The game is alright so far. I like the atmosphere, the story seems to be going somewhere. There is less filler content in this one, at least so far.

The graphics are almost a carbon copy of the original. The face animations are weird to say the least in this day and age.

The combat is a mixed bag. Haywire camera at times, too much shit on the screen that's hard to distinguish because is black, red or a dark hue of blue. The combat feels very samey, because you don't have that many active movesets at a time.

The UI is still console trash.

What a shit game this is as far as I'm concerned. It's exactly what I feared; it's only Control in the name. Besides some story bits that borrows from the original Control it's just a ridiculous hack'n'slash for the masses.

I loved the original Control; the style, the gameplay elements etc., everything that this game lacks. From what I've seen besides my own experience from playing it a bit it doesn't seem to get better later on. It's fight/kill -> cutscene -> fight/kill -> cutscene etc.

It's probably a pretty good game for couch potatoes who likes to turn off their brains and just smash the button to kill baddies over and over in a weird and whacky environment.

Preliminary score: 3/10
Based on the fact that I hoped for a proper sequel that would continue from the first game and improve the formula. It's just my opinion.

It will definitely sell a lot more than the original since it's got proper PR and is purely aimed at couch potato gamepad gamers.

Annapurna (partner, invested 50% of the budget) will be very happy with the return on investment. That combined with the replacement of the former CEO with Jean-Charles Gaudechon, previously serving in senior roles at Electronic Arts.
It's definitely a case of "We need to make money guys. You messed up badly with Firebreak and you've lost too much money. Make a console game with simple gameplay, none of that brainy shit".

The gameplay is not much worse than the original. It's different, being hack & slash, but the original wasn't this complex tactical shooter either. You had some more interesting options for sure (maybe you have in this one as well and I haven't unlocked them). But I wasn't mind blown by Control. It always felt like it had too much game in it, too much grinding just for the sake of it. A focus on content quantity rather than quality.

In terms of combat encounters, this is no better. But I think there's a better balance in this one when it comes to missions/puzzles/etc.

The cardboard physics drive me insane.

Firefights in Control 1 sucked ass. I believe I was going through the DLC when at some point I was so fed up by the repetiveness and just installed a trainer to get through encounters quicker.
I am not saying Control 1 was bad or anything, it did me make to want to finish the main game and DLCs, but the combat really was not a strong point.

I'm just severely off-put by generic inception/car commercials looks of the game. Not something that will be soon on my radar when prices drop.

Reached "The Artist", alt+F4'd. Feels incoherent and couchpotatoed like someone mentioned earlier. No traces of Lake's psychotic writing so far, bombastic cutscenes with constant build-noise-to-instant-silence audio.. unimpressed. But I think i reached further than Townfall.

Visuals are OK but performance is not great for what it shows.

I loved the pacing in C1, this has that typical MORE feel that ends up being too much, too fast.

I don't get this complaint that the sequel is consolized. Have you guys fallen victims to Nvidia RTX marketing? Laughing

Control was a game designed for consoles. The UI was atrocious. The controls and movement were controller centric. The game was even exclusive on Epic, taking away the freedom of choice that PC platform has.

I never got the super popularity of the first game. I finished it, but it was kinda always just OK. Did i get tired of boring office buildings? Fuck yes i did.

Control was under no circumstance a perfect game when it comes to battle. All the hiss repeatedly spawning whenever you entered an area where they had spawned before got really tiring.

The rest I loved. The exploration (I loved the Panopticon and the OoP's etc.), finding "hidden" routes, the secrets, characters like Langston babbling away, the motel between worlds/dimensions and so on. I did like the powers system with Parautilitarian abilities even though they became a bit too OP too quickly. Maxing out launch basically made it easy to take out anything.
Some of the different modes of the gun wasn't particularly useful but I do think they filled their purpose. I mainly used the basic pistol + the grenade launcher. I quickly learned how to use it in a very efficient way (throw three grenades asap and trigger them while in the air close to the target(s). I've seen other players settling on other modes that they mastered.

It's the same deal though, the gameplay style of Control wasn't for everyone just like the gameplay style of Control Resonant isn't for everyone. Due to the two games being nothing alike means it's going to divide players between those who prefer the slower exploration style of the first and the hack'n'slash style of the second.

What exacerbates it is the fact that "new" Remedy left everything they had done previously was ignored and went for an "easier" game for the masses. It's good for Remedy since they'll make a hell of a lot more money than any of their previous games and that may be so important that they can actually survive as a developer. They had three years of consecutive losses, the last year being extra dire due to their failure with FBC Firebreak (what a waste of a game that was).

My opinions are obviously just that, my opinions. It's good that Remedy managed to score a hit with mass appeal which will bring them into the black. It's a pity that they had to give up their own creative visions, at least for this game. If this game saves Remedy as a developer studio it means they can still work on their Remedy-style games.

It's notable that Sam Lake wasn't involved with Control Resonant as opposed to the first game where he essentially built the story skeleton, the characters, and the high-level creative direction, but left the actual game direction (level design, gameplay systems, day-to-day development) to Kasurinen and the team. There was no reason for him to work on Resonant since it's a completely different style of game with very little in the way of interactive narrative. Lake is fully focusing on Max Payne and Alan Wake, not Control.

Unfortunately the future of the Control franchise seems very glum to me. I doubt they'll make a proper sequel to Control that is in the same style (albeit more evolved, improved and bigger).

Control-franchise director Kasurinen:
Quote:
The game needs to sell 3–4 million copies to break even on its €50M budget. Kasurinen acknowledged this directly: "There's no studio in the world where the creative side can sit and do whatever they want without worrying about the needs and parameters they need to fulfil to make a successful product... We are a public company."

The game itself wasn't consolized even though the surround bits (UI) was to a degree. Gameplay itself was perfectly fine using M+KB and felt natural and platform neutral.

It was so platform neutral that it had a playstation exclusive mission. Laughing

I liked the original Control more than this - and I didn't really care for Control all that much. Laughing

The monster designs, combat, and movement - it's all just so generic and boring. You've got the typical Remedy mind-fuckery, where the writing team just ingests a bunch of hallucinogenic drugs and craps out whatever comes out onto a page. It worked in Alan Wake as the entire thing was grounded via him being a writer / bringing his darkest imaginings to life - here it's just silly.

Now that I think back on it, Alan Wake and the first two Max Payne titles are the only games from them I genuinely enjoyed. Everything else has been lackluster hipster drivel. Such a shame. Sad

The talents are a mess, you have to pick up a lot of trash just to reach some talents that you want.

The combat is DMC5 from temu. I can just spam click with a few dodges in between until I win.

The game is a fucking asset flip of itself. In the evacuation area I think I saw 6-10 laundromats.

@Pey You call this 9.5?

I really love Remedy. Liked all their games except Anal 2.

I bought this. (Reviews were so positive).

When does it start to click? I am 2 hours in and ... it doesn't click with me sadly.

The enemy design is so fucking smudged, I can't see many of the attacks of enemies incoming, because it is a visual mess.

Control always looked so anonymous and generic to me, like zero style, drab environments etc. Like someone super bored doing a game and with no real inspiration apart from maybe the office building they are in.
Yes this looks a bit more spiced up, but also in the "meh" way for me, basically what i hate about modern games.

I find Remedy overall super overrated though, always have.

Control had some cool sections but it takes like 8 hours to get good. It was so needlessly boring for the first chunk of the game. It also has one of the fugliest ray tracing implementations ever
