Update:
CNCden.com wrote: |
There's not a whole lot of info on C&C 3 yet, but it's only been a day. EA doesn't have a fast-food mentality, so most likely we won't get more meat n potatoes until the E3 Expo show in May. Below I have listed some facts we know so far.
-C&C 3 to ship sometime 2007.
-Mike Verdu will be the Executive Producer.
-Jason Bender will be the Lead Designer.
-C&C 3 begins in the year 2047.
-FMV cut scenes return.
-Kane will return from the dead. But was he ever truly dead?
-Game will use an updated version of the Sage engine.
-Sides are GDI, Nod, and a yet un-named third side.
-Smarter AI (remains to be seen)
-Voice over IP support, Clan support, Observer and spectator modes.
-Single player missions/AI Skirmish
-Multiplayer: Skirmish, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, World DominationAlso, EA will be holding several 'player summits' during the development of C&C 3 so they can get feedback and ideas from C&C players.

Official Press Release Out!
Spoiler: |
REDWOOD CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 20, 2006--The epic struggle between the Global Defense Initiative (GDI) and The Brotherhood of NOD continues ... and the third Tiberium War is about to begin. Welcome back, Commander. Electronic Arts (Nasdaq:ERTS - News) today announced that Command & Conquer(TM), the groundbreaking series that put the Real-time Strategy (RTS) genre on the map, is returning in full force with Command & Conquer(TM) 3 Tiberium Wars(1). This highly-anticipated next chapter takes the popular series back to its roots in the Tiberium universe and features the fast, fluid gameplay that Command & Conquer is known for and a gripping story that will redefine storytelling in RTS games.
It is 2047 and the stakes could not be higher. Tiberium -- a self-replicating alien substance that has infected the Earth -- is spreading like a radioactive ice age. The GDI, a high-tech alliance of the world's most advanced nations, is fighting to contain Tiberium, but Kane, the megalomaniacal leader of The Brotherhood of NOD has other plans for Earth. Kane's secret society turned superpower is bent on using Tiberium to take control and transform humanity into his twisted vision of the future. All-out war rages over Tiberium and the fate of the planet rests in the balance.
"Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars combines fast-paced gameplay with new ways to tell a story in an RTS game," said Mike Verdu, Executive Producer at EA Los Angeles (EALA). "We're building a next generation Command & Conquer game that is true to the spirit of this classic franchise, but is updated with state-of-the-art visuals, added strategic depth, and gameplay innovations that will move the genre forward. I am very excited to be working on this amazing game."
"We have been waiting to reveal this game for quite some time and are thrilled to bring the series back to where it all began," said Louis Castle, VP of Creative Development at EA Los Angeles (EALA) and co-founder of Westwood Studios, creator of the Command & Conquer series. "The Tiberium universe is a personal favorite of mine, and this saga's new direction will prove to be a worthy addition to one of the most celebrated RTS franchises."
Experience a revolution in RTS gaming with a breakthrough single player campaign that rewards you for your gameplay style. Add layers of strategy to your gaming experience by building mobile bases, wielding the power of terrifying Ion Storms on the battlefield, or customizing your armies by combining units. Battle it out online with native voice-over IP, integrated clan support, and new spectator modes that let you play RTS games like a sport.
Currently in development at EALA, Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars will ship in 2007 for Windows PC. This product is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information about Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars or the Command & Conquer series, please visit www.CommandAndConquer.EA.com.

Oh and more info:
* C&C3 will be set some time after the events in Tiberian Sun: Firestorm. As you may recall, Firestorm assumed the GDI ending in Tiberian Sun, and itself ended with GDI in the possession of the Tacitus, the Philadelphia still in orbit, Nod coming under the control of Slavik, and CABAL presumed destroyed. The final cutscene of Firestorm, however, left players with a cliffhanger that posited that both CABAL and Kane survived in some form. C&C3 begins several years later, with the GDI in control of the "safe" (Tiberium-free) zones of the Earth, and attempting to use its knowledge of the Tacticus to remove the Tiberium infestation. The story opens with a Nod assault on the Philadelphia orbital station that throws the GDI into disarray.
* A third side will be introduced, but it is as yet unknown. Speculation falls to it being either independent mutants, robots and cyborgs under the command of CABAL, or alien forces.
* Kane is set to make a return, but there is no word on whether Joseph Kucan will reprise his role as everyone's favourite sociopathic madman.
* Full-motion-video is back. The PC Gamer article hints that there will be not only in-between-mission cinematics but more in-game cinematics of the type seen in Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 (and in the non-C&C RTS Act of War).
* C&C3 will, naturally, be using a further upgraded version of the same engine that has powered Generals and both Battle for Middle-Earth games. For those of you who don't have BFME2, let me point out that its system requirements easily top those of Quake IV, so start saving up those pennies to buy the uber-system you'll likely need to run C&C3 at max detail.
* The EA project team has stated that their two biggest design goals are improving the AI and creating a more immersive campaign.
* Multiplayer will feature voice chat support.
* GDI units known to be making a comeback include the Orca and the Mammoth Tank, though any art of these units at this time is liable to be entirely temporary.
* No news on whether the interface will be Generals-style or traditional C&C-sidebar style. None of the screenshots or other art in the PC Gamer article included any pictures of a HUD.
* It is extremely unlikely that C&C3 will come out this year. A reasonable estimate for the release date is midway through 2007 - in other words, a summer blockbuster for next year. Or to put it in more plain words... wait until next spring before dropping your cash on a new system.
* As they did with BFMEII, EA is planning several "community summits" to bring C&C fans (modders, fansite operators, other prominent community members) down to their Los Angeles studios for previews and discussions.

Statement from long time community manager Aaron "Apoc" Kaufman:
Quote: |
Hey guys,
Well, I can finally post in this thread now that the official message is out. Basically, I would just like to say that I am extremely excited to be the Community Manager for this franchise and especially this title. I don't think I ever imagined i'd be filling these shoes when I first played C&C 95 and Red Alert 1. I've got some massive community battle plans that I cannot reveal yet, but we have an epic journey ahead of us friends.
So, you'll come to learn that I (we) the development team really take your opinions seriously and constructively. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but at the end of the day, its great to see the insane amount of excitement for the simple fact that C&C is back in its truest form!
Welcome back Commander.
BTW, i've read some 2000+ posts across many boards.

I just got off the phone with Sledgehammer70 (see the post below) as he was heading home from a productive day at E3, and he had some pretty interesting things to say about his experience with the C&C3 trailers and demo. As I thought, EA is indeed using the same "360-degree" surround-video setup they had for BFME2 to show a special surround trailer of C&C3. The trailer builds up the storyline only to end with the cliffhanger image of a space ship creeping up on the Earth...
On a more tangible note, Sledge confirmed that the rendering engine has been significantly upgraded for C&C3 and looks more awesome than any other RTS game he's seen - which makes sense, since C&C3 is the most far-off RTS game we know of. He said it even blew away, in his opinion, the long-awaited Supreme Commander, the sort of "spiritual sequel" to Total Annihilation. From his perspective, C&C3 had a much more tactical and control-oriented focus compared to the chaos of SC, which he described as much more Starcraft-like.
One item of interest is that (some of?) the GDI infantry have little jet packs that allow them to power-jump off of cliffs to get places faster - sounds like a more realistic version of the JumpJet infantry from TS and RA2.
Sledge said C&C3 is definitely going to be a "High EPM" game - for those of you not In The Know, EPM stands for "Explosions Per Minute". Remember my C&C Top Ten video? Looks like someone at EA heard about my #1 choice .
Sledge was expecting the sort of improvement that BFME2 brought to BFME, but he told me C&C3 improves on BFME2's engine far more impressively, with scorching sun haze, tanks that look real, and structures that blew him away.
Oh... and one more thing:
Sledge said he'd see if he could "smuggle" us (with Apoc's permission - and maybe with Apoc's camera, too) a tape of the 360-degree trailer video tomorrow |
Trailer and Gameplay Expression
planetcnc wrote: |
The first trailer we watched explained the story behind the upcoming game. According to executive producer Mike Verdu, the development team is looking to make the game "a landmark in terms of story." To that end, EA LA is bringing back the classic live-action full-motion video (FMV) cinematic sequences from the previous games. The first trailer we watched leaned heavily on FMV and told the story presumably from the perspective of the game's main character, a biochemist-turned-GDI operative who witnessed the transformation of planet Earth after the mysterious substance known as Tiberium, which "isn't of this world" (suggesting that Tiberium is an alien substance from somewhere in outer space).
(...)
This sequence of events polarized the world, so that the world's inhabitants aligned themselves with either GDI or Nod, a standoff that was threatening enough to global stabilty until, as the narrator of the trailer explained against a wide shot of Earth from outer space, "they came."
(boldface emphasis mine)
So, looks like aliens are the third faction after all. Anyone terribly surprised? It's good to have confirmation that FMVs are back as well. There's a healthy chunk of other information in the article, from description of what EA hopes to do with the EA as well as notes about the enhancements being made to the BFME2 RTS engine - basically, it looks they're going to add massive bloom/haze/HDR effects for the "Desert" maps, in addition to copious Big Explosions And Stuff for when things blow up -- which is good, because I think the original C&C had some of the finest explosions for its time, topped only (maybe) by shooters such as Crusader: No Remorse.

Aliens the 3rd side!
Hammers' full preview:

As most of you online are looking for all the news you can get for CnC 3, I have good news. I was able to get a first hand look at what EA is bringing to the table. Let alone did I get to see an in-depth look at how EA is approaching the game, but I actually was able to see actually game play from what EA has created thus far.
EA’s approach on the fiction is astonishing; they really have taken the next step in the development of CnC 3. By doing this in-depth strategy they have created what they are calling the CnC Bible. This book includes the Entire story line of Tibirum and it goes more in-depth that a Onion has rings. As the community will most likely never see this bible, it has been developed for the EA’s dev team so they know the story and have the complete background of how all the races came about and how they fuction with int he CnC era.
The Game is built on the same engine BFME2 was built it, with nice saturated graphics and HDRI sun effects. The actual units such as helicopters and tanks look so realistic for there time I felt like I was watching a movie with live units. The level layout is very much like the CnC we see today, but has all the perks you can want in the new series. When I was shown the game play everything ran very smooth and was really just a jaw dropping moment. I couldn’t believe CnC 3 was actually alive. The selecting of units and placing units is very much like any other RTS on the market today, but it does have a few nice flashy waypoint and spot selection graphics, that let you know where you just sent your units.
The actual Fiction and story behind the game is probably the best I have ever seen, With showing how GDI are try to secretly save the world and as NOD is convincing the world GDI is the enemy You can only see how EA has a great story on there hands, and if you have played any of the games out of the series you know what I am talking about. But the real catch is how these 2 factions are split up in either your GDI or not GDI, until they came. Now this is the hanger they left me on, as they zoomed out from beyond the earth it seemed a space ship was coming out of deep space. What faction are they, how do they work is not known just yet.
