The Sinking City 2 is difficult and pushes you to your limits. Yet every time it sings and embraces the incomprehensible Lovecraftian nightmares, Faye and Calvin’s story brings it all down. Yet even long-time fans of survival horror will find a challenge here. Get past the annoying and unlikeable protagonists, and you’ll have a great time. Be sure to mute the audio during the last two boss fights, or you’ll end up as insane as those who chose to stay in the chaos.

Is it even more incomprehensible that this review?
''Get past the annoying and unlikeable protagonists''
I played the game for 4 hours and 55 minutes and I don't get this comment. Maybe they get more annoying later but so far nothing about them felt annoying to me.
The game is alright so far. It's your typical bigger badder sequel. The first one was fairly basic with a nice mix of Sherlock Holmes style deduction and janky but serviceable combat. This one is less brain and more brawn with a bigger budget.
"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty
I think what he tried to tell us is that once the story goes deep with lovecraftian stuff the game shifts to protagonists and ruin the immersion and breaks the flow. But i havent played it.
The combat is a bit stiff and rhere are too many enemies to deal with.
They missed a great opportunity with the level design. The game is too linear, the boat replaces walking between the objectives. There are no secondary areas to explore, at least I haven't found any and I've been to three areas so far.
Agreed, from the rather brief isotesting I've done this morning this sequel doesn't seem offensively poor but at the same time, it doesn't really excel at anything in particular because of all its derivative designs, falling into the typical serviceable 'n' forgettable /10 pit. Less janky than the first one but also less ambitious and as a result, it lost some soul in the process.
The best part about the game is that it uses UE 5.8 and I didn't notice any stutters whatsoever, at least with my rig.
Tried to like this, but i just can't. The enemies are annoyiing and too numerous. Numerous enemies are ok in many games, but not this, with its small corridors so you end up having to kill them... and waste all your ammo in the process. They jank around and make sure you miss every few shots and fun times were to to be had. World felt artificial, story is... servicable? I don't know. I didn't feel any drive but until i reached the firestation it was alright but i just couldnt be bothered mroe.

The combat is a combination of RE2R and RE4R. There's definitely a problem with the number of enemies and the fact that some respawn. But most of the fights are avoidable and I didn't have any issues with ammo yet (3rd difficulty level).
Sadly, The Sinking City 2 is not as Lovecraftian as advertised.
There's no macabre, no fear of the unknown, no one is losing their mind, etc..
Everybody seems to be aware of elder things, Shoggoths, Yog Sathoth, you name it and somebody knows about it. Most of Lovecraftian elements come from references, not atmosphere and that's a big con.
The main narrative borders mediocrity at times, mostly due to the main characters becoming rather cringy in the 2nd half of the game and the story unfolding like an action game, instead of following the classic themes of a Lovecraftian setting.
I'm pretty disappointed with these aspects. I also have to add to the list of notable cons the inconsistent performance, the annoying aspects of the combat (the enemy's design can be annoying, the number of enemies are over-tuned, the way some guns behave, animations clunkyness). And when you draw the line, it's another Lovecraftian experience of what could have been if...
I did enjoy the puzzles, the visual design of the city and its landmarks, the radios and other references and the ending. But I wouldn't recommend this at full price nor if you are expecting a true Lovecraftian game.
I don’t know how much of the game I’ve yet to go but after 10 hours, I’m at the cruise ship.
I’m liking it more than I expected I gotta say.
It’s definitely more Resident Evil than the first game from what I remember with an almost identical Dead Space stomp.
The worms look good and I was having fun squashing them all but it got old really quick so I just ignore them now.
I seem to recall there being a hell of a lot more dialogue in The Sinking City which they seem to have disregarded for the sequel.
The Deep Ones could have looked better and they’re annoying to fight and take too much to put down.
Constant randomly appearing ammo and health during a boss encounters is s bit jarring but it certainly makes them easier.
Took me several hours to realise I could craft ammo and health items as well as equipping talents lol.
They did a great job with the visuals and I was impressed with the map design.
They also made the game in only 3.5 years apparently.
It’s a pretty fun time and I’d also rate it a solid 8/10.
