Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi went in depth on SCEI's business model and strategy during the second part of an interview with Japanese site PC Impress Watch.
Clarifying Sony's business model for the PlayStation 3, Kutaragi said Sony would be diverging from the traditional model of hardware, content, and royalties--which he referred to as a product of "the Nintendo era." He stated that in regards to the PS3, "our message is clear: hardware is our business." Rather than selling hardware at a loss and compensating with royalties, Sony plans to make the PS3 "a common platform, on which top programmers can realize their full potential."
On the other hand, he confirmed that Sony has no plans to stop releasing first-party software and will continue the policy it has followed for the PlayStation 2. "[With the PS2] we're putting out a considerable amount of content. But we don't step on third-party companies' toes; it's more of a friendly rivalry."
Regarding the PS3's high sticker price, Kutaragi explained it was all a matter of brand perception. "Steve Jobs could slap an Apple logo on the PS3 and sell them for $2,000 each," he said. "We couldn't do that. That's the difference between the PlayStation brand and a computer brand, like Apple." He also expressed Sony's wish to make "PlayStation" a byword for "entertainment computer."
He further emphasized the PS3's PC-like abilities, stating there would be no problems running popular flavors of OS, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X: "to the PS3, an OS is like any other application." However, he added that "I think that perhaps you'll see a general purpose Cell [built-in] OS." Previously, the company has said that the PS3 hard drive would come with a Linux-based OS preinstalled.
Kutaragi also expressed his desire that the PS3 should enter the household and form its own "ecosystem" as Apple products have managed to do in the past. "More than Microsoft," he said, "Apple is closer to our vision [for the PS3]." Although SCEI and Apple are not in competition now, Kutaragi rules out nothing in the future. "Jobs loves computers. It's only natural that our visions should overlap."

Haha. What a good read. Sony is just trying to latch onto the whole apple band wagon. This article (imo anyways) really left me feeling that Sony is really grasping for staws, and is feeling the crunch. I find is so funny that Sony is trying to compare themselves along side Apple/steve jobs.
The PS3 maybe able to run Linux, or other Os. But do you think Sony will really alow unsigned code to be run on there system? Heck if sony allows homebrew support on the PS3, im sold. But (and i have a strong feeling they will) if they aproach homebrew like they have with the PSP, a PS3 or any other Sony product will not be in my house.

Kutaragi talks alot of bs but that takes the cake.
And the worst part is the average sony fanboy will actually believe an os like XP can just "run" on any mutant processor directly from the x86 codebase, without drivers to support any of the hardware or through emulation that breaks not only intel or amd patents but the thousands of patens XP itself has and will crawl doing it.
A far more realistic prospect would be running OSX on the 360 powerpc arcitechture.. never gonna happen either.
007 has all the gadgets. Batman has a utility belt! 007 drives a fancy car. Batman has the Batmobile! 007 gets all the ladies. Batman has ROBIN!!!

"to the PS3, an OS is like any other application."
What does he mean by this?! An Operating System is like any other application to the PS3?
I assume I can just run any kind of OS on it then?
Do he honestly think I'll beleive that... *sigh*

lol. I'm wondering how all those (except for Linux) are going to run on a non x86 architechture... I'm sure MS isn't going to do something nice for sony, like make a cell compatible windows.

Sony can make an emulator, but it would consume a lot computing power. You would be able to do basic stuff like use a browser or write a text in Word, but playing games would be impossible.

But yeah, I'm kinda skeptical because of this statement - "to the PS3, an OS is like any other application."
Sounds like a virtual machine kinda thing.

It could simply be a translation error, anyway if you look at Xen or WMware you'll find the "hypervisor" concept, where the OS is managed like an application (in regards for example to context switching)...

Remember the 2 HDMI outputs for playing games on 2 screens with 1080p each?
Just because Kutaragi promises a revolutionary feature, it doesn't necessarily have to be true.

Just because Kutaragi promises a revolutionary feature, it doesn't necessarily have to be true. | Well true, but He porbably realised not everyone has 2 1080p capable televisions. It was a useless feature.
