I saw on CNN that General Motors has pulled their ads. They said it wasn't because of the controversy though. They said it was determined months ago to do it. It makes you wonder.

By no stretch of the imagination. I don't want to knock anyone's talent because they can do things i can't, but the music is just empty to me. It's just a bunch of posers talking about their money, bitches, and how tough they are. The exact same mannerisms, the exact same clothes, no one tries to set his own style. It's seems to these things don't matter as long as they're getting paid. Rock has it's posers as well but to me rap has sold itself out to be accepted by the masses.

My friends labeled me a non-conformist, i just accepted it. I want be to accepted for who i am, what i say,what i feel, what i think. It shouldn't matter who i hang with, what i wear,what music i listen to. I'm all about the rights of the individual, people who can think for themselves.

Trying to stir up controversy, but what's the big deal? They've separated them by every other denominator...why not race?

Its not all bullshit like that man.

Mainstream rap does suck...but the oldies and established artists do have something to say.

You cant generalize a type of music based on what you hear on the radio.
Biggie, Tupac, Big L etc all had something to say and talked about more than just bitches and money.
And you have to be able to relate to the music.
If your not from the street, you wont get the music
(unless your one of those poser suburban kids...and still, they dont know what the music is really about)

Sad to say but both rap and rock have gone to shit. There arent any good rappers or rock bands out there nowadays...most music has been commercialized

@fazlez1 & Syco

A lot of the new stuff is missing something. Sometimes I think it has to do with age, maybe because I was more into the party/club scene back then? I associate it differently.

@syco
Suburban kids are pretty ghetto too these days. A 5 min drive from my house is pretty ghetto. 140th and 104th is considered that car theif capital of North America. It is a crack head thing.

You put right when you say it's the new stuff that's sludge. I can listen to the older rap from back in the time of Public Enemy and the like. Some of the messages were positive, not all of them but at least it was intelligent. New Rap lost me when Snoop Dogg got popular. It seemed everyone slowed the tempo down and when i listen to rap i want my heart rate to go up. I miss the turntables and the sampling. I want it to make feel like i can run through a wall. Just listening to Slipknot burns up all my adrenaline, it makes me tired.

You are also right about generalizing music by what's played on the radio. The music on the radio is like watered-down milk, both rock and Rap. I use to work in a retail store where we sold cds. Some the guys would open the new releases and play them in the store so i would hear all of the new stuff. We had free access to Rhapsody, one of the online music stores. They would play all kinds of stuff. I just haven't heard anybody who would make me want to listen to more. I can't claim to come from the streets but i understand what the rappers speak of. I tried my hardest to stay away from that life even if it meant having no social life in high school.

You want somehting that will get your heart going? Listen to some M.O.P stuff. All hype stuff, full of agression etc. Like Welcome to Brownsville and World's Greatest...most of their songs are really good.

@Pistol

Im talking more about the kids who have never seen a gun, or a brick of yay, or hustled etc The ones who listen to someone else talk about shit and think they are gangsta because they can repeat the lyrics Rolling Eyes

@syco

Ya I know that type of kid. (upper class gansta WASP) My area is full of little sikh kids that know very little about Canadian culture. At 8 yrs they didn't know the difference between a fishing rod and a pair of ski's. They were asking me how to catch fish with the ski's LOL. A ways over it is not the case. When they get older, the boys will all go gang and they will start shooting each other.

In my friends son's area those kids are pretty street smart. He is in grade 11 this yr. Those kids have seen a lot and have very little, parent sell all sorts of shit. Despite that tho they are pretty good kids.

Does M.O.P stand for something? I haven't heard of any of these groups. If they're new, i've pretty much given up on new music. There are a lot of new bands i just haven't heard of. Every now and then i see a video on a local heavy metal video show that intrigues me. Sometimes i read record reviews in magazines and if the price is right i'll give the band a shot. I used to get a discount on music so i didn't mind experimenting. Those days are dead now.

The wannabe surburban kids ties into the thread. Why do surburban kids want to be 'gangsta'? They see it on tv and it looks cool. That's the power of tv. A while back a musicain said he didn't have a tv and i just couldn't grasp the concept. How do you live without tv i thought. Now i understand. With the exception of some cartoons it's all mindrot.

Yeah, M.O.P does stand for something but i cant remember what

And no, M.O.P is an old, classic group. They still release shit but they are from the days of biggie and the east coast and west coast wars.

Mobb Deep is also sick. They're older stuff anyway (like Shook Ones and Survival of The Fittest) is good.
Lots of good of rap artists and dancehall reggae artists out there.

Try these (rap)
Cormega
Big L
Can I Bus (cannibus)
Obviously Biggie and the Junior Mafia
M.O.P
Mobb Deep

Some newer (but still 3 or 4 years old and good) artists
Lil Flip
Three Six Mafia
Papoose
J-Hood
D-Block
The Lox's
Slim Thug is alright
Mike Jones

Tons of good rappers out there. Its just the mainstream shit that sucks. You can find the good shit on the internet...the remixes and compilations and shit.
Most artists will tell ya they make 2 types of music - one to sell to people who actually like rap and understand the lifestyle and the other is just to market and make them money.
50 Cent is one of sickest freestylers and his underground shit (he was releasing underground stuff 2 years before his first official cd) is amazing.

nouseforaname thanks for the link and syco thanks for all the suggestions. Now i just have to deal with my hatred of new hip-hop. It's been so long since i've tried anything new because of how weak i think the new stuff is.
