Before any mad flaming gets started , I am writting this post to offer 1 theory on getting SF3 protected games working without unpluging/disabling ide devices.

I made a customized WinXP install with a tool called nlite.( http://nuhi.msfn.org/ ). While removing some usless crap from my install, I disabled SFC (File Protection),its a system file protection service. and anyway I have been able to play these SF3 games with out unpluging or disabling any CDrom on my system. ( I have 2 Burners on my system)
Just by mounting the samall Image in DTools.

Games that have worked fine for me are:-

Chaos League
Beyond Divinity

Both use the small iso trick. Now I think you can disable that service in XP without doing a full install. Could someone test out this and give me some feedback. Because If all I have to do is run a small iso to play a SF3 game that would be great.

To disable it in a already installed win XP, the service should be found in
Settings/control Panel/administrative tools/services.
(Reboot needed)

I hope this post helps people to be able to play these games as it did me. I will get D-Day soon and test that out, and post the results.

Disable the SFC service , I removed it from my windows install so I can not give you any more details on it, because it is not on my system. But if you are disabling the service you should stop the service first then change it to disabled and reboot.
You can allways start it again later.

This has nothing to do with the services ran in the background, This is an automatic service ran by MS to protect important windows files from being overwritten... By removing this protection and virus or program and remove or replace important files need by windows itself.

Its NOT recommend for the safty of your PC... if you wana give up security to play 3 games... go ahead...

True but you can allways manualy fix any system DLL errors by the following commands

SFC - System File Checker - (SFC /Scannow)

/SCANNOW
Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE
Scans all protected system files at the next boot.
/SCANBOOT
Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT
Windows XP: Return to default settings.

I just don't see the point in running services that can be done by the user. As for viruses, if people don't run a good scanner then more fool them .

All this post was for was to show that I had gotten around the unplug drive crap , it is up to the user if they want to try it. It works fine here with those games. I have had no system problems in the past 6 weeks since I made this custom install.

Personal opinion after read the diferent explications, it's not a proper solution, you encounter the risk have to format C:/Q, because "a unknow error have destroy some kernell32.dll" or similar to win95 or 98 or milenium just for play some chiotte games without CD, XP work fine and it's needet to found a other solution to play this ****, remember, if you like this game buy it, so it's simple make a total boycott of this crapy SF protected gamez do not buy it before have found a proper solution to play it without CD . sorry for bad english. Thand for posting the "idea"

it is not all crappy gamez that come out with this copy protection, how about Panzers which is released early september, and not to long ago Soldiers: Heroes of WWII (which had a good solution)

You would be suprised how well Windows XP works without all that usless automated crap , But if you dont know how to maintain a working OS without the help of minder services it is up to the individual. Me I hate those sort of things , system restore and automated clean up I have the brains to keep on top of it,I think the user should not trust their safety to MS or any other 3rd party shedueling service.

As was stated before it was just a theory no one is telling you to do it.It works for me, and I removed this crap before I was even thinking of SF3 protection,I removed this stuff because I think it slows down windows and is not needed.

Doesn't slow down windows at all if you tell it to scan once upon boot. Its not an every second working service, its a service thats ran if a program or someone tries to overwrite or move a needed dll.

No matter how good you take care of your PC ad-ware and viri (hell even a file scan can be harmful) can always get on it so its always better to be safe the sorry... especially for a service that doesnt have ANY negative effects other then taking 10MB's of HD space...

But it's your system, I personally dont see being able to play a game worth more then my entire's system security...

Who said it had to be turned off all the time? I mean if this mentioned actually works with just disabling (not deleting) the SFC then I don't really see the problem. Just disable it when you want to play SF3 protected game and reenable it afterwards!

Solution is smart but very dangerous, use at your own risk, unfortunately SF3 devs are aware of these minor glitches

you didn't say which services to stop.

To disable it in a already installed win XP, the service should be found in
Settings/control Panel/administrative tools/services.
(Reboot needed)

if you can give us more details it would be great

I used grat nuhi program to make some custom instalations, but a never had idea to disable SFC. Anyway iz there some posability to make two reg files, where one should disable sfc (click on file and it works its job), than restart, playing game, and than run another reg file that should enable sfc again.
Does anyone know how to do this? How to make those files.
Just to reapat what is my ideo:
1. run one reg file that should disable sfc
2. rebot
3. playing a game
4. run second reg file athat should enable sfc
5. rebot

If its possible it seems that is better than disconecting cd roms

Make a file with the extension .reg and put this in it.

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
"SFCDisable"=dword:0xffffff9d

The only problem here is that the sfc doesn't disabled.

I have winxp sp2.

I found this page for winxp sp2 http://unattended.msfn.org/xp/wfp.htm.

Easy way to see if the wfp is running is the event viewer.

A other good solution idea, make a PC with only hard drives on all IDE channel(4HD) an use USB external drive convert boxes to install and use the cd, dvd, burner etc... so you can proper and prompt remove the phisical CD drives for only use the SCSI virtual drive. Save your image's or iso's directly as Data CD or Data DVD, with this configuration, you not need to burn the game CD and have many many place to install gamez. If someone will test this and give me impression of confort by utilisation, because i not have the money to buy the convert boxes for the CDrom.

I don't get the message from wfp after i changed 2 files in the system32 and system32\dllcache folder. But i don't see a message in event viewer that it's been disabled. I used this to files.

- sfc_os.dll http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=23587&st=0
- sfcfiles.dll http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=23587&st=20

Maybe you can give us more details of what virtual drive program you use? Daemon or Alcohol? And a list of games you tried?
