|

Now RIIA and co. are targeting nzb sites. I remember there were like 5+ sites which provided those files but now they're all closed except for one. Is this the end of the nzb format, and maybe even usenet itself?
what do you think?

There is more then one .nzb site still open.

NZB isnt like a torrent or P2P, stopping them is pretty imposible... although I guess that has been said about other things. Newsgroups are and always will be public domain, they really cant be touched.

P2P I can see your point about, but I think that, functionally at least, nzb files could be compared to torrents. Sure, instead of giving the exact location, NZB files give directions that start inside of a server that has the files already, but considering how widespread newsgroups are, and considering the power and previous actions, as well as the complete ignorance, of the **AA's, I'd have to say that they'll shut down nzb sites just like they did torrent sites.
That isn't to say newsgroups will go away. Just like torrents have private trackers and there are still public [many] sites up, nzb sites will continue to exist, and anyone worth the keyboard they're typing on will have the skills to track the files they need down in the most popular groups.
Eliminating downloaders is an unrealistic goal - even the MPAA knows that. Their goal is simply to make getting access to the stuff inconvenient enough that the average Joe Blow will get frustrated and go to amazon.com instead. Incompetent as they are, they've still managed to abuse America's frustrating legal system to the point where many are too scared to go to warez sources, and many more don't know how far warez sources go.
True story: 95% of the people I've spoken with on the subject had no idea about a warez structure beyond [insert the name of P2P program], and were pretty fucking amazed to find out about IRC. Most of them caught on pretty quickly, though.
and finally, the obligatory:

I think he means of the original 5
nzb's are pretty much identical to torrents in terms of what they provide. They each have a file name, location and size. Of course torrents also contain track info as well as (sometimes) download info such as the account ID.

Well, its not that easy to take down nzb index sites.
The MPAA tried it with binnews - and lost. You just need a lawyer and those *AA fucks make poo poo into their pants and get lost. Newzbin, yabse, binsearch, ngindex - all still online.

It might not be easy to take down nzb sites, but what about the users leeching? It is very easy for companies like Giganews and others to log what people post and leech, and because you have to pay with your cc, you can easily be targeted by the RIAA or others. I think it won't be long untill newsgroup providers are forced to start logging.
