

Anyways I enjoyed NWN 1 somewhat and am looking forward to this one, just hoping they deliver on more of the oldschool RPG goodness, and less hack'n'slash multiplayer-geared gameplay this time around.

Last I heard Atari is still floundering, and I think they only narrowly escaped going bankrupt this summer. I know they were in danger of being tossed off the stock market.

Good. Hopefully they give the AD&D liscence away to someone who won't churn out bug-infested and rushed games with absolutely no support. I seriously have no love whatsoever for atari. It's a miracle anything good gets published under them at all. Just as long as a competent company takes over support for nwn2(which shouldnt be a prob with such a popular title), would be good riddance.

Fuck me the game looks ugly. Bring back the lush, detailed 2D isometric games which really let you envisage the enviroments. 3D is far too generic and shittttttttt.

Agreed. I actually enjoyed IWD 2 much more than I ever did NWN 1. Most 3d rpgs just dont seem to have the art to make the environments seem alive and stuff. Same with adventure games. Guess that's why I'll always have a copy of the BGs and old adventure games installed. Too bad those just dont sell anymore...tis a shame.

Temple of Elemental Evil was where its at (with Co8 patch).

As far as atari giving away the license, it reverts to infogrames. So unless they go down too, it'll take awhile before hasboro wakes the fuck up.

I agree...I wish they would continue making games with the infinity engine. I still play IWD1&2 and baldur's gate with all the mods once in a while. it's just way better than that ugly neverwinter nights.

Multiplayer is where it's at with NWN, the single player IMO will never match up to the TES/Gothic series. Getting together with a few friends and playing a well made module in NWN though, is fantastic Smile also a much deeper and immersive multiplayer experience than most MMO's.

I'm not quite sure what to expect from NWN2, especially after what happend with Kotor2. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed Smile

Did you actually play the game with the final Co8 patch that restored all the content Atari forced troika to remove from the game? The Co8 guys are actually completely redoing everything in the game to do B2: The keep on the borderlands. Unless you waited months to apply the patch, I doubt it.

Can't see myself getting this until it's been out for a good 6 months. Sure, it's got a world map and heightmaps, but until it's got epic level and prestige class functionality NWN gold + PRC is going to piss all over it.

The toolset is just great. It is much "harder" than NWN1 toolset, but as for the power its for the better, much more options. Altough the interface is pretty craptastic..
The lighting effects are just amazing, can play around with the lights at nighttime forever!
The grass too, just amazing, can fill the entire screen with dense swaying grass, no slowdowns. And thats in the toolset, imagine ingame..

Also, one dude on the toolset forums actually tought that there was a graphical bug, because one dude he created had dark patches all over the face.. Wanna know what it was?
It was the fact that the light system and self-shadowing is WAY WAY more advanced than you first think, those dark patches were actually smooth shadows due to the characters exaggerated eyebrows and cheeks.... Yeah thats right.
Its the most beautiful self-shadowing effect ive EVER seen in a game, just playing around with moving the sun and you can see how the shadows in the face move, and its NOT blocky shadows, its NOT blurry, its completely sharp (but still smooth edges) shadows at the exact right places, it seems like every single pixel is shadowed just as it should be, no artifacts what so ever Surprised Surprised

Just, man, the detail on the faces and monsters is just amazing, the superb self-shadowing is really the extra "oompfh".
And it runs about a tiny bit better than Titan Quest does in terms of FPS in relations to resolution / characters on screen / grass on screen. Then im sure there will be some extra effects and crap that you can turn on ingame, but as of now it looks very promising and playable.

And the trees deserve mention too, due to the speedtree technology you get some really randomized sexy trees. And there are some truly huge trees availible, many are bigger than a dragon Surprised

Yeah so, alot of praise from me for the toolset and gfx. The gameplay is of course another deal which we wont know until we have played the full game for a while, but if the gameplay is at least like NWN1, i wont be dissapointed and this game deserves your cash Wink

Ispep or what your nick is, UGLY? And thats not even with the shadows from the fireplace enabled..
