have you tried watching something like cowboy bebop, neon genesis evangelion or gits sac?
Those shows are tight, and mostly aimed at young adults, hell I know some 50 year olds who love bebop.

If you like comedy I suggest you watch azumanga daioh, I almost died laughing during that...

It's a shame you hardly ever see any good series like this on tele

You are right yu-gi-oh, pokemon, digimon and such are all crap, but there are some real gems out there if you know what to look for.

True, true
Osaka and her chopsticks for za win..! I so loved it when she started telling one of her horror stories.ah good times, good times.

The gits movies are superior to the series in terms of artwork/animation (Innocence was just weird though imho).

I liked the first gig of gits sac very much, mainly because of the whole laughing man incident, you know?
2nd gig was more of a milking cow.

Uh Looney Toons, Tom & Jerry, Popeye etc, they're fun, and they're classics.. but they're all crap now. You watch em just to have a laugh.

Anime owns that shit, and yes even Yu-Gi-Oh owns that shit.

I bought the Silly Symphonies, Chronological Donald and Mickey Mouse in living color DVD sets, and also the Tom and Jerry sets from 30-50's (amazing art quality and hilarious stuff).

Roadrunner is classic too as are loony tunes (bugs, daffy etc). The older 30-40-early 50's pre-"viewmaster" style cartoons are amazing when you think of when they were made and how their artstyle holds up to ANYTHING made today.. or should I say especially anything made today.

complete BS...
A movie like Mononoke hime is lightyears ahead in terms of artwork/animation/story/soundtrack/character development,...of anything Disney/WB,... ever made.

http://www.onlineghibli.com/mononoke_hime/screens.php?page=1

take a look at those screenies...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mononoke_Hime

No wonder Disney went to great lenghts to aquire the rights to release the ghibli movies, even they know they couldn't produce anything even close to Hayao miyazaki's work.

Have Princess Mononoke and looked at those shots and sorry to tell you my opinion that computerized, flat and fake "aquarells" are hardly a match for actual paintings.

http://www.interlaced.cc/content/26/images/beyondtheclouds020.jpg

I'm appalled by work like that.. please put down your computer, your smudge tool and grab a brush.

You obviously have a strong bias towards Japan. I however have no bias towards American art. I dont even know any american classic art per say, when I mean classic art I mean classic paintings. But I can tell where a classic holds up against newfangled gimmicks. Just because its "clean", digital and colourful doesnt make it great.

Watch some Disney classics The Old Mill 1937 and The Ugly Duckling 1939. Watch pretty much any of the material made in late 30's and 40s by Disney or WB (tom and jerry) esp the oscar winners, think of the pioneering people, paint, canvas, paper, pen and film working methods and compare to the year 2004/5/6, computers, 32bit, photoshop, infinite undo, penpad and digital imaging. Then learn some respect.

Something like Lion King is just as digitised and just as fake as the Japanese animation is. It's a heritage from the viemaster era where simple and flat meant speed and savings. Heck some of it is in 3D FFS.

I didnt say Western animation is superior today, but I will say that considering the era and considering their age, the American animation pieces I mentioned are undeniable classics of art in animation. Something your examples might NEVER BECOME. Might.. who knows. But I would assume most artists in any field have just as little respect for computerized art as I do. Afterall most visual art at their own time was not special, but mundane, popular and commercial.

Yes especially Beyond the clouds is FABULOUS in todays terms judging solely by the sampels you posted.

And fyi my DVD shelf holds the full-price movies Mononoke, Metropolis (Metoroporisu), VampireHunter Bloodlust, Spirited Away and much to your horror, I'm sure, the korean animation piece Wonderful Days.

I'm not even really INTO anime so I guess I shouldnt even have bought those movies, all of which I enjoyed (according to my own appreciation and to a varying degree).

Even though Wonderful Days is a glue and tape form of animation with looooong filler shots.. look out for Korea in the future.. as much as you might belittle them aswell.

And when I said "especially anything today" I meant the 80% of the stuff thats out there, that's Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park and others that are frankly like somebody threw up all over the screen. The "Picasso" of animation, if you will.

We seem to be fighting which is better, Rembrandt or Renoir. Different eras, both masters at art.

I didn't say you were wrong about the old Disney stuff bein' classics, anime is based on that. But it's also undeniably true that it's shallow, very shallow...especially the stories.Artwork/animation isn't everything you know? Story/score/character design, development are just as important IMHO.btw the 30s-40s is a loong way back.

My bias is not so much about Japan as you seem to think,I've seen Wonderful days(korean) myself and liked it very much.Korean just all sounds like mumbling to me...
the director worked his ass off for 5 years on it...Even I know that.
A lot of people who work on anime are korean, easy to see when you look at the credits.

However I can't stand American animation like the simpsons for example;it looks like it was drawn/animated by a 3 year old...not to mention the same freakin' score for like 17 years...the same backgrounds that are used for the millionth time...need I go on?

p.s. I REALLY don't think you should compare classical art like a Van Gogh/Rubens/Renoir,... to any kind of animation.
animation studios don't have the luxury or the budget to spend years on a single frame...
