| Code: | For a while, it looked as though Electronic Arts' adaptation of The Godfather would be the sole mob-themed game to hit next-gen consoles this fall. That changed around the time of E3 in May, when THQ announced it would release an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 game based on the hit HBO crime drama The Sopranos in the fourth quarter of 2006.
Today, THQ revealed that it has told the developer of the Xbox 360 Sopranos to fuggedaboutit. During a conference call with analysts following its most recent earnings report, THQ chief financial officer Edward K. Zinser discussed the company's amortization for its first financial quarter, which ended on June 30.
"Amortization of 18 percent was up three points versus the prior year quarter," Zinser told analysts. "This is primarily due to our decision to discontinue development of the Sopranos for Xbox 360. There is no change to our plans to replace it, [but] we will release it on PS2 [during] the holiday [season]." THQ reps later confirmed to GameSpot that the game was "on track" for a fourth-quarter release.
The Sopranos game is being developed by 7 Studios, which also made the game adaptation of the Fantastic 4 movie and the just-released Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow, another film tie-in |

Im glad this game got cancelled to be honest Vladi.
I've mentioned this before but I think the TV series has gradually gone from being exceptional, unmissable television to being a shadow of itself. I fully expected the downturn in quality that the show is going through to carry over to the game and was also reminded of a post pallebrun made in another thread regarding PS3 developers overheads per game, excuse me if this is a misquote but he wrote something along the lines of "if the costs are high then it would lead to a smaller amount of games, but games which are of a much higher quality as a result".
Thats where I want to see the 360, even without seeing the game, having seen titles like 24 and the Godfather to a lesser extent I dont think the 360 needs games like the sopranos. Original titles like Dead Rising, Saints Row, Ninety Nine Nights, Mass Effect, Kingdom under Fire, Ninja Gaiden 2 etc, games which are based around strong ideas, original design and gameplay hold my interest much more than games based primarily on exploiting a high profile tv show/movie.
As always though its just my personal opinion, the game could turn out to be great.

never even knew it was supposed to be coming to the 360. Probably would have sucked like the Getaway.

I'm glad that they didn't cancel the PS2 version too. I love the Sopranos! It's one of the best shows of the last couple of years. I don't think the quality of the show changed but maybe you're talking about season 5 or 6 StarShine? I'm not finished with season 4 yet (I still have 3 episodes to watch).

Yep you guessed right, the series really starts to take a hit in quality right around the point your at now. Season 4 was just OK to me compared to the previous 3 seasons, 5 started out well with the introduction of a few new characters whom I won't name to avoid spoiling the show for you but by the end of the season I had lost interest and as for season 6 - no comment (azzman has said enough).
I could easily rewatch the first 3 seasons of the show because it still is great TV.

Hmm too bad. Imo the same happened with 24. The first three seasons were great but season 4 was pretty stupid (too much happened - it was completely unbelievable). I hope season 5 is better.

"Xbox360 and Playstation2" are not a match, thus no need for another crapjob port of a last-gen game.
We can list the "built from scratch" for 360 games with one hand whereas port-jobs are plentiful. No more, and especially not of games that are already crap even on their native hardware (the ps2).
