Reviews all mention Silent Hill 2, David Lynch, Twin Peaks.
And apparently there's a story mode for the cowards among us who are just looking for a good story and exploring
Edit: played for about 2 hours (found the bells). Cool game, very atmospheric. Coward mode is enough for me It's indeed Silent Hill 2 meets David Lynch (the characters are pulled straight out of his movies, creepy guy from Lost Highway in particular).
The numbers don't decide, the system is a lie. The river running dry, the wings of butterflies.
And you may pour us away like soup. Like we're pretty broken flowers.

I doubt you'll be disappointed. It's the best SH game I played since, well SH2

Thanks for the heads up, I was afraid this would be another of those wimpy all-style-no-substance experiences (looking at you, Replaced!), but thankfully it's definitely not. The game is a proper survival horror with multilayered level design, meaningful exploration/resource management and little handholding - all immersed in an impeccable, mysterious atmosphere and fitting art style. Its influences are clear as already mentioned with mechanics borrowed from SH2/RE, and a ton of Lynch.
I'm not done with it yet, but it's a pleasant surprise so far amidst a sea of plain averageness and critically acclaimed(tm) tripeA titles that did absolutely nothing for me.
The game is so good. The progression balance is close to perfect. The sense of exploration is great. There's an eerie atmosphere, but don't expect right out horror.
I can't say much about the story yet. But the writing is good.

Yeah, apparently the nightmare mode just adds more and stronger enemies, but a game like this doesn't get better with more enemies, imho. It's all atmosphere. So glad it has an easy mode, it would be a shame to have missed out on this.
Btw: when you have the minimap open, the buttons to see the lower floors is the same as using an item. I've lost all my health potions and repair toolkits because of this
So perhaps I'll just start over. Oh, and those yellow locks can just be shot open. Took me way too long to realize this Same as using the shotgun for the boarded up walls.

It's probably one of the best games I've played this year. I would even dare to say that it's the best.
There are very few negatives to even mention about this one. Some animations are wonky, some backgrounds here and there could have a bit more detail.
For the price, you get the best Silent Hill game since 2 with a fantastic RE-style gameplay intertwined with a neatly designed metroidvania. The exploration is just so enticing and well done. Everything is there for you to notice, you just have to pay attention. There are cool puzzles, plenty of secrets, fun guns, upgrades, etc.
The story is the supernatural psychological fuckery in the vein of SH and Twin Peaks. I liked it. There's not a moment when the writing comes off as weak.
Finished too, got all 3 endings but ended at 99% completion. fuuuuuu
I think the only thing I missed is the car trunk before the motel. Never found the key for that.
Nice story, and apart from the easiest (bad) ending which gives you nothing, the other 2 endings make it pretty clear what's it all about.
Perhaps the only strange thing about these 2 endings, is that the supposedly 'best' ending (with the 2 rings) doesn't feel like the best one.
The other ending also requires finding all artifacts, for which you basically have to explore the entire map (including an optional boss fight).
