I have 3 PCs @ home all connected through a Lan, and for some time I have tought about the possibility of the idle times of the other PCs could with somekind of software work with my work computer.

basicly it would be a dual or tri processor configuration through network.

I know that SETI program has a similar software.

is there any kind of program for comercial or home use able to use network cpu's in such a way?

Its known as a cluster.. it can be done with linux pretty easily, not so sure about windows though.

*1 google search later*

Seems as though the server editions of windows have the capability of clustering, I am unsure of how capable it will be or how easy it will be to setup, I would also assume it would require you to run the server editions on ALL of the machines.

Some info above.. As for Linux there are hundereds of methods, from applications on normal distro's to fully blown clustering distrobutions. The best thing to do would be to use one of the CD/PXE bootable distro's that would allow you to simply reboot the machines with a CD in the drive (or boot over the network using PXE) and attach the new nodes.. works great, me and friend used to do it in the school he ran Smile

Im sure you will find plenty of info on google by searching for clustering.. Maybe someone has more information on clustering in windows via a simple application..

but how does that work?, one of the computers would have the real CPU and another Virtual CPU (the combined power of the other PC's), it would be something like that right?

Processing is simply spread, within linux all of the machines become one.. One machine is the master, it is the one you use, the others become nodes/slaves and cannot be used, they simply handle processing. Within windows, I am unsure, I would guess it works the same..
