Like what? You got a pistol, a SMG, a shotgun, a "sniper rifle", a rocket launcher, heck you even get the crowbar again even though there's absolutely no use for it. So what kind of "new weapon" do you actually want?
I already thought it's exaggerated that you get EVERY weapon again in this episode. The machine guns, the shotgun and the rocket launcher for the gunship and stalker are really enough. |
A combination of the SMG and the gravity gun is one of the possibilities which can open new gameplay mechanics such as throwing a special item than can explode in the mid air by the player shooting at it. What I meant was that it's all the same except the graphical update and they could have given us at least a new weapon, it's not like necessary but it shows they added new content. There is nothing new, just exdended version of Half Life 2 with updated graphics which isn't a bad thing for those Half Life 2 lovers I guess.

This is not an expansion this is doing addons completly differently. It's 3 episodes that will come out within a year's time. It's like star wars the movie but done even faster. I don't think you should of really expected answers from the first episde. The trailer for the second episode looks like it's going to be giving a lot of answers though. This one was definetly a setup for the series ahead. The Half Life story line was not made to give complete answers it's a dark spooky twisty game that thrives on mystery. This isn't Sherlock Holmes it's something that is supposed to make you want to play all three episodes not feel satisfied with 1.

I love all the valve haters. How many of you even bought the game (like I did?). Why did i, knowing I could simply wait for a scene release? Am I a fanboi? I'd like to think not. I received HL2 as an xmas gift and greatly enjoyed that game. Seeing Ep1 in EB for $20, I figured meh, I've already got the first, might as well add to the collection. So now I have a Gman box and an Alyx box
Anyway, I loved this game. The level design was fantastic, with some inventive use (and later, overuse) of the "cover ant lion pit with car" trick, some crazy puzzles, and other things that really had me in awe. Stalkers creeped me the fuck out like I knew they would...the train wreck scene almosy had me in tears....all I could here was screaming, I'm effin disoriented to hell and I flick on my flashlight only to stare eyeball to eyeball with a fucking stalker...I'm glad I'm not 50 yet or that'd be some serious heart attack right there.
The thing that really had me going was the scarcity of ammo. I can't aim for shit, and was constanly running out of ammo early on. Most of it was wasted on respawning ant lions. The moment that really shines for me, and one that really cements HL2 as the best FPS I've played, was running through the Combine blockade, Alyx running support with the sniper rifle, and me, grav gun in hand, holding a large corrugated steel sheet as a shield, hearing the combine bullets bouncing off, as I a crouch ever nearer to them. How many games let you do that?! Outside of a scripted sequence? I really thought the grav gun would just be some gimmicky effect. But the damn thing opens up so many possibilties on how to play your game.
My only gripe, really, was the near constant darkness in the middle levels. I'm glad to be able to use a flashlight and gun at the same time, but damn I have a $10 LED light that can bathe pitch black rooms with more light, and last alot longer too. The flares were a great touch, and really added to the atmosphere. The final battle, while insanely easy, was very very intense. Just the whole scene...watching the strider crawl into the trainyard...it was just another ooohhh fuuuuuck moment for me.
The hostage part could've been done alot better.
Overall, am I sad I spent $20 on this? Nah. I spend that much on a movie ticket+popcorn to go see Xmen 3. And I got way more entertainment from HL2EP1, although the popcorn was pretty bitchin Not lookcing forward to fighting those slug things. I'm sure valve will come up with some lame "vortigaunts are making some psychic shield, attack before the slug can mind zap you!" shit. But yah, I'll probably buy Ep2 as well. Maybe my inner fanboi will be pleased and it'll be a vortigaunt box that'd be pretty sweet.
i can has computar?!

So you didn't pay for it either.

According to the commentary, that was meant to introduce the new feature of being able to guide Alyx' firepower.

I guess you missed Alyx' comment about this very issue then.

Just finished the game and it was a litle short imo. Even Sin Episodes: Emergence was bigger... Besides, it didn´t answer any questions. Just how they survived the explosion of HL2 finale...

it's just something to keep the artistic department busy while the programmers enhance the graphics engine

Excellent. After paying $20 for Sin, I'm not sure how often I want to continually drop $20 for 4 or 5 hours of gameplay.

y-x= number of pirated copies

as long as the game is good I don't mind, I have payed $50 and $60 for ten hours of crappyness. as long as the graphics are updated regularly and the gameplay is good I think it's a good deal.
But I don't think I would bother if they are still using the same engine 2 or 3 years from now

Selling mods for the mod developer that wants to sell their work is all good, but is it still a mod? when is it a game? If Steam blurs the line between Games and Mods a bit, Valve can make their games like mods too, hey it allows for an easy way to develop.
You can Just fix or add it later, hell you can just design it all later, little quality assurance needed.
No need to release anything close to final when it first comes out right? Except people pay for it then. And lots of Mandatory patches that might break/change something you payed for. Oops can't reinstall and avoid last patch here.
Mods are incomplete and need lots of work thats why they're free, it's bad to sell them if you plan to continue to make them that way.
HL2 having no MP on release, to CSS having 2 player models and a few maps for a long time point to this kind of development. And Steam encourages the sale of games like this.
If you don't feel like a tool when you buy an unfinished product from Steam and wait for the games completion while looking at ads for other incomplete games, you might be a sucker, or just someone I can argue with. Steam sure makes things blurry.
edit: sorry lost it, took some crap out, drug withdrawal is bad mmkay.

But the game sucked!!! I think it was a mistake to sell that crap...
And this episodic method is not that great. When it ends you almost feel like it was a demo and you want the full version. I´m not talking about the lenght of the game, just the feeling that we have when appears the credits...

I bought it and liked it, was ok, it was a full SP game and had multiplayer too right off the bat when you payed for it, without the need for the devs to add content that was missing when they sold it to you. It was a pre Steam era game.
When you look at the box for gunmen chronicles it's just a game built off the HL engine, not a 1/2 to 3/4 game you need to take online to complete at a future date, and not a mini-episode/techdemo ether. You can tell it went thru a publisher, it was worth selling so it never looked like a mod to me, that's what should happen to mod authors IMO.
The fuss is that episodes prove Steam is ushering in the "sell it now finish it later" Steam era. I thought when HL2 went thru steam things might be ok.. But no.. Now I just see why Valve sued Sierra, no more quality assurance, maybe. No good publisher would sell incomplete bring it online to finish it stuff like this on store shelves. well maybe.
No wonder Gordon can't even walk yet, much less creep from enemies or other things that would make their engines levels last longer.
edit: more stupid rant gone, sorry all. heh

well it's no secret that this episode extravagenza is just a money stunt, they leave a "wanting more" feeling on purpose, so you go out again when episode two comes out and buy it. If we'd buy it i would understand, but it's not like we're paying anything, so the only thing that really sucks is the time between this release and the next one.

1. I minor technicality
2. Feature or not, realistic or not, it was getting bothersome, and really it was just bad that I kept running out of power for the light, leading to....
3. Nope, I heard her comment. I laughed till I peed. I just wish something comes out of that. IE Dr. Kleiner does indeed enchance the flashlight in later episode. Since it looks like most of EP2 will be outdoors, I'm hoping it won't be to flashlight dependant.
