Lies of P is the only soulslike i've played that is worth a damn and in some cases exceeds the source material. This looks like another shitty clone with floaty combat and movement

I bought Lies of P and that game is such a bore. It was really hard getting through just the first section of the game due to how bored i was with its level design, enemies, just overall theme.

I watched a playthrough and i never saw even a hint of something i would have considered as some sort of "wow, that place looks awesome to explore, i have to get back in", this is a super consistent thing through both Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and any Dark Souls where the level design itself just draws you in.

This game looks bleak for the sake of being bleak and trying to mimic a style and that's all to it. DS, Elden Ring, it actually has this down to a perfection, it's bleak but not in this fake way, there are hints all the time of something which isn't. Fall of Avalon, another game where they just don't get it, just tiresome and generic due to not understanding good design and how to balance it so that it doesn't get dull. A lot of players doesn't get it either i guess so in that sense it works.

Lies of P was a low budget game and they definitely didn't try and do ALL THE THINGS with their budget (and end up with a bunch of mediocre everything) .. the maps are definitely more closed off than something like Bloodborne or Dark Souls 1 (which are absolutely masterful in how the world is connected) but there are some good ones in the game. It does open up more as you play but yeah, you can tell it was low budget. As far the combat goes, it was derivative of course, but in a good way since it ended up feeling like a cross between Sekiro and Bloodborne, which are probably my 2 favorite From games.

What they nailed was the weapons, animations, movement and feel. And there are some damn good bosses too. Hub area and music were great too. Very charming game and cool lore imo. DLC was great but they did go a bit Elden Ring retard on all the input reading and hyper aggression of the bosses.

Again I couldn't agree more. Lies of P was excellent.

With all the raving reviews here I still might give it a try

Anyway, looking at Mortal Shell 2, look at how the character ice skates around when they're swinging weapons Laughing looks like shit and will feel like shit.

It has 637 people credited, so its not super low budget or anything. Dark Souls 1 has far, far less people credited, likely cost less than half of what Lies of P did. Well, glad you enjoyed Smile

Yeah, and Dark Souls 1 showed for it. A bit less than half the game was pretty shit. There was a drastic drop in quality the farther you get in the game. Ground breaking for its time but it hasnt aged well imo

I finished Mortal Shell 2. It's quite a mixed bag.

On one hand, it looks great, the combat animations are visceral and satisfying. The art direction is mesmerizing and the UI looks spot on. The the weapons, even if just a few in numbers, vary the play style enough to experiment. The shells and tarstones provide options for creating builds and to reinforce various play styles. Even if many dungeons instill a sense of repetition, the sense of exploration is there and you will feel compelled
to explore.

But there's quite the junk attached to all these nice features:
Even weeks after release, there are plenty of annoying bugs. You get stuck in the environment, fall of edges in questionable ways, etc.

The camera is a freaking mess and the hitboxes are all over the place. Enemies completely disappear because the camera decides to have a look at the skies, that sort of stuff.

The difficulty is all over the place. This isn't the most challenging Souls-like (HP got nerfed via post-launch update), but the way the difficulty is crafted is quite annoying. It has a lot of gatcha moments, enemies that explode, enemies that hit you after death, enemies that await you behind a stalactatie to explode on you and throw you off a ledge, hordes of exploding zombies behind a box, etc. The game just wants to get you like that and it's not exactly fun or challenging, but quite annoying. The bosses aren't very difficult either, but you have to put up with the camera, the hitboxes and sometimes so insanely annoying and unfair design (e.g. Monolith).

The performance is alright. There are some spots where it's rough, but the game is gorgeous and it's running well most of the times.
