Most speeches, commercials, dissertations, music etc. were already low effort, plagiarized slop before LLMs, and it was progressively getting worse.
AI appeared just in time and fulfilled a massive demand. So now it's much more obvious.
The problem is that people will choose to remember the "before time" differently but it's all rose tinted glasses and fake memories. The Age of Slop started 10 years before ChatGPT arrived.

@Shocktrooper I was about to say the same.
For decades politicians had speech writers rehashing the art of how to say nothing, while sounding like something. They are just swapping out people writing meticulously worded slop. To AI writing it.

And it might be my perspective. I don't care what a politician says in premade self hype speeches, I care what they do. As they can say 1000 things. But in the end have to do something to earn their pay. They are not paid to convince me they are doing a good job. They are paid to do a job.

They can have a whole speech of: I do job good. I good at job. I go do job now.
Then go and actually do a good job. And I am happy and consider him a good politician Very Happy

damn, that's an impressive looking kart racing game (despite the visual artifacts), especially for running in the browser and no pre-generated assets.

homeworld inspired game, also no assets, just programmed.

https://x.com/mikeluan123/status/2081716631986983093

god damn. Me making a lot of various AI games, doing the assets are of course the most time consuming thing, when we are over that threshold it's over Mr. Green

I have a hard time thinking indie games will be a thing you can make money of in 3 years or so, at least it will be very difficult unless you have something that is close to AAA quality or super unique and great. It's getting visibly better every 1-3 months + i think its just in the last 1 to 1.5 year where attempts of REALLY improving coding started, so i don't think we are even close to "as a good as it can get".

Well said.

Remember when we collected great looking fonts, even pirating them? Haha. Today we are FLOODED.

I think we will remember indie games, maybe even games and entertainment overall like that in a few years, how we used to collect it and then all of a sudden its just something that exists everywhere and is free or you can make it yourself.

It will be wonderful, and it will be awful. Everything we think "well that just won't be possible", will be possible.

the kart game looks good but thats all it can do right . Looking good ... just prediction frames one after the other stolen from mariokart youtube videos ... no physicx, no actual code right ? snake oil like back in the 90ties ... fancy cover box art but the actual game itself was trash

and the dude has no idea how to fix the glitches or how to improve it cause he dont know how its working cause he would have fixed it if he could ....

threejs is mostly a renderer i believe. you can add Rapier to it and it can do physics.

what these ~one prompt games are, is just a very, very brief glance of what you can do with 1 prompt. if you spend a week or a month you can do proper, fun games. no one in their right mind would expect a game which is one-shotted as something truly great or something you could sell etc, that is not the point. its only there as a comparison of what we can do today vs 6 months ago etc.

you do not need to understand why a visual glitch is there to fix it, the ai can figure that out 10 out of 10 times i would say, sometimes i can take a while though. a screen is usually enough (like 9 out of 10 times from my experience).

but then if a game is now reduced to just a 2 sentence prompt ... why would i buy the game. id just buy the holodeck and steal and input the prompth myself

i think creative people are going to feel how music artists felt when napster came out and they are going to hate it and riot

This isn't only an new AI problem. I can think of games here and there over the years I played, made by people, that the creators seemed to have no idea how to fix some serious bugs in them Razz

@PickupArtist yes, that's i said, i dont think indie games will be a thing in 3 years, people will be able to do their dream indie game in maybe a few days.

i am a creative person and i love it. i do music, i make games. what it feels like is going from trying to do everything to being a person with a team and you can direct them and they will never complain.

i think the creative people who are rioting are the usual people who are very conservative and they just want to keep doing what they have always done and they dont want to change anything. i have always loved change for tech, i have always followed it and adapted, when generative AI came out (Disco Diffusion) i directly started using it and tried to come up with ideas of how to utilize it and most of all dream about the possibilities (which now are here and far beyond what i could ever dream of).

I think AI is going to be incredible for bug solving. I almost expect bugs to be a thing of the past in a few years. It can play games and look for it in games, faster and better than humans can do. I saw someone already using that and with quite good success.

If you just ask it to make a game it's probably not going to make something good.

And it's never going to solve it in one prompt.

Realistically, if you already know how to code, you can actually do some good stuff and use it as a multiplier. This applies to any subject really, the more you know, the better the result since you can better frame the request/or ask for individual, smaller aspects to be built, instead of make me a mario kart game.

Also, helps to use more than 1 model. All of them have different blindsides.

But overall, even for people that can't code, or have knowledge of a subject it still allows you to build your own stuff. Like, I was getting annoyed with lm studio's changes and other issues, and I just made my own webui, added a memory system to it, voice, added a bunch of things. That was done in a fairly short time with a bunch of free models.

i have done with SO much stuff. A few examples

1. Got annoyed at the image generator WebUI and also at Photoshop + wanted it to be more AI focused: made my own.

2. Wanted a great audio editor. None is to be had apart from Soundforge, and you have to pirate it since you cant seem to buy it. Made my own instead of relaying on fishy pirate copies which all seemed to have trojans, sucks to research if its false/true, no way to be sure.
Still working on it though but its great so far.

Same. some niche software I use for my TTRPG, or music/audio hobby either was a PITA, old windows 98/7 GUI that is flaky, or I used only a few select parts out of the entire subset of features they had.

So whipped up some basic softwares for: "It does what I need, that's all it does, and it does it how I want"

@PickupArtist
And it surely will get smarter down the road. But right now making anything is more than: I want an awesome Racing Game, go make it.

You don't need to know coding (its SURELY helps to know to debug), but you need to be meticulous in describing aspects you want, how you want them, all the features and how they should work etc.
I'd say you at least need a solid whiteboard of: The game mechanic details and inner workings, look, feel, interactions, gameplay loop/style etc. To feed it over time, before you even start.

Think of it as you hired someone off fiver to make you a game. Only difference is they know what to ask you when you don't flesh out all they need as that's what they 'do' and know what they need.
AI will guess/wander to what it thinks you want. Which makes it twice as hard to get back to what you wanted if its down the wrong road on something you didn't define you didn't think of needing to.

Like say you wanted to start today making a game with AI and never did much with AI. You would spend a week trial and error learning how to tell it what you want, before you get to a point you know what you have to tell it.

Not saying it's as hard as making the game itself, nowhere near.
Just there is still something you need to learn: Prompt engineering and how to work with AI learning what it will do on different levels of info provided, and how to keep it on the rails you want it on.

For free? I wish. No, no such thing. Also doing code with AI is a thing for every company now, the ones saying they're not using it are straight up lying because for some reason some people still think AI is controversial.
There could absolutely be individuals who does their own code, of course, but for companies, like e.g Pearl Abyss etc. No, i bet they have it half automated even, its why they get spit out update after update, because its rather effortless.

Water marking code would be rather difficult too, an AI could find it and remove it if it was done too. if you wanted you can also take open source code and rewrite it to such a degree that it would be your own.

A new game i am working on sometimes. this is a quirky boulder dash kind-of clone where you can alter gravity.

Since i didnt want to use generated AI-music from Suno etc i instead did what i have learned from working with modular synths, we created a synth engine and made it work like how you can set up modular synths to do endless generative works which are never the same (Krell patch).

I agree its 100% a horrible thing.
But don't get the nazi connection.

Nazi destroyed books trying to stop them from being readable as 'un-German' thought. Purpose was suppression of ideas.
Other than the single fact books are being destroyed. Nothing about is the same as Nazis.

Here the physical object is treated as useless. The text is treated as valuable.
That's the important difference. Nazi thought both was useless, and destroyed them to STOP spread of its information. Here content is preserved digitally, not erased. That's the whole point. (Even if the point is arguably dumb, it is their goal). It's the exact opposite goal nazi's had.

Both are horrible ideas of what to do with books, for TOTALLY different reasons.

Ai book destruction is rookie numbers. They need to pump it to up compete with the big Dogs of Book Destruction.

Looking into it:
Book Retailers (Bookstores like Books a Million, Barnes and Noble, etc) return unsold books to publishers and publishers pulp them.
Publishers (the actual biggest destroyer):
In the US alone, approximately 640,000 tons of books are sent to landfills annually (hundreds of millions of copies), often because publishers overprint to avoid stockouts and because returns are destroyed.

In France, around 140 million books are pulped yearly. In the Netherlands, even with return rates of just 5 to 6 percent, about 2 million unsold books are pulped every year.

There is a term for it: strip-and-return system. Ruin the book as proof of no sale, mass pulp them to recycle. Common practice is removing the covers as proof of the book not being sold as evidence in order to receive credit back for the unsold books, and these coverless books then end up in the landfill or go through pulping.
https://chireviewofbooks.com/2023/12/07/book-waste-the-dangers-of-publishing-and-the-ethical-consumption-of-books/

Toss in singular people into the mix, they throw out 10 of 1000s of tons of books a year globally just as average people.

Use "destroying books" and just slap "AI is doing it" and people start caring.
Those I listed above? Been doing that yearly, for decades. AI has nothing on them for book destruction.
So the irony? Who destroys the most books? The companies that make..books, by a LONG shot.
