Yeah, if you put the truly stylish retro-look aside this game is really dull.
Cool for 15 mins, but that's just because it looks so cool and has nice ambient music, the gameplay isnt interesting in 15 mins.

The game can get dull and I do think there isn't enough variety in what you can actually do IN the game (although there is a lot to tweak before you start - and that does affect gameplan - it isn't enough). But then I don't think this is a traditional game, I think this is something to play as a diversion. An alternative now and then. Not something you focus entirely on.
It can be fun in diplomacy mode I think, to play people off one another. I've been lucky in my first few matches that I've teamed up with the strongest and it does give you a buzz when you make the right choices
The interface and graphics are nothing short of brilliant as well. I'm loving the interface.
Sounds on the other hand are pretty non-existent for me. It seems all muted and nondescript. I'm not sure whether you're supposed to hear explosions or not, I don't seem to get anything distinguishable anyway??
All in all though it's a fun game in short spurts and as it's only a fraction of a regular game in cost there isn't much to complain about from me. I do hope they extend the games features though, that would take it to the next level from novelty to real strategy.

This game would make a nice screensaver. Definately. Other then that, it's about as fun as multplayer minesweeper. Good concept, poor execution unfortunately.

Poor execution as in, there is no pause to ponder your actions and the whole devolves into a click fest, very quickly. It's impossible to track everything even with just two players. The mouse controls aren't exactly the best, especially when it comes to setting your silos or airfields or carriers into different modes. And the whole game throws anything remotely resembling realism out the window. heh. What part of the game is executed well exactly?

The explosions are very quiet and usually takes alot of them to make any real noise.
But it is part of the atmosphere, that you are a general deep inside some underground bunker somewhere.

Click on advanced before starting the game and set lowest possible speed to pause, apparently your too lazy to look around a bit yourself before you criticize.

Excalibur, B, if you want a pause to ponder your actions, why not choose any of the 3 lower speed settings huh?
Even at 10x speed, which is the second fastest, a sub takes a good 5 minutes AT LEAST to cross the pacific ocean. And any player (giving that the host has the default settings) can change to a lower speed at any time and the rest of the players will have to deal with it.
Not to mention the lowest speed, Real Time (if you dont count PAUSE...), where it takes 160 seconds just for 1 bomber to launch from the airfield, and a good 20 minutes for it to reach its target.
Seriously, this is THE slowest game ive ever played if played in Real Time and not counting turn-based games.
If you call this a click fest you should seriously try it again
As for it becoming a clickfest when defcon 1 happens, just if you are playing ppl that play online for the 1st time.
If you just swooch all your nukes at an enemy at once, i.e. clickfest, you wont win. At least not if that enemy had any tought at all into where he placed his silo's etc.
I mean, sure dont like the game, i dont care, but you keep bringing up points that are so wrong that its like we are not playing the same game

When Britain first at Heav'n's command
Arose from out the azure main;
This was the charter of the land,
And guardian angels sang this strain;
Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves:
Britons never will be slaves.
Britains are a rough and tuff bunch, they are ok.
From kicking Bony's ass 1815 to bleeding the beaches in Normandy.
What a frigging daft statement

Do you actually know that most gaming devs are made out of international teams, pretty much like in any business now days. What about TR for example, bad game, flop, did not create $ in revenues ? Bah, Humbug! I say sir.

Maybe, you're right as far as big devs are concerned, but almost small devs can't afford it.

introversion is five people
the game can be VERY dull and VERY simple and arcade-like IF you don't see the strategic depth and potential the fog of war and timing brings into the field
it's like chess or go or blackjack or any other classic board or card game
you have a very limited set of pieces, all with very simple actions, and generally very simple gameplay
how the game ends up comes entirely out of how much tought you put into your actions
a screensaver version would be awesome though
have it be like the rolling demo, with perhaps a setting that would have the camera automatically follow when something interresting happens

Having played Defcon for a few days, I have to say that it's awesome.
Sure, it doesn't have awesome HDR AA AF-whatever. But the feeling in the game, the ominous soundtrack and the "this-could-really-happen" feeling all make this game really really addictive.
Introversion really makes fresh games, take Darwinia as an example. It's one of my favorite games ever. Go bedroom programmers!
